Best All Time Irish Players

A thread has recently started about Ireland's greatest ever players. It comes at an interesting time as I recently was told about a guy who is writing a book about Ireland's greatest sportsmen.

He has been asking well respected people in the hockey fraternity to try and come up with the top 30 of all time are. With that in mind, I thought it would be good to centralise all your opinions in one thread. Anyway, whack your best 11 into a comment and we'll see what we come up with.
I'll put together a list in a week or so, or when the comments start drying up, with the results.

Ralph Walker,David Judge,Bill Haughton,Jimmy Kirkwood..........too young to see them play (except Kirkwood), so only based on what ive heard.

Yeah from what i have heard Kirkwood and Judge were amazing but im also too young to have seen them play. The best Irish player ive ever seen is justin sherrif when he was at his peak he seemed to just score goals for the laugh.

rovers frontline of bill and ken haughton was supposedly very frightening to play against. and that bill had the hardest hit of anyone in the country.

well i cant think up a whole team. But Jonny Goulding, continously scoring over 20 goals a season from open play!!! he will throw himself at anything. and is very strong on the ball!! And never an Ireland call-up!!

defo goulding was a great shout for at least a call up....also clarkie from the glens deserved a call up in his prime. But how colin kelly(wiggy) from pwhc never got one!!!!

Anonymous said...

johnny cole - has to be in contention as best player all time.

Anonymous said...

i agree warrick armstrong has to be up there among the greats!

Anonymous said...

Johnny Cole best ever, the man captained Europe, not alot of people in Europe let alone Ireland can add that to there hockey CV!!

Anonymous said...

warrick armstrong? who is he?

Anonymous said...

The name says it all. Armstrong was born with a deformity which meant his left arm was twice the width of his right, allowing for a shot that outpowered all before him. And all since.

What about players like Philip Shire, Eddie Cummins & Alan O'Driscoll?

let keep it on warrick armstrong! wata player u cant deny hes been one of the most prolific goalscorers the leinster league has ever seen!!! (bar gordan watkins) hes been such an influencial figure iver the last few years, its a loss to irish hockey he never played internationally! and yes the myth is true about his arms
