Corinthian sweep past threadbare 'Broke

Neville Cup quarter-finals
Corinthian 4 (Lucas Piccioli 2, Davy Carson, Glenn Holmes) Pembroke 2 (Justin Sherriff 2)
Corinthian comfortably got past Pembroke to reach the Neville Cup semi-finals, building up a 4-1 lead by half-time, inspired once again by Lucas Piccioli's trickery.

Davy Carson scored against his former club inside two minutes, tapping in after a virtuoso run from Glenn Holmes who used his pace to burn past Peter Priestly and Ken Treacy on half-way and square for the Irish U-18 international.

Justin Sherriff nailed a corner to level but Piccioli's double swung the tie irreversibly. He stole off a hesitant Stu Garrett to bounce over David Harte for 2-1 and he put some distance between the sides when he turned Priestly in the circle from Alan Blennerhassett's simple ball in and found the bottom right corner.

He turned provider for Holmes' goal, the only player to react when a corner might have been awarded, flipping over Harte to leave the simplest of tasks for the striker; a just reward for a pitch length move. Sherriff pulled one back late on with a drag-flick but it was a tough stint for Pembroke with just two subs available.

Fingal 1 (Gary Sharman) Monkstown 2 (Alec Barrett ps, Stephen Cole) on golden goal
Stephen Cole's stunning golden goal put Monkstown into the semi-final of the Neville Cup, guaranteeing Rory O'Donoghue a semi-final date against his former club, Glenanne, in late November.

Alec Barrett scored a penalty stroke in the second half after Ben Chillingworth took one to the body on the line for 1-0. But Gary Sharman scored a rebounded corner goal - his first since joining from Kilkenny - to force extra-time.

Cole, though, spanked in a brilliant reverse-stick effort in the second period of extra-time to take the win.

YMCA 5 (Andy Walker 2, Mikey Fry, Cliff Bailey, Jacob Webber) Clontarf 0
Clontarf got a harsh lesson of what to expect in the season to come in division one as they conceded five and, were it not for goalkeeper Stephen Kearns' form, it could have been more.

Jacob Webber scored three days after returning from Australia while Cliff Bailey got his first goal for the club to add to strikes from more established YM players Mikey Fry and Andy Walker.

  5. I'm well aware that it was a seriously depleted Pembroke squad. Justin, Paddy, Ned & Harte put in decent performances but truth be told it could have been a much bigger defeat.

Corithians hit the crossbar, had a handful of great scoring opportunities and got a little bit sloppy in the 2nd half. Harte and the corner team kept some nice Doherty flicks out too.

Justin scored from a straight strike and a drag. Apart from picking the ball out of his net twice, Ross Murray didn't see that much of the ball.

It means nothing in terms of seeing where Corinthians are against the 'real' Pembroke side but they demolished what was put in front of them yesterday & that's all they could do.

  6. Ymca look very good yesterday versus a battling Clontarf-who are gonna take time adjusting to the standard of div 1. The Clontarf keeper definatly looks the part though , made about 10 fantastic saves yesterday

  21. Corinthian should not get too big for their boots after easily beating a div 2 side and by beating a Pembroke side missing at least six players by a 2-goal deficit. There will be far tougher opposition ahead for them. They seem to play nice hockey but never grind out the results when needed in my view.

  22. The Game analyst might be perceived as being cocky alright but hopefully ur not considering my post (9.33am) as cocky.

Corinthians won't be looking past semi-final match against YM & will give them their full respect. One game at a time.

  23. Sorry 10:50 pm...

Look at Corinthian's season last year....Mills cup run beating a full strength Glenanne and Pembroke side (only missing Gormley) on the way - also qualifying for the IHL...

I am sure Corinthian, along with YM and Monkstown will be teams to watch this year and they can only improve as the season goes on...

Also, it's Neville Cup!!!! I think most of the top teams reaslise it is a good training run out to get ready for the real season ahead...I mean, it's a cup granted, but my god, there is more to play for these days than the Neville cup....

    Stupid comment..

  24. did trinity 2nds really beat pembroke 2nds 4-2 ? If so great result for trinity and the rest of the league! Do trinity have a good team this year are were pembroke missing a load of players

  25. Trinity beat Monkstown 3-1 last season in santry. Town went on to win the league. There will always be upsets of this nature, but it's pembroke and i have a feeling their 2nds will be competing for the league by the end of the season.

  26. Not begrudging TCD, especially as they aren't even close to back to term yet, but judging by the amount of 2nds playing for the 1st's in the Neville Cup the same day I'd say the Pembroke team wasn't that strong. But like I said TCD aren't back yet so they may not have been that strong either. It's what great about Div 3. Every team has the beating of each other.

  27. Can it also be noted Trinity drew 3-3 last year with pembroke in santry. That game was against (in my opinion) a far stronger pembroke team. Also Trinity have been a lot more organised this preseason with regard to getting non-firsts people out to train. But it was still a surprise result for us.

  29. I'm predicting IHL FINAL 4 AS:

    Pembroke
    Glenanne
    Banbridge (after extra time)
    Annadale

glens v's pembroke final again if they dont meet in semi.

    (No Corithians)

    ReplyDelete
  30. banbridge have lost eugene and geoff. they'll do well to get semi's again, not impossible but they'll have to play well every game. They are in a very tough group. So tough in fact i'm not even going to attempt to call it. Pembroke and AN other. Glens and cookstown other group.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 2.59 pm I think most people would agree with Pembroke and Glenanne but what is interesting is how you decided on Banbridge and Annadale? I should think C of I might be in the reckoning as well.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 2.59

Sorry dont mean to be smart but what do you mean Banbridge (after extra time) There is no extra time in the IHL until the final 4. anyway i'd say C of I instead of them

    ReplyDelete
  33. would defo go for C of I if they can't start pinging in a few goals from play.

Bann (without their stars) and Cookstown need to mature. its interesting how Pembroke's season transformed in one afternoon last year in the IHL, they looked virtually out until they pummelled some team (was it Annadale?) by five to sneak through. Think they should have it handy this time out.

  34. The Game analyst

Whilst I would love you to be right and thank you for your support, I think you may be letting yourself and your reputation as one of hockeys top analyisers down in predicting us for final 4 this year :)

  35. Pembroke had the bare 11. Their team was very weak considering all their 2s players were palying the neville Cup Game. A few silly Mistakes cost pembroke the game. Mairtin Cronin goal was a beauty deflection right into the top corner!

  36. trinity also had a bare 11.

  37. It must have been an interesting match with 22 naked players on the pitch. Anyone any photos!!!!
