Saturday round-up

Kilkenny 0 Pembroke 3 (Patrick Good 2, John McInroy)
Pre-match this match looked cut and dried; with twenty minutes remaining Pembroke looked decidedly shaky as Kilkenny put in a strong performance with just a goal between the sides. The eleven that travelled did run out comprehensive three goal winners in the end to avoid a potential banana-skin and keep their one hundred percent record in tact.

Fingal 3 (David Bane, Glen Shekleton, Trevor Parsons) Corinthian 0
Fingal made a significant step to gaining an All-Ireland league spot with a comprehensive win over Corinthian. The Whitechurch side's corners didn't click on the day while Fingal will feel they could have won by more, having let a number of chances slip through their grasp.

YMCA 2 (David Robinson 2) TRR 4 (Gary Ringwood 2, Mitch Darling, Tim Hill)
Rovers went into cruise control after taking a 4-0 lead early on. Robinson scored two brilliant corners, one on the stroke of half-time, to bring YM vaguely back into the game and also forced Neil Lyons to take one off the line. Rovers second half performance wasn't great but was enough.
Glenanne 5 (Alan Golding 2, Brendan Parsons, Joe Brennan ps, Mark Lambe) UCD 0
The Glens produced a strong performance, holding posession for long periods. Leading 1-0 at the break, the students got tired chasing the ball, allowing Glenanne to exploit the gaps on Eddie O'Malley's return to Leinster action.

Monkstown 5 (Alec Barrett, Ian Allen 2, Gavin O'Halloran, Simon Groves) Bray 0
A four goal burst in the first period ended the game as a contest despite Monkstown being slightly understrength - Alan Lewis, Eoin O'Connor and Zack Dutton missing. They cruised in the second half without being unduly pressured.

pembroke were in fact three nil up against us when we had the goal disallowed, the umpires were right and it shouldnt have been a goal but it would have been a reward for a strong performance against the leagues best team

So much for Corinthians nicking it at ALSAA........

Anonymous said...

accurate description of TRR v YM... definitely a game of two halves, both goalies played well and in the end more accomplished firepower up front prevailed for Rovers.

Anonymous said...

I was at the Fingal game and Corinthians were not in this one at all. They lacked creativity and looked more like a team that was fighting to stay in the division rather than a team competing for an All Ireland spot.

As for Fingal, they should of won by 6 or 7. I think they will easily edge out Monkstown and Corinthians in the battle for fourth place.

Anonymous said...

Corinthians were never in the game against Fingal who won easily in the end. However with both Monkstown and Corinthians having games in hand the race for 4th spot is not over yet!

Anonymous said...

The corinthians player really struggled to play on the Alsaa pitch as predicted. They were unable to play there normal game and werent able to even put away 1 of there 11 short corners. Its now down to the Corinthians Monkstown game although there are a few games in hand issues floating about.

Anonymous said...

am i right in saying that Corinthian's games in hand are against pembroke and the glens

Anonymous said...

corinthian's games in hand are against pembroke and rovers

Anonymous said...

yeh theyve got both teams when they dont have there internationals!

Anonymous said...

and monkstown's is against UCD.

Anonymous said...

both rovers and pembroke are still the best teams in the league with or without their internationals, pembroke showed this in their game against fingal when they beat them 3-1 in a convincing manner....a team like corinthians wont trouble either of the leagues top two

ym rovers must have been close

Anonymous said...

Alright peeps, I'm hearing a rumour that both Rovers 2s and Clontarf 2s have been turfed from the IJC for fielding illegal players! Any truth in this? I'm asking y'all cos obviously if it ain't on these comment boards then it ain't true!!

Anonymous said...

YM -Rovers was extremely close in the end. YM completely dominated the 2nd half. Unfortunately they had lost the game b4 they were even in it with some silly mistakes at the back which were punished well by rovers' frontline. They didnt have Will Powderly, Mikey Fry or Stephen Barry. So their team was purely made up of youngsters, with Andrew Walker and Keith Benson the oldest players by a stretch at 24 and 26. YM definitely ones to watch.

Anonymous said...

I thought it was Clontarf and Corinthians Seconds who were disqualified due to playing unregistered players?????

Anonymous said...

YM-Rovers... Will Powderly was playing. Rovers being 4-0 up in first 25 mins is a hammering (and contrary to other comments, all from open play). Game over. That the game was "extremely close" is stretching it a far bit as YM never in it apart from two well taken goals from David Robinson from short corners.

