Humphries on hockey

The aftermath of the Hunky Dory’s affair evidently has provided an excellent showcase for hockey in Ireland.

Famed Irish Times writer Tom Humphries' piece on the issue a week ago, concerning sponsorship and media coverage of women's sport, drew praise from Railway manager Helen Johnston and prompted her to invite the Locker Room columnist to Belfield for last Sunday’s Senior Cup finals.

Humphries accepted the offer and was evidently impressed with the event as a whole, devoting this week's column, entitled "Women's hockey has everything but the audience", to the tie between Loreto and Railway.

The column will come as a welcome fillip to the IHA while the clubs involved, too, deserve huge praise for generating the atmosphere and colour in the stands for the occasion.
