Men's weekend round-up

Glenanne 1 (Joe Brennan) Monkstown 5 (Ian Allen 2, Filip Jaros, Gareth Watkins, Simon Groves)

All of Monkstown's potential came to bear this afternoon as they put in a five-star performance against Glenanne. Filip Jaros and Gareth Watkins built up a 2-0 half-time lead before Ian Allen and Simon Groves made put four between the sides as everything clicked into gear for Town.
Joe Brennan pulled one back before Allen got the fifth - all of which in typical Monkstown style came from play. They were also bolstered by the return of skipper David Fitzgerald from injury whose broken toe held up well enough to take his place between the sticks on a day where they perfectly executed their tactical game-plan.

The win sees Glenanne almost completely out of the title chase while Monkstown can look forward to another strong second half of the season, similar to their late run last year which saw them nab an All-Ireland spot.

Corinthian 2 (Miles Warren, Dan Williams) YMCA 1 (David Robinson)

In the battle of the young guns, Corinthian keep pace with Fingal and Monkstown in the race for the fourth All-Ireland league place bt while their main rivals picked up emphatic wins, they were made to work hard by YM. David Robinson continued his goal-scoring form but it wasn't enough to get any points.

Bray 0-10 Fingal
TRR 6-0 Kilkenny
UCD 1-8 Pembroke
Fingal, TRR and Pembroke all picked up comprehensive, facile wins this weekend as they overcame three sides in the lower reaches of the league.

i dnt think it was a case of monkstown being amazing, it was more a case of glenanne shooting themselves in the foot. altho monkstown did take their chances well.

nightmare for corinthians!

saw the glens game, monkstown were by far the better team!the glens seemed to be second to everything,in fact three of their goals were rebounds off doran and they got their stroke after a rebound also. They simply deserved it and the glens looked completly shell shocked!!!well done town.

Well done to monkstown - great to see another side competing in the senior league, can only be positive for leinster hockey to have a bit of competition at the top

Monkstown were very good, and delivered the performance their talented team is capable of, strong defence and quick breaks.
Great to see them win so comprehensively.

The town play corinthians on Tuesday night. It should be a good game - Goals Guaranteed!

Will they good enough to beat TRR in the ISC?

glenanne were very poor yesterday, they have been that way for a few games now - the legs are gone in the older guys. And nothing coming thru.

They need to get their act together for the europeans or they will be humilated.

Defence is the main concern.

Yeah i have to agree. Although Town took there chances Glens played very poorly. Their defending was not up to the standard it usually is and Doran appeared to be well off his usual form. Well done to Town and heads up Glens. YOu have to lose sometime and maybe this will give you the push you need to improve!

lets remember that Glenanne won four trophies last year, among them an Irish Senior Cup. so called 'old guys' don't go from being Irish cup winners to unable to compete in the Leinster league in the space of 8 months. They are having a poor season but teams don't become outdated in a year....it is a gradual process which will takes it toll on Glens. This season had nothing to do with 'old legs'. If they could go to Cookstwon and Harlequins and win last February how come a year later they are completely gone. The whole team is having a bad season but there are still things to play for...expect them to bounce back.

glens are past it

Is it true fitzie was playing with a broken big toe? Anyone want to say which foot it is?

There are some crucial games tomorrrow night.

Rovers-Fingal and Corin-Monkstown.

Can we expect any upsets? ie a Corinthians or Fingal win..

i heard it was his finger?

either way i was watching the glens game and with the exception of one blemish he was mistake free in goals and was solid as always.

papers said it was his finger but were wrong. it was actually his toe.

pembroke YM tmw night too

I expect Pembroke to hammer YM and continue their fine form, Monkstown and Fingal to beat Corinthians and Three Rock respectively. Corinthians will find it difficult to contain Monkstown's quick counter attacking hockey with Watkins, Allen and Lee to the fore. The 3rock fingal game will be a contrast of styles, three rock don't like it up'em and that's exactly what Fingal will do tomorrow night. Both games will be close encounters, the race for the top 3 is definitely hotting up!

whoever wrote that last comment must not know how rovers are doing this season. played 17, won 16. 2nd best defence record in the league, won neville cup,and in 1/4 finals of mills and isc. why does every rovers game vs. town/fingal/corinthians or whoever comes on this site saying rovers will lose.also with all this talk about young lads at ymca, have a look at rovers.

Fingal to beat Rovers comprehensively....

Anonymous said...

fingal to beat rovers in my opinion too

Anonymous said...

not so sure bout fingal beating rovers, rovers are much improved this season and can deal better with the physical side of the game, monkstown to beat Corinthians

Fingal cant play to par on rovers bouncy water bace....certainly a 3rock win, corinths and town gonna be closer, a draw is my et, is it right that if chc win their 2 games in hand they in fact move to 4th spot?? It seems strange because i thought they have had a few slips.

Fingal will struggle on a "live" surface, as they did in UCD on a similar pitch.

the last full season the glens didnt have shaw, butler and goulding they ended up sixth. doesnt really surprise me they didnt do too well against a good side.

maybe it was a blip but they will be the side most affected by irish players absence

Anonymous said...

Corinthians have had a few slips...both their games in hand are against 2 of the top three...cant really see them gettin any points from those games

Anonymous said...

McConnell - 23
Blakeny - Australia
Goodman - Aberdeen/quit hockey

The Corinthians havent had their chance to beat the big teams yet as they havent played either three rock or pembroke home or away. When they played them they drew 2-2, they drew and lost to fingal.

Anonymous said...

corinthians have a chance to prove them selvs tonight weather there worthy of top 5 or not

Fingal to lose by a good margin id say, something along the lines of their last match versus rovers (6-1). Would like to see monkstown keep their momentum going but based on the past consistency is what they are lacking.