Anonymous said...

i was playing in the game and will powderly wasnt playing........... also a ym corner was taken off the line which would have made it 4-3 with 10 min to go!

To be honest I think people are getting carried away with this "YM youngster" lark. I heard from some rovers players that the game was over when they went four up. Rovers went into cruise control and in fairness to YM they stuck at it and put in a better second half performance. This happens alot when teams go four or five goals ahead. It is not something to be proud of. They lost 4-2, well done rovers,

Not a TRR member.

Sorry mate,

Will Powderly was not playing.

Mikey Fry was not playing.

And Stephen Barry was not playing.

Yes, Rovers went 4 up, and then the tide completely turned. With Neil Lyons saving a certain goal off the line that would have made it 4-3 with 15 mins to go and YM on the ascendancy.

Dont know where u got 'Will Powderly was playing ' from. He was on the other side of the world. I expect YM to turn over 'the chaps' in a couple of seasons.

Anonymous said...

is the u21 cup going ahead this year? this will show how good the ym youngsters are. i would bet pembrooke or rovers will win maybe corintians what do people think.

Anonymous said...

Rovers were missing Pheile and Peter who is also on the other side of the world. It's important to have strength in depth. As good as the missing players for YM are they are not playing for Ireland or Western Australia.

Nearly doesn't get you three points. If and thats a big if YM's youngsters can stay together as they start to go to college and keep their motivation high, yea they will be a better side than than they are now but with 7 points all year they would want to be.

"I expect YM to turn over 'the chaps' in a couple of seasons."

Expect all you want but talent alone will not get you anywhere. Rovers have strength in depth, good young players and will probably be peaking in a couple of years. The likes of M'Connell (and the other talented players in that age bracket) will still be only 25 (below the age of 27 when male athletes hit their physical peak.)

If YM are celebrating the fact that they came close, what might happen on this sight if they manage another 3 points!!

Anonymous said...

Its hardly celebrating buddy. YM dont seem to get any credit for the hard work that has been done at the club to nurture homegrown talent. YM, a few years ago, could easily have ended up like an Avoca, instead they have now built the solid foundations needed to move onwards and upwards. And that they will.

I think Glenanne could be a suprise for the u-21 cup this year, the team has been the same for the last two years, only losing gary shaw! just been very unlucky the last few years. but might just struggle if they come up against a strong pembroke team like last year! Pembroke to win it, glenanne to be the dark horse.

Anonymous said...

not arguing the fact that YM have got talented young players because they do,very talented...what i will say though is that clubs around the top of the league have even better young players at the same age that have been performing at this level for 4 or 5 years at this stage and higher in the likes of the ISC and club champs...YM will want to start performing now or next season or theyl find these young players following neil lyons steps and leaving to join a club in the top three in order to further their international aspirations...

Anonymous said...

This YM rovers debate is stupid. Against weak teams like YM you only have to play for 20mins to win the game. As for there youngsters, they impressed and it was the more experienced players who moaned all game and let them down. Honestly the goal keeper Walker (who had a super) will have to leave along with Dave Robinson if they have aspirations of getting 50 or more caps for Ireland. It is a sad fact but its true.

Anonymous said...

Every club in the first division deserves credit in this case. Well done YM you are still in division 1. Good work. A couple of talented youngsters and you want credit. That is pathetic. Every club has young, talented players. Look at UCD, Monkstown, Rovers, Glens, Pembroke, Corinthians. They have more talented young players than YM in my oppinion and they don't go looking for credit. If its credit you want; have it. If it silverware you want; grow up.

Anonymous said...

No more talk of YM on this site unless you have something constructive to say. Why would any players need to leave a club that now has a solid bunch of talented young players? Its not as if Neil Lyons has gotten any better as a player since he's left YM, and i dont think leaving idiotic comments on this website will get you anywhere.

Anonymous said...

the leaving cert should be changed so that we dont have to hear "watch the flower bloom" or any other disney rubbish from people talking about ym..
they have talented youngsters . .big swinging mickey..everyone bar bray have talented youngsters..
if we wanted to talk about youngsters we can talk about schools if you wish..

Anonymous said...

glenanne wont be a dark horse, who do they have? pembroke and 3 rock are defo favourites with sothern and harte for pembroke and mitch darling and tim hill for 3 rock etc..

Anonymous said...

its not about who they have, its about how well a team gel's together!! Im not for one second saying that glennane are going to murder every team, but richie shaw is a proven defender and jonathan kane has just as good skill as others in his age braket, and more then some people older then him! there a well gelled team, im just sayin be prepared, potential banana skin!

