Pembroke on brink of title retention

Men's Division One
Glenanne 1 (Johnny Goulding) Pembroke 4 (Paddy Conlon, Alan Giles, Alan Sothern, Maurice Elliott)
Pembroke moved to the verge of retaining the Leinster men's division one crown as they survived a barrage of second half penalty corners to knock Glenanne out of the title race. Most of the damage was done in the first half through smart counter-attack play. Paddy Conlon got on the end of Craig Fulton's burst from the right flank to open the scoring before Alan Giles finished off from around the flick spot after Conor Harte had burst forward from the back.

Johnny Goulding snapped up a corner rebound but Alan Sothern scored right on the hooter, tapping in at the back post following Conlon's assist. Maurice Elliott made it 4-1 from a corner move to build a comfortable lead and, though Glenanne had over 10 corners in the game, they could not break down the Pembroke defences.

As it stands, a win for Pembroke on home turf against Three Rock will assure the title though if Corinthian drop points against Glenanne next Saturday, they could have the crown wrapped up a day early.

Clontarf 1 (Dan Treacy) Monkstown 5 (Brian Groves 2, Andy Ewington, Gareth Watkins, Ian Allen)
Monkstown produced an excellent first half show to leave themselves in with a strong shout of ending the season in the fourth IHL spot, with only Three Rock producing a pair of wins able to deny them. Andy Ewington got them off to a great start, scoring the first corner of the game in the eighth minute.

Gareth Watkins cut in from the right to reverse home a couple of minutes later. Brian Groves scored a corner rebound and Ian Allen touched in from close range after a Watkins' reverse.

The already relegated Bulls improved after the break but still shipped a fifth on the break, Groves popping past the goalkeeper. Dan Treacy scored their sole response from the penalty spot.

And to think that someone recently posted that a semi final of the IHL between Pembroke and Glenanne would be a better game than the final.....

3 games in 4 days. What are Leinster branch thinking of. Stupid. Glenanne had no chance. Pembroke supporter.

I see from D.V.'s photo's of the Glens vs Pembroke game that Butler played.

With the club not dishing out an immediate suspension following his red card on Sat, will he play again in the league this season???

That is a good question from 9.39. By my reckoning if they all finish on 29 points Monkstown will be 4th as won most games (9) but TRR and YMCA will have identical 8 wins 5 draws and 4 losses. So what does it go on then? Is it goal difference or the matches between the two sides?

Eddie O'Malley got the Glens goal

To Craig… I think you are blowing this out of all proportion

There was one player very well established player going around like a thug on saturday.

For the most part it was a tough hard game with very few dirty tackles bar as I say the one player. Can't name him obviously or this comment might not be put up but you wouldn't be too far off with a good guess!

He was throwing himself to the ground constantly in effort to get people sent off. He goading and intimidation after one goal was particularly embarrassing to himself and his team. There would have been nobody sent off if he only behaved himself.

Being a "hard" player does not involve namecalling, following through with your stick or hitting people off the ball with your stick. That is cowardly.

Also supporters don't help matters..I thought the abuse and the intimidation from outside the railing was very worrying.

Fox in the Box scored the goal? I thought he could only score goals against lower teams or for the
2nds...

Well done!

9.40. Agree totally!!!!

so if Glens beat Corinthians and Pembroke have the league wrapped up before Sunday I really hope out of respect for the rest of the league they still give it 100% against Rovers as YM and Monkstown would be very let down if they don't as it would affect the fight for 4th and 5th. As it stands if Rovers beat UCD and Pembroke they get 4th if Monkstown don't beat Glens and YM beat Railway? But if Rovers beat UCD and lose to Pembroke, and Monkstown lose to Glens and YM beat Railway, YM and Monkstown get 5th and 4th respectively???? Monkstown are guaranteed 5th at least? Clear....?????!!!!!!

Best and closest season ever, its great!!!

The Fox is a flat track bully...Pembroke, C of I and Cookstown know this...

Do you really think Pembroke would take anyone lightly even if they had the league won. With the EHL coming up I imagine that they will be more than happy to show everyone what they are capable of producing. So I wouldn't worry...

YM assuming they only have to turn up against Railway on Sunday to pick up the 3 points and asking that Pembroke play a full strength team against Rovers. No doubt that railway will have a say on how the last day goes. Squeezy bum time for all concerned in Park avenue

or maybe EHL may mean a slightly weakened team.

Timmy lewis not playing yesterday, guess he was injured, would you risk playing him if you had a game like that coming up.

alos, anyone know anything about Three rock 2s against corinthians yesterday?

to 9.40am.. There was no abuse or intimidation coming from the Glenanne supporters on Saturday. I say Glenanne, because your comment is very obviously biased in that direction.

Maybe you should give a more informed/un-biased account when commenting in future. It is only to the detriment of hockey that false accounts are made on public forums.

Ok lads, a line is being drawn under this debate with quite a number of allegations being fired back and forth about who said and did what in the Glenanne vs Fingal game.

Consider the topic off limits.

glennane 4 the ihl!!! Butler is a living legend!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Steve, is there any clarity for what happens if, as stated, teams finish level for IHL placings?

"supporters" !! really, some people who play hockey live in a dream world - if you exclude, both subs benches & Management team -there where 10 interested spectators at the glenanne v fingal game - intimidation from spectators - none

Both sets of players acting the maggot & throwing shapes yes,

umpires did there job thats what they are there for.

In answer to 8.25 here is what it says in the rules:
Teams will be ranked according to the number of points each has accumulated in the competition.
If at the end of the league matches, two or more teams have the same number of points these teams will be ranked according to their respective number of matches won.
If there remains equality among two or more teams, then these teams will be ranked according to their respective goal difference (which means Goals for less Goals against) with a positive goal difference always taking precedence over a negative one.
If there still remains equality between two or more teams, then these teams will be ranked according to their respective number of goals for.
Should there still remain equality between two or more teams, then the results of the matches played between (only) those teams involved will be taken into consideration to determine the ranking of the tied teams.
