Were there even trials for this?
Brendan Parsons/Alan Browne/Richy Shaw/Gary Shaw?Il let the wider public judge the selection for themselves!

Alan Browne is in his thirties I don't see the point in selecting him

Anonymous said...

every one of the glens players in that squad is justified in my eyes, was justin sherriff not available, also ali haughton?

Anonymous said...

Flannery, Fran Lee, Haughton, P Mconnell, Giles,

Anonymous said...

Glenanne and friends! Best of luck boys!

Anonymous said...

Alan Browne was selected as he is one of the best players in Leinster! Stop with the jealousy.

Anonymous said...

im not saying he should definitely be in the squad but it makes no difference if Browne is in his thirties....he's a good experienced midfielder that plays for one of the top 3 teams, also a lot of other midfielders in leinster who are considered better are ineligible to play. In my opinion the squad should be picked to win the interpros, not just to give young players with potential a bit of experience....sure some can count themselves unlucky not to make it(suprised giles didnt make it) but this is with a good side with proven players who have all preformed at the top level. Good Luck to them

As someone who plays for Glenanne hockey club, I will admit that two of the players selected are a bit strange. Richard Shaw & Parsons are not top 16 player material. And because of these selections Keogh has opened himself up to criticism before the tournament even begins.

But the other three are worth their place:

Alan Browne is a very experienced player; Hes one every major honur in the game. He is also A Good leader on the pitch, this will be required due to the number of younger guys in the squad.

Gary Shaw is good quality kid, with great potential

Joe Brenann is one of the best players in the country.

On what basis was the squad picked?

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised to see 5 Glenanne players on the Leinster 16. I presume that these 5 players played in the match against Monkstown? Doesn't seem very promising for the interpros. I definitely agree with the comments above regarding better players being excluded.

Anonymous said...

Did you ever think maybe that these "better players" you are refering too mightn't have gone for trials or even wanted to be part of the inter pros? Alot of more experienced Leinster players probably wanted the weekend off!!

Anonymous said...

we're gettin a bit harsh here aren't we!!! there's a first 4 everything lads......especially in terms of monkstown beating glens, do monkstown want a medal??? well done to monkstown tho....well better on the day..but thats it!! glens played terrible and it doesnt mean that they automatically turn into bad players!!! the 5 glens players deserve their spot!!!

The Elliott inclusion is strange to me. He's retired from international hockey so not much development potential. Browne has not ruled himself out of internationals from what i can make out (though maybe unlikely at this point). Parsons has been in good form, Richie Shaw is a definite one for the future.

Fitzy down at monkstown could also have come clsoe if he hadn't been injured

Anonymous said...

what about Ian Allen? been banging them in for the Toon recently

From talking to the lads in the Squad, the motives behind the selection is to win the interpro's not to give aload of young lads experience, thats what the U21's is for. Alan Browne has been picked as an experienced player who has played for Leinster many times before as is the same for Elliot, the other young players (McConnel, Southern, Shaw Bros, Watkins, Darling, etc) are all excellent players who deserve a place on the squad and aren't being brought in just for the experience, they all have matches at at least Irish Development level, and Parsons has been in the top 17 players in Leinster for years now and is well worth his place. I see a Strong team....

Anonymous said...

My understanding is that there were no trials - its not that people weren't keen to turn up!
It looks like a return to the old days - surely the interpros should be all about trying to give young leinster players the best opportunity of getting involved in the irish setup? No doubt Alan Browne is a fantastic hockey player but i guarantee you, if he was 10 years younger Passmore still wouldn't pick him for the team - he is only interested in getting a hold of players at a young age

Anonymous said...

Something that I think is often overlooked in hockey is the fact that the best 11 individuals don't always make the best team. Brown and Parsons are team players and I think would do a lot of the graft some of the other more 'flash' players wouldn't do - hence a good mix of skill and graft.

I'm tired of hearing all thos crap about the future (E.g YMCA) tournaments are all about the present and if you keep planning and dreaming of the future then you'll never win anything. I think there's a good mix of experience and youth.

Having said all that it's a travisty that trigger (Sherrif) doesn't play as it's a joy to see the guy play.

Im surprised Lamber, Kev and Alan Goulding didnt get on

I hardly feel you have a leg to stand on here, it doesnt matter if elliot has retired from international hockey, he is still one of the best finishers in leinster and deserves to be on the squad,

secondly, i dont know how you think fitzy was gonna come close when it wasnt even a competition for henderson and walker as they are the best keepers in leinster outright..

