Suttonians back on top of Div Two pile

Men's Division Two:
Navan 3 (Simon Clarke, Ruairi Clarke) Suttonians 4 (Conor Gillett 2, Simon Walsh 2)
For a third time this season, Suttonians were made to work extremely hard for their points against the Navan badgers, this time Conor Gillett’s stunning, top-corner reverse the highlight of a lively fixture.

Simon Clarke’s deflected corner strike gave Navan the lead at King’s Hospital for an early lead. Gillett, though, levelled matters in disputed circumstances with the Navan defenders believing the forward handled the ball before finishing off a goal-mouth scramble to make it 1-1 at the break.

Sutton started the second half brighter, Simon Walsh banging in two goals in quick succession to make it 3-1 before Simon Clarke pulled one back. Gillett, though, kept the league leaders in front with a superb reverse from the top of the D. Ruari Clarke pegged one back when he got his stick to a wayward shot to set up a grandstand finish with five minutes left. But Sutton held out to take all three points to move them back out to a clear lead in division two.

Elsewhere, Dublin University's tie with Bray was called off due to a frozen pitch with a quarter of the pitch at the Marlay end under ice.

when do the top teams meet eachother next?

they have to play each othere twice , i home match for each team.says on the leinster website that they will meet on 20/3/10. makes an interesting finish to the league
any predictions to who will go up?

I predict that no team will go up as Leagues need to be restructured to sort out the mess that is Div 2! No team in div 2 currently could live in div 1 as Clontarf are proving at the moment, they were head and shoulders above all the other div 2 teams last year and now are struggling in div 1!

1 team will go up and 1 will reach the playoff. There is no way the branch could change the way the promotions work at this late stage.

True the league needs to be restructured. But they could only do this for next season.

There are only really 2 possible solutions.

1. Some kind of merge with Div 3 resulting in some 1sts and 2nds teams in the same league. The ladies section works this way with 2nds teams unable to be promoted.

2. Completely restructure Div 1 and 2. There is an argument now for reducing the amount of teams in the top league. With the IHL and European commitments there are just too many games for the top 2/3 Leinster sides. Coupled with International match breaks etc it could be simpler to have 2 leagues of 8 sides.

Whatever happens they need to make a decision now. A meeting was supposed to happen at the end of Jan but not sure if this went ahead

Agreed.... no team from div 2 is ready for promotion

Two leagues of 8 seems the most sensible way of moving things forward in both divisions

How about 2 teams promoted from Div 2 next season (no relegation from Div 1) and then forming Div 1A with 6 teams and Div 1B with 6 teams, each team playing each other 3 times to give 15 games a season? This works well in the rugby AIL after changing the system a couple of seasons ago. Bottom team in 1A relegated to 1B to swap with top team in 1B. Top team in Div 2 in a straight playoff with bottom team in 1B for right to play in Div 1B. This would also encourage some other clubs to come back into Div 2 and make it a 'healthier' league ie Naas, Portrane, Skerries, Mullingar etc. Just a thought...

it would benefit the game as a whole. the current clubs of div 2 would need to up their game to compete which i believe they would

Says on the Leinster website that UCD beat Dublin University in Div 3 on Sat. Is that right? UCD 1st and 2nds playing at opposite sides of the city at the same time so no double ups where Trinity's 1st XI game was cancelled so would have had alot of regular 1st teamers playing...

They drew with them a few days previously though at colours with both teams presumably at full strength.

Think that's more down to UCD3s not having a game and being able to play for the 2s. Seems to be a lot of doubling up going on with college teams at the moment. How can trinity 2s beat pembroke and glenanne and yet get humbled by UCD?

sutts for the league defo

Weston going up due to one player would be a farce. At least other clubs are trying to bring young players through and hold our sticks with our left hand above our right!

Navan player

To be fair 5:35 there's a major difference between having 3rds layers playing for the 2nds as opposed to having 1st team players!!

Dont be rediculous. Weston are brining through a good few players. Quite a few from KH and other school players. This, as far as I am aware iw why they play their games slightly later as KH have school on Saturday.

The above comment is unbelievable coming from Navan. Weston have their own pitch and have put it huge effort in the local community to get players involved.

One player does not make a team. Browner has done great work out there, proof of the pudding is beating Suttonians 5-0
