Weston reignite Division Two title race

Men's Division Two:Suttonians 0 Weston 5 (Darrell Carey 2, Adam Hanna, Carl Taylor, Simon Pearson)
Weston pulled off the most eye-catching result of the season to date as they obliterated Suttonians' 100pc record with a five-star performance at Sutton Park. Simon Pearson broke the deadlock inside the first quarter  when he tapped in from Darrell Carey's fine square pass and the provider turned finisher for the second goal of the half for a 2-0 lead. The Lucan side stuck rigidly to their game plan as Suttonians lost their discipline with Marc Guerin, Conor Gillett and Reuben Holden all seeing yellow and Weston used this to their advantage to notch up another three goals in the second half through Adam Hanna, Carey (pictured) and a superb Carl Taylor finish, smashing into the bottom corner. The win re-opens the title race with Weston now level with Suttonians in first place, though with a game extra played.

Dublin University 4 (Craig Moore, Andrew Gray, Henry Butler, Hal Sutherland) Navan 1 (Simon Clarke)
Two second half goals saw Trinity pull clear of Navan at Grange Road to hold firm in fourth place in division two following their 4-1 win over Navan. Old Etonian Henry Butler had opened the scoring but the Badgers pegged them back on the counter-attack finished off by Simon Clarke. However, Hal Sutherland - assisted by Craig Moore - restored the lead before the break and Andrew Gray and Moore handed the three points to the students to give them a fillip ahead of the annual Colours match on Tuesday. The competition this year will be played at Grange Road.

Avoca 1 (Martin Naughton) Bray 3 (Paul McAndrew, Simon Cox, Phil Davis)
Bray finally got off the mark for the season at the eight attempt as they bounced back from a half-time deficit at Newpark to score three times and put a big dent in Avoca's promotion chances. Martin Naughton had given the hosts the lead and they created a series of chances to no avail before the break. And Bray took full advantage via the prolific Simon Cox, Paul McAndrew and a Phil Davis corner.

This league is unbelievable. 2 results that few would have predicted. knew weston had the beating of sutts but 5-0 is a fair hammering. Bray beating Avoca is a major surprise. Watch this space, league is going to throw up so more shockers!

Your right there. Most open league in a long time.

great result for bray!

Well done Weston - the most pleasing aspect of this result was the fact that all the goalscorers are young, local talent that have come up through the ranks. Carey, Taylor and Hanna are all living in the area while Pearson is still a student at The King's Hospital. They have all benefited from the professional approach Alan Browne has brought to the club and the future looks good for the Lucanites.

The smile on my face after Weston beating Sutts was pretty big but just finding out that Bray beat Avoca.......priceless!

a lot of fans of Weston it seems...

Still an awful long way to go in this league. It's fair to say that everyone in the league is capable of beating each other so I'm sure there's going to be many twists and turns before the league end. Saw Weston on Saturday and they played very controlled hockey but were helped enormously by poor indiscipline on the Sutts team.

Sutts need to sort themselves out.

Indiscipline cost them promotion 2 years ago & it will again if they dont take a chill.

Were there branch umpires at the Weston Sutts game?

Anonymous said...

there was 1 branch umpire, and another young guy who I didn't recognise. He had a branch shirt on, but I don't think he is actually a branch umpire.

the umpires were branch at the weston sutts game.

The difference between the sides was discipline. When sutts went down by 2 their heads went down. Then it was like a frenzi of bad tackles team-mate abuse and silly frees.
5-0 is not the score line that was deserved however, the difference between the sides was not 5 goals.

Sutttonians were poor in the final 3rd, not capitalising on clear cut opportunities, steming from a poor defensive pairing which saw the young defender Harry Spain having to throw practically every ball up the pitch for safety because he wasnt being offered an outlet by his back line.
This left Weston with the ball on attack most of the game. With Brian Scully at the back and JB in the central role they had a solid central line to build on, although Scully didnt have a stand out game, with a couple of poor tackles, he was nonetheless pivotal.

poor league really the top 8 teams in divison 3 would beat any if the teams in divison 2

not this again... look this debate has been done before at least twice and is really dull.

Div3 man says we're great, div2 man says why not give it a go rather than sitting comfortably in div3... div3 responds with 'well i aspire to play top level' with my club...

repeat the circle ad nauseum, everyone else yawns... leave it alone!

to clarify in the sutt vs west, it was 1 appointed umpire, and the second umpire was pulled onto an Irish trophy game. A sub was agreed between the 2 teams to fill in.

shortage of branch umpires?

Anonymous said...

Top of the table clash in div 2 does not appear to have enough importance for 2 official umpires. No matter what way you look at this the whole thing is a shambles. The branch need to get the finger out and sort out Div2 /Div3 by start of next season. Failure to do anything will result in more lost players and clubs to the game.

ha but in fairness the umpires in the sutts game were top notch!!!

In all this talk about Weston no-one mentioned Brays excellent win away to Avoca! It really does show that any side in Div 2 can beat anyone else. I saw Avoca dismantle Weston 4-0 in Lucan earlier in the season and they looked a very good Div 2 outfit - Brownlow in particular was on fire. This was Brays first league win of the season - no logic at all to the form in this league and it certainly makes for an exciting season! In relation to availability of umpires - in the Branches defence, this was an Irish Junior cup weekend with no Div 2 fixtures pencilled in. However with the withdrawal of Skerries it was agreed to run another round of games and some of them were played last weekend - I believe the Sutts/Weston match was the only one in Div 2 last weekend with an official umpire (singular)? Thats terrible, but unless young talent (and not soo young) put themselves forward for umpiring courses this will always be a problem.

Brays win over Avoca was a bit of a shock but credit to them, they took their chances, Avoca didnt.

Avoca should have sealed the game in the first half. Could have been 5 or 6up at half time.

Bray came at the home team in the 2nd half, scored early and took another 2 chances very well.

I was the second "young" (thanks for that!) umpire on Sat. I did branch a couple of years ago, but gave up to go back playing. There was a cancellation during the week, and Sutton asked me to do the game, and Weston agreed. If we are to get into the "neutral" ref question, that is a problem thoughout all leagues currently, and I think having left sutton 5 years ago leaves me neutral enough.

I believe there was a "the wheels have come off at the griffeen" comment there a while ago after the navan match.....bahahahaha funny!!! There's wheels coming off all over the the place so!

Irrespective of how little interest the branch has for div 2, it's great to see players from all clubs engaging in firm exchanges on differnet views.

Simon Fallon has helped us (Navan) out afew times over the past few seasons when we were left short branch umpires, He is an excellent young umpire, he always kept great control over the players on both teams and was nothing but fair in all his decisions! We need more like him!