Anonymous said...

does anyone else think that putting young shaw ahead of haughton is a correct decision? i cant see how that isnt a glennane for glennane choice there. also why isnt giles in there? both giles and haughton started both games last year, when all internationals were available

Anonymous said...

Mathematical Problem!!
Leinster League, Monkstown 5 -Glennane 1.
Leinster Squad, Glennane 6 - Monkstown 1.
Does this equate ?
Maybe Noel Keogh has the solution.

Anonymous said...

well if u actually look at it properly ther are 5 glens players in the leinster squad. glens also beat mnkstwn 5-1 this season why didnt u mention that?

Anonymous said...

glens beat monkstown when they had butler and shaw, when they did'nt have they were taken apart even with there five leinster players

Anonymous said...

advice to Glenanne lads feeling hard done by by the criticism: Glenanne have always been polarised from the Leinster hockey for a long time. They came in and upset the apple cart over the last 10 years and now that the team is collapsing to a degree people are lapping it up. Something similar is happening with Fingal at the moment as regards the comments made on their pitch. Just leave people with their words in their mouth. As a club we have been a phenomenen....coming from nothing to something. Some people just don't like that

Anonymous said...

fair point, monkstown did lose to glenanne 5-1 this season, however, does it not show that the glenanne players are not on the form they were and probably should not have so many players included.

I do think though with Glenanne going to europe soon it is good for leinster hockey to have a lot of their players included, it will do them good to play at that high level before they go away and hopefully get them back on track.

Anonymous said...

i think its good to see a coach pick players for the leinster team based on the games they have played in the league, because from my understanding, that is how this team was picked. Its nice to see not all coaches pick people based on "developing for the future" and just pick the best players. fair play noel think its a great team and hope the team does well.

Anonymous said...

Hold on a second....the Glens are still 3rd in the table. The season is long. Doubt monkstown will finish higher than them. One result does not make or break a season.

haughton didn't deserve to get into the squad this year, yes he played both games and started last year but you dont pick a team on how players played the year before...by his high standards he didn't have a great U21 interpros and as a result i would feel he has been left out of the senior squad....this let down should spur him on to become an even greater player and train even harder so that next time a squad selection comes around he isnt left out...

Giles on the other hand is away snowboarding at the same time as the tournament therefore wasnt considered for selection...

The Glens won 4 major trophies last year, it is only natural that they are going through a transition. I watched the Irish Senior Cup final last year and thought ALL 5 players from Glens were instrumental to the win with Parsons scoring a crucial goal.

Anonymous said...

As a Pembroke player i can understand why the Glens have 5 in the squad. Its simple, these players know how to win things. I know Monkstown beat them 5-1 but Monkstown have won nothing in the last 20 years. one win does not make you a winner. The Glens have won back to back leagues without Shaw and Butler and quite often play better without them.

Richie Shaw had a great U21 tournament, Parsons scored in every big game last year, Alan Browne is the hardest working player in the country, Joe Brennan is unlucky not to be in the Irish team and Gary Shaw is playing really well.

Anonymous said...

Brendan Parsons was 17th (1st reserve in the Leinster squad last year with all of the international players. Its not rocket science that without them he might be included in the squad.

Anonymous said...

I notice JK said he played for Glenanne Hockey CLUB not the 1st team! A little jealous that we don't have an Irish Senior Cup Winners Medal are we? Well well well?

Anonymous said...

Noel Keogh obviously picked the players that he trusts and knows will do a job for him. They did after all win him 4 trophies last year. last year Ned was the coach and a load of Pembroke players got picked, the year before Turloch was coach and a load of Rovers players got picked its the way it goes. Its good to see new faces in the squad. Year after year players gte picked on their name. The Glens were unbelivable last year and the players who led the team got picked.

If you don't see the point in including Alan Browne in the squad then you've obviously never won anything. The bloke is a winner FULL STOP.

disappointing to see no one from kilkenny on the team..
its blasphemy..

Its great to see young Dave Robinson there. He's perhaps the most deserving of his place in that squad with his performances for YM this season.

Here, here he is a great little player and is carrying a otherwise poor YM team. Would really like to see him playing in a really good side week in week out!!!

Anonymous said...

Not even going to react to that comment. He's playing in a team with great potential and a team that will only improve. After all, it's with YM that he has become the player he is.

Anonymous said...

YMCA- "a team that will only improve", they would want to start improving cause they arent doing all that great at the moment. Im sick a this potential and up and coming talk there are a load a players that are good underage but when it comes to the crunch they cant hack it at the top end of the league, I predict this will happen to a lot of The YM team

Stephen Findlater said...

I see the old YM debate about potential vs current success creeping back into this thread. Its been argued at length elsewhere. Can we keep this thread to just discussions of the Leinster squad?

