Glenanne move into top three

Men's Division One:
Glenanne 7 (Stephen Butler 2, Gary Shaw 2, Graham Shaw, Eddie O'Malley, Shane O'Donoghue) Clontarf 1 (Andrew Poynter)
Glenanne overcame an early deficit to notch up seven goals against Clontarf for the second time this season as they struck six times in the second half and now move into the top three. Andrew Poynter had given the bulls the lead from an early corner but the Glens moved level by half-time and, with Gary Shaw a driving influence as he hits a decent run of form, the Tallaght-club used their territorial and possessional dominance to push home a comfortable win in the final reckoning.

YMCA 1 (David Robinson) Corinthian 1 (David Carson)
YM's belief at home saw them again pick off a point from top opposition but coach Trevor Dagg was left frustrated his side could not build on an early lead and were stung by another phenomenal David Carson effort. The Milltown hosts took the lead while Glen Holmes sat out a yellow-card suspension for a deliberate back-stick tacke with David Robinson (pictured, left) applying a neat finish after the ball had been worked in from the right. The Y subsequently had three corners, two of which were not stopped, go a begging along with a couple of wrong options taken in the circle to hold just a single goal lead at half-time.

The reds responded well after the change of ends and got back on terms when Carson latched onto a steal off a YM defender at the top right of the circle. Iain Walker came haring off his line only for Carson to apply a delightful chipped, slap-shot which lobbed the keeper and had the right amount of back-spin to drift into the goal. Corinthian had the momentum but Andrew Sutton's yellow card slowed their charge. They won their first corner on the final whistle but Walker dealt with the Chris Pelow drag and follow-up to maintain a point.

For both sides, the single point ups the ante for upcoming fixtures with Corinthian now needing another win over Pembroke to stay in first place while YM must win against Three Rock - postponed from next weekend due to European indoor considerations - when they meet to take pole-position in the race for fourth.

Men's Irish Junior Cup:

A more than decent weekend for Leinster clubs in the Junior Cup as Railway and Fingal's second teams ousted Ulster opposition. Teenager Jeffrey Spillane bagged a double for the Park Avenue outfit en route to their 5-2 win over Mossley while Fingal won at Shaw's Bridge, bouncing Instonians out of the competition by the odd goal in five.

Former UCD-man Pete Thompson's penalty stroke gave YM the golden goal to eliminate back-to-back finalists Pembroke, 1-0. Monkstown and Glenanne play their second round ties next weekend.

Round Two results: YMCA II 1 (Pete Thompson) Pembroke II 0, golden goal; Railway Union II 5 (Jeffrey Spillane 2, Karl Chapple, K White, H Griffin) Mossley II 2 (R O'Neill 2); Belfast Harlequins II 0 Lisnagarvey II 9; Newry II 1 Cork C of I II 6; Bandon II 1 Bangor II 4; Instonians II 2 Fingal II 3
Quarter-final draw: Bangor II vs YMCA II; Lisnagarvey II vs Railway Union II; Monkstown II/Kilkeel II vs Fingal II; Cork C of I II vs Cookstown II/Glenanne II

Men's Irish Hockey Challenge:
Famous names abounded on the score-sheet in the second round of the Irish Hockey Challenge as St Brendan's and head of the Gaelic Players Association Dessie Farrell was on target in their 2-1 win over Kilkenny. Former international, and Irish Senior Cup winner with Avoca, Robbie Ryan picked up a hat-trick for his native Limerick as they won 4-0 in Omagh and will now play Portrush in the quarter-finals.

Former Suttonians and Clontarf man Mukthar Ahmed also pouched a hat-trick as Portrane had too much in the tank for St James Gate. They travel to reigning champions Campbellians in the last eight while Brendan's also travel north; they face Ballynahinch.

Second round results: Omagh 0 Limerick 4 (Robbie Ryan 3, Nathan Eacrett); St Brendan's/PP 2 (Dessie Farrell, Donal Byrne) Kilkenny 1 (Ben Wallace); Saintfield 2 (Gareth Lennon, Gavin Kirkpatrick) Ballymena 0; Portrush 3 (Andrew Dalzell 3) PSNI 1; Naas 3 Ballynahinch 4; Parkview 0 Larne 1 (K McGoldrick); St James Gate 0 Portrane 3 (Mukthar Ahmed 3); Campbellians w/o Ashton scr
Quarter-final draw: Campbellians vs Portrane; Ballynahinch vs St Brendan's; Limerick vs Portrush; Larne vs Saintfield

I'm amazed that Corinthian failed to beat YM.

YM have only lost once at home this season, 2-1 to Pembroke, so I'm not that amazed.

Is Muhktar Ahmed not cup tied after having plaeyd for Clonarf?

If not, Portrane will miss him against Campbellians....shame he cant travel up North for the game.

Giles playing pembroke 2's, how does that happen?

Simple answer to this one - because Alan is legitimately registered to play for the 2's in the IJC. The same way that the glens were able to play Gary Shaw, David Shaw, Goulding, Lambe, David Keogh and Eddie O'Malley to beat the dale in round one. No rules broken so lets not start on this one.

By way of clarification, Portrane are currently seeking a visitor's visa to allow Mukthar play up north.

Also, as for the cup tied issue, Portrane are currently clarifying the situation with the IHA.

From my personal experience, I don't know if there is an issue. I moved mid-season and subsequently played Irish Junior for a new club. I had only played a handful of league matches for the original club and not in a national level competition (ISC, IJC, IHT, IHC) and there was not an issue once registrations were confirmed.

No arguement, just wondering why an international is playing 2's.

When you have 12/13 current and former internationals, 1 of them is bound to be registered for IJC... Should be a good one up in Cookstown this weekend

it would be interesting to see who the 11 ISC registered players are as I know Craig(Ned) Fulton can also play IJC.

Jaysus lads. Get over it. Pembroke have about 18 players in their squad who are at least senior interpro standard, 9-10 of them are internationals!

Of course some of them are going to be registered for IJC

why cant Muhktar Ahmed play up north?
