It’s already on record on the site that there’s going to be some dissent to this decision but I think it has to go to Mitch Darling, based on the matches I have seen this season. A couple of others came close, especially from Pembroke. Justin Sherriff was untouchable in some games this season, scoring some absolute screamers. Alan Sothern banged in a rake load of goals while, for me, Tim Lewis was the club’s best player, developing into one of Ireland’s best players this season.
Elsewhere, David Robinson looked perfectly at home in a Leinster jersey until he picked up his shoulder injury. Filip Jaros was instrumental in setting Monkstown’s flyers free while Brendan Parsons and Alan Browne kept Glenanne’s season motoring.
Three Rock, too, had a number of heroes with Maarten Sier’s goals making up for his time spent in the sin-bin, Andy McConnell adding bite in midfield and Charlie Henderson proving his worth.
But Darling seemed to be central at all the key moments of the season, starring for Leinster, banging in five semi-final goals and ending the season with five strikes in seven internationals.

A previous comment about mitch only scoring at the end of season is very short sighted and clearly made by a small minded person.
It is at the tail end of the season when it really counts and you need goalscorers to perform.
I have been very impressed with him this season as a whole and yes he found his form in the second half of the season. But thats when cups are won.
No point being on fire in sept/oct and worn out by Jan/Feb.
Fair Dues! Cant complain 5 goals in the semis and his performances after christmas guarantee him this position!
In agreement with both of these comments however I fell that consistency is the key to a top player and that is something darling is yet to acquire, he is still young though and I have no doubt that it will come. For me, Lewis was the outstanding player of the season, he proved his worth in all four positions in defence consistently and showed great maturity in doing so.
It bodes well for the future of irish hockey that some of the names that you have mentioned in contention for this, lewis, sothern, robinson, the goalkeepers winner harte and players winner mitch darling, are all still in the U21 category.
Tim Lewis deserves this award defo!!!!!
Have to agree that consistency is vital in todays game. Like the others I would have had Lewis win this category. At only 21 he has shown how influential he is in all aspects of the game...attack and defence. Outstanding for Ireland in Setanta Trophy and Celtic Cup. Darling has only come to the forefront in recent months. Lewis was outstanding all season. Amazing how all potential nominees are so young...I hope burnout won't result!!
Can't agree with the above comments,Mitch saw three rock to four trophies this season and two european tournaments while then going on to put in huge performances for Ireland over the summer. His early season form is only coming into question because of the number of goals he scored in the second half of the season. His performances were equally as good all season however the earlier part was characterised by some bad luck in front of goal. Something any sportsperson can experience and will be aware of.
tim is easily the best player this seson. he is class. Fair play tim u deserved this award
Have to agree I would have given this award to Lewis. He is a very solid player in defence but has proven himself to be vital in attack also. He has been outstanding for both Pembroke and Ireland all season!
Never, Mitch Darling was by far the player of the season.
jaros had a great season for monkstown!
