Glenanne and Avoca complete indoor line-up

Glenanne and Avoca completed the line-up for the inaugural National Indoor Trophy finals weekend last Sunday at DCU as they took the top two places in Men’s Group IV to oust debutants Belfast Harlequins.

The Glens won both their matches to qualify, leaving Avoca and Quins to duke it out for second spot with the Blackrock club eventually prevailing 5-3.

It means they take their place in the final line-up with Glenanne joining Railway Union, Pembroke and Clontarf - who will be without Olympian Laurence Docherty due to a severe knee injury - in Group I while Avoca face what looks the tougher pool with 2009 finalists TRR and YMCA and 2008 finalists Monkstown contesting.

On the women’s side, Hermes, Loreto and Railway Union renew their outdoor rivalry with Railway facing Hermes for the third time in a week. Holders Galway, meanwhile, play Old Alex and UCD.

In total, 27 fixtures will be played over an intensive weekend at the National Basketball Arena with the women’s final getting underway at 7.30pm on Sunday night and the men’s final played at 8.30pm.

Commenting on the draw, Indoor chairman Paul O’Brien said “It draw throws up some exciting matches for both the men and women’s competition. On the ladies side, the three leading Leinster teams (Railway Union , Hermes and Loreto) find themselves drawn in the same pool fighting it out for the two semi final places. Galway, who host the European Club Championship Challenge in February, are drawn in the other group with Old Alexandra and UCD.

“In the men’s competition, holders Three Rock Rovers led by Liam Canning, who travel to Europe next month, are drawn alongside beaten finalists from last year, YMCA as well as Monkstown.”

Sunday results:
Glenanne 7 Avoca 4; Glenanne 4 Belfast Harlequins 3; Avoca 5 Belfast Harlequins 3
Standings: 1. Glenanne 6pts (+4) 2. Avoca 3pts (-1) 3. Belfast Harlequins 0pts (-3)
