Sherriff rescues points for Pembroke

Men's Division One:
Pembroke 4 (Alan Sothern 3, Justin Sherriff) UCD 3 (Ronan Flannery 2, Gavin O'Halloran)
For the second day running, UCD recovered from a 3-1 deficit but, again, failed to take any tangible reward despite contributing to one of the games of the season thus far at Serpentine Avenue. Justin Sherriff scored mere moments before the final whistle to take all three points for Pembroke and move them within a point of table-topping Corinthian.

The students made good use of rare forays into the hosts territory in the first half to take the lead through Gavin O'Halloran, catching a sweet rebound after an initial drag-flick was saved by Antoine Bruneau. Alan Sothern dragged home an equaliser for 1-1 at the interval and he scored twice more to give Pembroke a strong advantage - finishing his hat-trick with touch to Mick O'Connor's reverse cross.

But, showing the energy and team spirit so apparent against Monkstown in the cup, Ronan Flannery slapped in two corner switches against his former clubs and the possibility of denting Pembroke's title hopes was very real.

But the reigning Leinster champs had the final say as they superbly worked an opening through Conor Harte and Andy McConnell to set up Sherriff who grabbed his fifth goal on his comeback weekend with a typical piledriver.

Glenanne 3 (Gary Shaw, Johnny Goulding, Stephen Butler) Monkstown 1 (Andrew Ward)
Six points and two fixtures crossed off the list were the vital statistics as Glenanne did the necessary to overcome Monkstown at St Mark's this afternoon. They were comfortable for long periods but the Town rallied in the second half but, after a lengthy break due to Steven Doran's injury, their challenge petered out as Stephen Butler scored a corner to settle matters.

Gary Shaw's bullet shot and Johnny Goulding's finish put the greens 2-0 up at half-time. Andrew Ward pulled one back as the Town enjoyed their best spell but the were unable to carry that momentum on after Doran received treatment for several minutes. Butler struck late on to complete a perfect weekend for the Glens.

Mills Cup second round
Bray 4 (Simon Cox 3, Stuart Collier) Weston 3 (Enda Tucker, Phil Barron, Shane O'Hare)
Bray produced an incredible turnaround in form as they converted Saturday's 9-1 loss into a gutsy 4-3 win over Weston in the garden county this afternoon to become the last division two side standing. Simon Cox returned for the game and his hat-trick was the key factor to put Bray into the quarter-finals where they will play Monkstown.

unlucky weekend for the students, kept the big names in both games quiet

Were Pembroke missing players?

Anonymous said...

Not by the look of the photos, missing keeper but Harte, Gormley, McConnell, Sothern, Sherriff, O'Connor, G&M Elliott, Fulton pictured, prob have enough normally for most teams.

Its disresectful to UCD to ask/presume Pembroke were missing players just because the students pushed them so close. You should be congratulating them on their performance not presuming the opposition were not at their best. Missing Harte in goals, that was it! Well done to UCD who have proved this weekend they are a team on the up! Keep it going.

as an independent I was at the game.

at 3-3 it looked like the game was going to be tied..

It was the last 10 seconds of the game that made it 4-3.. not even 10 seconds....

Just shows that Pembroke keep going to the end and don't stop until the job is done.

UCD - learn to bring the ball to the corner and keep it there......McInroy has done somethings right at that club but he needs to teach his players how to kill a game off when they are 2 minutes to go at 3-3...

Railway CUp Result:
Kilkenny: 1 Glenanne 4

Harte has won Pemboke so much in the last 3 years. Glenanne would have won three more major competitions if it was not for him. Fact. thats why people ask. No disrespect. He is world class. Unlucky UCD.

Pembroke minus Harte aren't quite the same proposition.

Harsh to say Pembroke wouldn't have won things in the last few yrs if it wasn't for dave Harte...answer me this,if he played for monkstown or railway would they have won everything in the last few seasons too?people very dismissive of the fact that Pembroke have the majority of the Irish back 5,a midfield full of caps and some of the bet strikers the country have ever seen.the most talented squad, two of their recent five successes were won without Harte, one with doran in goals,so while you may think he is the only reason you are very wrong

I'm guessing it's a reference specifically to the wonder save off Shane O'Donoghoe in the ihl final last year with a minute to go... that save defo won that title for Pembroke!

