Men's weekend round-up

Corinthian 2 (Garth Ancher, Robbie Byrnes) Pembroke 2 (Alan Sothern 2)
In Pembroke's first major test without their international quartet, they came up against a rejuvenated Corinthian side who were unlucky not to win the game in the end. Pembroke dropped their first points of the season and, at times, looked overly complacent. They led twice before being pegged back.

UCD 1 (Glenn Holmes) TRR 3 (Kyle Good, Colin Huet, Gary Ringwood ps)
Rovers maintained their winning run to move within a point of Pembroke against a UCD side that defended compactly, limiting Three Rock to scarce clear-cut chances but they had enough in the tank to win out.

Bray 3 (Phil Davis, Grattan Evans, Simon Cox) Kilkenny 7 (Tom Manning 2, Hugh Kelly, Gary Sharman, John Lazenby, Richie Dore, Richie O'Malley)
Kilkenny banged in another seven goals to make it 11 in two away trips which, if was not clear after last week's win over UCD, guarantees their division 1 status - not bad for a team who were not sure they would be able to compete at this level when they won Division 2 last season. Tom Mannin banged in another pair while the members of Kilkenny College's Irish Schools win in 1999, Hugh Kelly and Gary Sharman, have been massivey influential all season.

Glenanne 2 (Paul Fitzpatrick, Eddie O'Malley) YMCA 1 (Mikey Fry)
The Glens will probably be the most excited side to get by the impending return of their international duo as they followed up defeat to Monkstown by sneaking by YM. Pembroke's draw gives them a vague sniff of retaining the title as they lie seven points back.

Corinthians second goal yesterday was outstanding! Pembroke were fairly poor! Ym obv improving or else glens are just falling out of the top 3!

YM sat with 11 men behind the ball for the whole game. scored off a short corner, fair enough but if this is the so called team of the future i was expecting a bit more attackin flair. Pure negative they were

In fairness we wern't poor corinthians just played well. Surprising to see them where they are in the table since they are a good side. We'll still take the title, glennane aren't great without their internationals as shown yesterday just about beating YM!

Saturday was the closest UCD have come this season to nicking points from one of the bigger teams. They had a goal disallowed early on, then hit the crossbar and missed a stroke at 2-0. With a bit of luck things could have been different!

Corinthians played well yesterday! Better team than monkstown in my eyes.

Garth Ancher goal of the season.have not seing much of that class this season.

well to be fair......glens hammered Ym (the team of the future bla bla)!!! Ym only had 2 shorts...and had ZERO shots from play!! it can fairly hard to play against a team who throws 11 players behind the ball!!

Considering they 'scored' their winning goal by kicking the ball into the net, and YM were without Andy Walker, i think a draw would have been at least a fair result. YM on the way up, Glenanne on the way out

I saw the glenanne vs Ym game. Ym defended the top of their circle for most of the second half in which they had no shots, no corners and only entered the glenanne 25 twice. Glenanne are lacking a decent forward. I counted at least 4 openers in the second half that they squandered. They had smething like 12 corners also with no result!

Great last comment! Monkstown have thrashed Corinthians 4-0 and 4-1 this year and in both Monkstown didn't even really have to break sweat. probably two of the the easiest games for monkstown this year. Monkstown supporter.

Although YM prtotested furiously at the end of the game....Eddie did NOT kick the ball into the net. I guess they were just dissapointed they lost having come so close to earning a draw

Can people stop commenting on YM nearly doing this and missing this person and that person, its getting tiring! Results speak for themselves and stats dont lie, Kilkenny are above YM!!! Fact!

Kilkenny certainly play to their strengths. They dont create too many opportunities, but score alot of set pieces and counter attack with great pace. Kilkenny have been severely under-estimated, and should be commended for what they have achieved this season.I still think YM will finish ahead of them come the end of the season. Its just my opinion, but obviously it remains to be seen.

I happened to be the only spectator standing behind the goalposts when Glenanne got their second goal of the match.

The YM lads must have been in a bad position to see Eddie hit the ball in the air with his stick. It was clear as day from my side of the goal. It's annoying to have a good and important goal tarnished like that.

As was said above, YM were obviously really annoyed at coming so close to getting some sort of a result.

Sundays result against UCD was a better performance, although there should have been more goals. The last couple of weekends have been busy with double games / indoor etc. Should be good training for Europe at Easter.

in respect to eddie kicking the ball into the goal

i was on the pitch and 2 yards away from him and i assure u it was a kick however slight it was but it was kicked in

YM were robbed on saturday. put it this way, glennane's second goal was a volley that adriano himself wud have been proud of!

Anonymous said...

how wer ym robbed they put 11 men behind the ball for the game scored from a breakaway pc..... and had zero shots on goal from open play.... glenanne dominated nd shud hav won by a lot more if it wasnt for poor finishing....

Anonymous said...

as for the last comment why were you watching eddie when you should be defending? i was at the match in fairness to the umps he gave the goal listned to the protests only 1 defender questioned him and that was the guy who should have been marking eddie, consulted his other ump see if there was a infringement they both agreed the goal was good...

Wht did you not post my Gleinster glasses comment? I see plenty of pro-Glenanne comments. Free speech

YM- have gota learn to take these tight results on the chin and learn from them! in fairness i think they are a well balanced side but obvisouly need to put as much effort on the pitch as they do to defending themselves on this blog! Town to catch Glenanne's 3rd spot in my eyes! Two horse race for the title! Rovers have far more strength and dept than the glenns, and should be able to nick the title away from Pembroke!

Anonymous said...

Rovers havent a chance of nicking the league from Pem...Pem the only unbeaten side still and got through a couple of tough fixtures while the internationals were away (Fingal won 3-1, Corinth drew 2-2)...now that they welcome back the irish boys + fulton, and with flannery on his way back from inj they should begin to put some daylight between themselves and rovers...

As a YM player in the Glenanne game i dnt think we were robbed but i do think a draw would have been a fair result. I missed two corners in the last minute which would have made it 2-2. To say "glenanne HAMMERED YM" would be a bit over the top considering the score was 2-1? I couldn't see whether he kicked it on or not but 3 players around the ball said he did......

Pembroke will win the title....Three Rock absolutely robbed Glens in the league match between the two(fair enough it's about winning and all that) but on that performance they aren't good enough

Anonymous said...

ye it doesn't take a genious to work out that

firstly, the umpire was from glennane and that could have been a deciding factor in awarding the goal that was kicked

Secondly, there had been previous incedents with regards to the umpire and abuse from the YM players

all in all, they did have a goal disallowed in the first half which was legitimate so it all evens it self out-Spectator

I dont understand why everyone is giving so much time on this site to YM.

When they win a game of some importance, they can then brag about how good their youngsters are!

Stop the whinging!

More Glenanne bashing - YAWN - get over it folks! Accept the reality - hockey is played in Tallaght and there are very successful teams coming from this working class area!
