Railway ease into Potter quarter-final

Jacqui Potter Cup - second round
Railway Union 3 (Jean McDonnell, Nikki Evans, Kate Dillon) UCD 0
Railway showed little sign of a Christmas hangover as they played at an entirely different tempo to UCD at Park Avenue to ease into the last eight of the Jacqui Potter Cup and build confidence ahead of Saturday's Irish Senior Cup semi-final at Pegasus.

Jean McDonnell cracked home a penalty corner in the tenth minute - the fifth attacking corner to their name - taking the simple route after various switches went awry. Numerous chances came and went before Nikki Evans got a delightful touch to Kate Dillon's clever pass after beating two defenders in the 25. When well-placed to shoot, she angled a diagonal ball in Evans' direction and she applied the finish for 2-0 with the last play of the half.

UCD showed more promise at the start of the second period, earning their first circle penetration in the first minute of the second half and notched up four corners after the turnaround as a more aggressive press, led by Rosie Carrigan, drew better field position.

But shots on goal were scarce, Emer Lucey with the pick of the tackled to prevent a shot, and Railway had much the more threatening openings - Cecelia Joyce ballooning one particular chance after brilliantly rounding Grace O'Flanagan. Nonetheless, Dillon reversed high for 3-0 in the 65th minute and a place in the next round was confirmed.

ANY more photos from the match?

Kept it simple? I might disagree with you on that.

Yes they were professional and there basics were superb but did you see how many first time passes and deflections by midfielders were in the game. That is definately not simple, but they are probably the only team in the country that can make those skills look simple.

That's the lot from last night.

Weekend preview?!?!?!?

yeah, some passages of play were very slick, but Railway will find Pegasus much stiffer competition this weekend.

Well Railway have faced some stiff competition already this year and are yet to walk away losers from any tie. Don't forget UCD beat Pegasus in the final last year and Railway just eased past them on Wednesday night. Pegasus will find it hard to keep up with Railway's large squad after losing a couple of players in the last year.

You can't compare last season to this season, teams change, situations change, etc. The final last year was great but no one was really expecting UCD to win. They played brilliantly on the day and broke pegasus. You never know whats going to happen in a cup match.Pegasus are a good side and they'll give Railway a good run for their money
