ISC Men's Round up

Leinster has nine of the last 16 in the Irish Senior Cup - including two division 2 sides - after yesterday's 3rd round matches. As a result, seven of the eight 4th round matches will take place in and around the Dublin area.

There were shocks galore, with Ulster table-toppers Banbridge beaten by bottom of the table and pointless Kilkeel 3-1 while Trinity overcame higher division opposition when they beat Kilkenny. PSBPP overcame Catholic Institute on a day where no Leinster side lost when facing opposition from another province. Cookstown were the biggest winners, they fired 17 past hapless Cliftonville.

The draw pits last season's finalists Glenanne against Annadale while Fingal continue their history with Lisnagarvey who will visit ALSAA.

Results – Men’s Irish Senior Cup (Round Three): Bangor 0 Cork Harlequins 1; Belfast Harlequins 2 (Hamill, Anderson) Bray 3 (Cox 2, Hinge); Antrim 2 (McIlroy, Criton) Bandon 3 (Smith, Kingston, Sweetnam); Kilkeel 3 (Annett, Cunningham, Niblock) Banbridge 1 (Magowan); Cookstown 17 Cliftonville 2; PSBPP 3 (de Nortichoke 2, Borne) Catholic Institute 1; Lisnagarvey 3 (Cockram 2, Black) Cork C of I 1 (Smith); Suttonians 0 Pembroke Wanderers 9 (Giles 2, Fulton, Conlon, Sheriff, Sothern, Wilson, Gormley, C Harte); Mossley 0 Annadale 5 (Mills 2, N Hamilton, McKeown, Persil); Belvedere 0 Fingal 5 (Sweeney, Gahan, D Bane, McGuinness, Neville) ; Ballynahinch 0 Instonians 8 (Barnes 5, Watson, Irwin, og); Three Rock Rovers 5 (P Maguire 2, Darling, Ringwood, Blakeney) UCD 0; Glenanne 2 (Butler 2) Corinthian 1 (Warren); YMCA 2 (A Walker, Whelan) NICS 1 (Posnet) ; Dublin University 4 (Orr, Coady, Gorman, Moore) Kilkenny 3 (Pearson, Sharman, Gray); Monkstown 3 (Allen, Lewis, Lee Railway Union 1 (Lynch)

bit of a harsh comment about Doran...If i were glenanne i would look beyond the goalkeeper and take a look at changing their defence, players like Fitzpatrick and clinton really need to question whether or not they are good enough for div one anymore, they will struggle this year with an ageing defence and once their Irish players stop playing..Simon

being honest the comment on doran is well harsh....have u seen any off the games hes played in, its harsh blaming him alone....u obviously clive dont hava clue.....ur probably some little bitter little pwhc boy who dosent like players doing well...either that or your a muppet.

Clive,

Steve Doran is a quality keeper. His performance for pembroke in the Club Champs 2 years ago was outstanding, Europe that year, final of IJC year after, and many others top level games have proven his quality. Having played with him for years I'd say that the problems the Glens are having are not simply down to him.

Singling any players out for uninformed derisory comments is out of order. Glenanne as a team are shipping goals and as a team will need to correct it. They probably will when the business end of the season comes around.

Clive,

That comment about Doran being just a 2nd string keeper is propper harsh, as already pointed out, His performance in the club champs two years ago broke many Glenanne hearts including mine, and some of the saves he's making at training haven't been seen since Young Clarkie was in his Prime and around the Irish Senior Camp. As for changes at the back, there are options (Davey Shaw being one) and who knows what decisions are going to be made....

It is hard to look beyond Pembroke as winners of the ISC this season. They are flying at the moment, have a huge squad and the draw has been very kind. After that you would have Glenanne as second favourites with 3 to 4 other clubs with an outside chance. Does anyone else see things any differently? In fact I would go so far as to say Pembroke will win an ISC-CC double.

GO SMITHFIELD!!!!!!

Fair points i shouldnt have picked Doran out specifically - but i have seen a few games now were he has not been that solid. I also feel that the defence dont have much faith in him and its causing problems with communication.

As for bolger coming back well it may help - if he is fit he is a very strong player to have and is a good leader when things get hard. But again hes must be 40.

The one thing i will say about the goalkeeping position within glenanne is that - if Doran got injured - well then they will have serious problems as they have no backup - and thats were Clarke will have to be persuaded to come out of retirement.

With regard to the comment by "dave" that im pwhc member or a muppet well im neither actually. I have an interest in leinster hockey and attend games whenever i can - and my comments are observations of games i have seen.

Yes indeed Go Smithfield.....in all seriousness i agree with the comment above thiugh about Pembroke and Glenanne. The draw has been kind for Pembroke and not so for Glens but in my opinion, the two best sides around, with Wanderers edging it at the moment on current form.

Go YM

I have a funny feeling YM wil be dumped out ofthe competition in the next round!

Anyone tipping beyond Pembroke/Glenanne & YM! for ISC glory?

Cant see anyone but Pembroke winning it, Rovers may threaten if get get a favourble draw but id imagine Pembrokes class will be too much and they wont let happen what happened last year.

well it looks likely that it will be Monkstown/Kilkeel, Three Rock, Quins, Pembroke, Glenanne/Annadale, Garvey, Cookstown and Instonians in next round....after that it is all about home draws, particularly for ulster sides. I'd go for Monkstown and Glens simply for home draws in next rounds close games.

All the same Glens proved last year that home draws can count for very little with away wins in Cookstown and Quins.

Kilkeel?? How are they doing this year? Does anyone know much about them?

Anonymous said...

If Brick's predictions ring true then that's Monkstown, Three Rock, Quins, Pembroke, Glenanne, Garvey, Cookstown and Instonians in the last 8... 4x Leinster; 3x Ulster; 1x Munster... With the InterPro U16 & U18 victories, it's great to see a resurgence in Leinster hockey... especially with an All-Ireland League around the corner.
allez les bleu!!!

they're last.....no points from 6 games!!!

oh and dorans a hero!!! what a display last nite!!!

yeh kilkeel are last in ulster but defeated Banbridge in last round and reached semis two years ago before going out to eventual winners harlequins by only a 2-0 margin. thats why i wouldn't rule them out

My predictions are as follows;

Monkstown, Three Rock, Quins, Pembroke, Glenanne, Garvey, Cookstown and Instonians

It looks as if the quarter-finals will be packed with quality matches.

Fingal -v- Garvey will be a lot closer than people think. Fingal will not give any team an easy game in Alsaa and Garvey will not enjoy playing on our surface.

We played them in pre season up North minus a few senior players and they scraped a 2-1 win. Expect an upset..

to be fair i thought that Fingal should be considered against Garvey....i just think that Garvey have a good chance in this comp if things go their way in the draw.

I hope fingal win though
