Irish Junior and Challenge ties off *Updated*

The IHA has announced that all competitions under their jurisdiction this weekend - the Irish Junior and Challenge competitions - have been called off. The decision to postpone these matches has been taken in light of the current weather conditions and in the interest of personal safety.

The replay date for these fixtures will be announced early next week but can advise they will not take place on weekend of January 16 due to Irish Senior Cup.

The Leinster men's branch have followed suit and are asking clubs to look into potential refixture dates but added that they "may have to consider extending the season" in light of the weather prognosis for the next ten days.

It follows the decision of the Leinster ladies branch and the Munster branch to cancel all hockey this weekend.

Can someone in The Leinster Branch Mens Section please stand up and take some responsibility? Its 4 pm on Thursday afternoon and its about -5 degrees outside - all schools closed, road conditions horrendous and all other branches have called off fixtures this weekend, giving everyone an early opportunity to make other plans. The forecast for the next couple of days is for the situation to get worse, particularly on Sunday - what are the mens section waiting for? Umpires are not too sure whats going on, senior clubs are frantically organising gyms for indoor sessions and match secretarys are waiting on tender hooks! I know postponements are a nightmare to fit in later in the season due to an already congested calender, but really, hockey is supposed to be a fun game played on pristine astro surfaces - its not going to happen this weekend! Leinster Branch Mens Section - do the common sense thing - ASAP. From frustrated match secretary PS - 4 week winter break?, or is that too much common sense aswell?

January 7, 2010 5:33 PM - Awesome idea mate, just snowball fights instead of hockey, it'd be the only time you'd see Navan hammer Pembroke firsts and we could probably put out our thirds for that, they're the meanest bunch we've got, gas!

Nice picture...

It would be great to get pictures of all the grounds under snow so they could be used for future posts when this thing happens.

Good decision all round. Safety and common sense first. Fair play to the branch for making the call. I know its a nightmare to have to re-organise all these fixtures. Hopefully the clubs will do as much as they can themselves to aleviate the fixtures nightmare
