UCD retained the annual Colours title 5-3 at Grange Road yesterday, as they took the laurels in both the men’s and women’s first eleven matches to keep the title in Belfield for another year.
Goals from Rachel Burke, Rachel O’Reilly and Kerry McComish saw an under-strength UCD – missing Lisa Jacob and Megan Tenant-Humphreys – race into a 3-0 lead in the women’s game. All the goals came in quick succession between the 15th and 24th minute before Katie Grehan pulled one back for the Trin.
And while Trinity held more possession in the second half, they did not manage to penetrate the UCD circle regularly and the Belfielders held on for a comfortable win.
It assured the colours title as the scores could only be tied at that point. The junior results comprising men’s seconds to fourths and women’s seconds to fifths – a men’s fourths fixture was won by UCD 3-2 but not included in the final tally – had left the tie locked at three points apiece going into the blue riband events. But the women’s result made it an unassailable lead for UCD due to their win in 2009.
Nonetheless, a fiercely competitive saw UCD’s men’s first claim the final point on offer courtesy of Ben Grogan’s drag-flick on the stroke of half-time following Richard Jones' run.
Again, Trinity held a lot of possession but created little end product as UCD coped without player-coach John McInroy and captain Tim Hill while Karl Smith has just moved to Brisbane on an exchange programme.
The second half was much like the first with Craig Moore a strong physical pressence and captain Daire Coady showing his experience in defence for TCD. David Quinn reverse flying over the bar was the only real chance for either side.
The mens seconds drew 1-1, Shane O'Donnell scoring a corner for UCD. Trinity won mens thirds 4-2 with club captain Stephen Tennant Humphreys and Scott Baxter on the score sheet for college.
