Garrett names women's Celtic Cup squad

Guy Garrett will take charge of an Ireland A selection for the women’s Celtic Cup in Scotland as the central panel will be competing in the Champion’s Challenge II event in Kazan, Russia.

To that end, he today announced a squad of 16 for the tournament which runs from June 26-28, saying: "We have been working hard and, with our final training camp this coming weekend, I feel that we are ready for the challenge that lies ahead. We have shown that we have become a much more cohesive unit over the past ten months."

Ireland A will take on France, Wales and then hosts Scotland who have won the Celtic Cup for the last two years.

In a much-changed line-up from the panel that played Germany’s U-21s in March, Emma Smyth, Lauren Barr, Megan Frazer, Michelle Harvey and Lizzie Colvin are all with the senior panel while Grace Watters and the injured Zara Delany are unavailable.

Kate McConnell returns after a stint in Australia while Slough-based Hannah Bowe is back in the fray, too. Aisling Campion, Miriam Crowley, Nicci Daly, Rachel Mulligan, Stephanie Quinn, Cliodhna Sargent and Emma Thornbury are the others included this time around.

Ireland A squad: Hannah Bowe (Slough), Aisling Campion (Loreto), Miriam Crowley (UCC), Nicci Daly (Glenanne), Nicola Evans (Hermes), Vicki Green (GK, Clifton), Kate McConnell (Pegasus), Liz McInerney (UCD), Rachel Mulligan (Armagh), Anna O'Flanagan (Hermes), Audrey O'Flynn (UCC), Stephanie Quinn (Armagh), Cliodhna Sargent (Cork Harlequins), Katherine Steenson (Armagh), Helen Stevenson (GK, Railway Union), Emma Thornbury (Armagh)

Match Schedule:
Friday, June 26 (12pm):
Ireland A v France
Saturday, June 27 (10am): Ireland A v Wales
Sunday, June 28: Ireland A v Scotland (2pm)

How are there so many players involved in the Irish setup from clubs like Armagh who did nothing this year? If they are really the best players in the country, then they should be showing it at club level first. There are some very surprising omissions from the Ireland A squad.

who are the surprising omissions then?i think its a pretty good squad

What a truly ridiculous comment to make. One or two or a few stars does not a totally top class team make.

Definitely think Molly Malone deserved a place, sure isn't she from Dublin !

How is Jean McDonnell not considered to be one of the best 35 players in the country?

for your information every team has their bad spells and guess armagh had one this year as they had many great players injured. so take your nasty comments some where else!

who else do you think should be on the team?

this A team seems a fairly rolling panel. with the amount of players now in the senior panel plus there's a few like Chloe watkins and Niamh Atcheler who'll be with the U-18s and prob a few students taking a break that it's a fairly tough one to select.

Isn't Jean McDonnell a manager of one of those U-18 teams who are playing that weekend? could indicate an extra reason for her non-involvement though it is odd the club player of the year would not be with such a panel

Jean McDonnell is part of the A training panel and did not get selected in the 16 for the Celtic Cup.

surely the idea behind the A squad is for those deemed to be potential senior internationals of the future , and to give them a chance at a higher performance level . Thus you will always get a changing team as coaches try and see as many developing players as they can . Armagh have had a very strong young squad for the past few years with the school providing most of them ...all started by Mick McKinnon ..great to see Ash Campion getting a chance , she is a very calm ,unflustered defender who just may have what it takes to get up to the next level if she gets a chance ...No one really knows how these young players wil cope on the international stage until they get the chances so the A set up is a vital component for their development

Great to see players from non IHL Clubs making the squad. These players will improve their clubs no end. Well done girls!

As stated before elsewhere on the site, the comments on this site will not become a rumour mill. Everyday there are different suggestions as to who is moving where.

There is a varying degree of truth in most of these stories but until clubs confirm to me a player is moving and is registered appropriately, comments of this sort will not be posted.