Anonymous said...

lets be constructive(in jest)
PREDICTIONS IN BRACKETS
in order of appearance;

1,PEMBROKE: best side by a shadow of a doubt... pity they dont hold any irish passports (1)

2, GLENANNE: Wud do well at Eurostar... style but lacking substance (3)

3, 3ROCK: perenial pretenders to the crown... need to work on "staying power" (2)

4, FINGAL: aerfunct... government handouts wont bring success (5)

5, MONKSTOWN: once in a blue moon... consistancy here a problem (4)

6, CORINTHIANS: 3Rock "B" team... that should rattle a few feathers
(6)

7, Kilkenny: In limbo... in need of an Ambromavich (9)

8, YM: "All good things come to those who wait"... said the tumbleweed (7)

9, UCD: TCD out, UCD in... looking forward to playoffs (9)

10, BRAY: No manager, no players no club... cant wait for div 2 (10)

Anonymous said...

Shaw and Kane might be good players but two players doesn't make a team. Who else have they got?

Anonymous said...

well sorry, you just named two players from pembroke and TRR i thought i would stick with the trend. they will have shane o'd playing, a young kid with bags of talent. But loads others playin for their seconds, like every other u-21 team out there. Could you name every player of the corinthians team last year before the cup started? unless your in corinthians, which would mean you could!! Everyone goes on about how every team has young kids in abundance ready to step up, but unless they have major talent like the likes of sothern and darling and robinson(i know there's more but cant rememember them) there just being thrown in the deep end. why where Glenanne so good last year? Cause they had been playing together for years, knew eachother inside out. IF! now thats a big If, if YMCA manage to stay together as a team, in 5 years, and the right coaching, they could be sucessful! But i just think in the next 2 0r 3 years some mite jump ship to the all-ireland league!

Anonymous said...

speaking of youth.....was newparks treble winning side of '97 the best ever schools side or do peopel think there was/or is a better schools side out there? That newpark side still have alot of its members playing div 1 hockey!

Anonymous said...

The wesley side who won the irish schools for first time, and then went on to lose final (on strokes) in Europeans... Great side, with most of team playing Leinster division 1.

Anonymous said...

That Wesley side that lost the Europeans on strokes but won the All-Irelands, Leinster Senior cup and Leinster League have to be the best schools side ever!

Anonymous said...

kilkenny could do with an abramovich..
anyone interested??

Anonymous said...

Kings hospital have produced many good school team over the years, with many players going onto play leinster and ireland - the pembroke teams were full of their players

Newpark also produced some good teams over the years, the team with Anton Scott & Dagg were fairly useful in the late 80s -

St Marks produced some very good teams from what im led to believe very limited resources player wise - it being a GAA school. They have produced many Leinster and Ireland players. Though now their st marks players seem to have dried up - are they still playing the game in that school ?

Wesley team winning the all ireland was probably the best team in the past few years

Jk

SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YM YM YM great youth??? TOO MUCH MY HEAD IS WRECKED!! Please comment on something else. The whole DO PEMBROKE HAVE TOO MANY FOREIGNERS debate was even more exciting. Whos going to win this weekends match between Fingal and Monkstown? I think its Monkstown at home. The winner get to go to KILKENNY!! What a prize!!

Anonymous said...

St.Marks are still managing to churn out the odd player despite hockey being the 6th sport in the school....Jonathan Kane( Irish under 18) is in 6th year there and he started playing when he was in first year. There hasn't really been a hockey team there for the last two years but this year they have got things going again.

Anonymous said...

On a side note. Blakeney is in the Western Australian squad. Still got a lot of work to do before he makes the final 18 to play in the Australian Hockey League at the end of next month. WA is a tough team to break into. Perennial finalists over the last 5-10 years.

Anonymous said...

Monkstown haven't beaten Fingal in their last 3 games, and they all weren't at that wretched place called Alsaa!

Anonymous said...

Go Blakers! people on this site smash the foreigners in the Leinster league, so hypocritical! we should be grateful that ours is an international sport and we have the opportunities to travel, and enjoy playing in other countries while improving ourselves (like Blakeney). How many Irish people have played in Holland and Germany or anywhere? Heaps! So how can you bag foreigners playing here. It’s good for the game, the league and individuals, keeps things interesting and its mad fun if you ever get the chance to do it! Lots of GAA players would love too!