Anonymous said...

There is nothing wrong with what Noel has done. he has selected players that are proven winners. He is obviously out to win the tournament and knows that he can rely on the people that he has chosen.

Also he has been at a lot of games this year, so he obviously knows who is playing well.

Anonymous said...

G Shaw, A Browne & j Brennan deserved to be in the squad as they are quality players. Browne was captain of glenanne when keogh was in charge, hence keogh has alot of faith in him.

Parsons is not brilliant but he works hard - and would be a good squad player not a starter.

Richard Shaw - well its a poor selection, in my opinion, He does have potential but he is far from ready.

Keogh in my opinion has just been lazy in his selection choices - im surprised he hasnt called Bolger out of retirement,

Anonymous said...

i agree, Noel and the lads won the irish senior cup last year ltes give him a bit of credit, he obviously knows what he's doing. Rovers have 4 in the squad and only have a Neville Cup win to their name in recent years.

Anonymous said...

As a member of Pembroke, Parsons scored against us both home and away in the league last season and has two already this season against us and we have 12 internationals in our squad not bad for a midfielder! so i say good luck to him.

Anonymous said...

Do Monkstown players want some kind of award for beating glenanne, once in a blue moon.

Get over yourself - Just because they beat glenanne they think that they should have aload of players on the leinster team.

When was the last time Monkstown won any of the major competitions in the country - When your team starts winning things then your players will be considered for leinster teams.

Its very simple all 16 players selected are worth their place, the Glenanne players are all proven winners. Yes two of the players are borderline - but they have been selected by the coach on merit.

Its time to start supporting and drop the negativity the surronds hockey.

All coaches in every sport pick players they know and trust. And that usually means the players from the clubs they have been associated with.

Also the Glenanne bashing is very boring these days.

Bolger has been playin well on the 4ths

Gary Shaw barely featured at all last season for The Glens, thought his inclusion was strange. Richard Shaw was immense last year.

Anonymous said...

Speaking from someone with inside knowledge, after Irish Senior Cup and Club Championship performances last year Richard and Gary Shaw were brought into the Irish development squad, Passmore also considered Parsons but maybe at 26 thought he was too old.

Anonymous said...

I thought the inclusion of 4 Rovers players was very strange. What have they done? Who cares about the Neville Cup? Will they win anything else? Doubtful.

Anonymous said...

What have they done? Look at the league table, the lsc and isc cup draws and the trophy in the cabinet that will tell you what they have done!!!!

Anonymous said...

I dont care what anyone on this site says. Parsons and the 2 Shaws;absolutely outrageous decisions.I also agree that when there was a Pembroke/Three rock coach, more of their players were picked. Its an absolute joke that absurd politics like this continue to dominate and undermine irish hockey, and unfortunately, especially Leinster hockey.

Anonymous said...

But Gary Shaw was in the squad last year and Parsons was reserve with all the internationals, so without the internationals and the success these players had last year does this not warrwnt a call up. They proved themselves against all the top teams last year. The only other players in Leinster to do this were Pembroke players.

Anonymous said...

i actually think Richard Shaw deserves his place on the side more than his brother. That guy has become an exceptional talent over the last year and a half. Might be a bit controversial to say it but i think he's as good as Brennan actually. Gary Shaw on the other hand was a border line call but having been there before i reckon that might have swung it.

God you Men are so abusive and critical towards each other. Why can't you just respect the Coach's choice of players? You should be supporting the team not slagging them off and dashing their confidence.. wise up and get behind them and maybe with some encouragement and support Leinster can win the title. You wouldn't even see Women acting like this and that coming from a woman!!!

Anonymous said...

woman should be acting like this! Its important that squad selection gets talked about and scrutinised because their is too much politics in leinster hockey even though this has gotten better over the last few years. I believe their is even more politics in womans hockey than mens in this province but they all seem to have the attitude of the woman above me which is to not question the selection and just support cause thats the lady like thing to do and this just results in deserving players getting shafted because they don't play for the right club or further down the right school

Anonymous said...

i dont see the point of making all these comments against the team..does nobody any good..i wonder if these are jealous players or supporters who "think" they know all about the game..if it wasnt anonymous would people still make these comments..as a player in the squad, training has looked quite good ,why dont we just wait until after the tournament..

Anonymous said...

This is a forum for debate and discussion. everyone will have their own opinion on who should and shouldnt be on the squad and that is the fun in the debate. Main thing is to get behind the team when they step out onto the pitch wearing the blue.

...looking fwd to seeing the Leinster Ladies equiv selection.