Pembroke the best squad by a million miles on Irish hockey.Fact.

I believe doran has a cracked rib from the fall... Freak accident from what I've been told... I would imagine he'll be out for a couple of weeks though... A loss for th ihl game on sat

theres no stoping pembroke we are the best. always have been

What's all this UCD garble?
Yes they came close twice, and yes they are a decent team. But at the end of the day this weekend they played 2 and lost 2.

no one said pembroke wouldnt have won things without harte just not as many things. they dont defend the same when hes not in the team. hes the best keeper in ireland by a country mile and they have struggled without him. Would they have lost to Corinthians if he was playing? Doubtful. Would they have beaten UCD by more if he was playing? Probably. HE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE TO THEIR ENTIRE TEAM

Still think Navan 3rds could take you in a snowball fight

Congrats to Bray for turning it all around on Sunday, 1-0 down after three mins it could have been a case of here we go again after Sat. Best turnaround of the season?

Think it's fair to say that there's no way that the comment left at 12.19 was by a Pembroke player!!

They are a class apart squad wise, I wouldn't want to begin to count the amount of caps they've accumulated all together and to say they wouldn't have won anything without Davy is ridiculous but just like every other team if they are not at their best they can be vulnerable.

When they are on form they are streets ahead, simple as.

Nothing to do with Bray turning things around!Weston got what they deserved and that is it! Not startin four 1st team players isnt the best thing to do!

Harte was playing in the Mills Cup final when Corinthian beat them last year right?

Harte is a great player no doubt about it and he is a loss to Pembroke.

But it's a team that wins games, not individual players..

What has happened to Bray this year, how can they go from competing in the Div1/Div2 playoff last year to currently sitting at the bottom of Div2 with no points?

Anonymous said...

Harte hasn't single handidly won pembroke anything, you're right. But Glens must be sick of the sight of him.

He's the only one who gets the better of Butler on a consistent basis at corner time. The closest games pembroke have are when they meet Glenanne and Harte is always the difference. The last 3 times they have played on the national stage in a knockout situation (i.e when it really matter) the game has gone to a penalty shootout. pembroke have won every time.

I think it's fair to say that if Glenanne had David harte in goal the last season and a half they would have collected alot more than two neville cups. Two great, evenly matched sides. One great keeper.

To 4.29pm re Bray.
From last years squad, Bray unfortunately lost, for various reasons, 6 / 7 players without any new replacements. Hence the squad is much smaller with several of last years 2nds now having to play 1sts.

Anonymous said...

Surely if you are giving Harte credit for getting the Glens to strokes in their two cup games last year Doran must deserve some credit for getting Pembroke there too!?!? He is a massive player for them but I don't think he is the lone difference between the teams, they are very close, little things decide the big games...

Anonymous said...

Sounds Like Division 2 could be down to 5 teams next yeaar looking at Bray Hockey Club. if they are losing players they'll probably drop their firsts to divsion 4 or 5.

Glens to beat Pembroke in the ISC, they are due to beat them and lately Pembroke not playing well, glens scoring for fun, can't wait to see the game, drinks on the balcony anyone, glens 5-3

Where did bray traditionally get their male players from, St. Gerards? Must be hard to bring on youth down there. Do they have a good youth set up?

Anonymous said...

not a chance. vogels is clearly the best keeper in the world then hart would be number 2

Anonymous said...

2nd best goalkepper in the world - really what nonsense - he is the best in ireland - but not world class

Remember hockey in ireland is a fairly poor standard compared to the world stage - results by clubs & international team at world class events shows this.

Does anyone know the scores from the railway cup 1/4 finals so far only the MHC/Fingal result is up!

Alfie saves the day with a hatrick!!

Bray don't really have a feeder school in the area. Gerards have never had an interest in the club. Men's teams feed off friends etc and with dwindling numbers it looks like they are unfortunately on the way out of Div 2 and potentially men's hockey unless something is done.
