Avoca U21 Cup - YMCA 1 Monkstown 0

A late Jamie Tobin deflection nicked the win for YM in a battle of two of Leinster hockey's best nurseries for underage talent.

Tobin got on the end of Darryl Walker's hard pass in a match that pitted a whole host of underage provincial players against each other, though YM were without Leinster Senior team's David Robinson who picked up a dislocated shoulder last weekend.

Monkstown started stronger, with Nick Dee and Zac Dutton creating lots of chances only to be denied by some outstanding saves from Iain Walker, and also benefitted from the involvement of Cian Speers - returning after injury.

The game evened out, thereafter with the teams even on the short corner count and looked to be heading to extra time before Tobin's late strike.

The result could be key in determining the title, both sides packed with division 1 talent.

Fair point, I only had info to hand about the YM-Monkstown match so therefore they featured.

Oh No Please no. Why????? Now were not going to stop hearing from YM about how great the future of YM is and how the rest of Leinster and Irish hockey should be shaking in the boots. All because of one win, in the U-21 cup! Please its all just too much.

ha YM future! I believe they were beatin 6-1 last year by Corinthians, big feat YM!

I didn't think Darryl was playing anymore?

Anonymous said...

No need for that! Think you must be a bitter 'town player. correct? Obviously, as you state, it's just one win in an u'21 cup, but a great win at that! Monkstown and YM are undoubtedly leading the way in the under-age production lines. Im sure there would be plenty of 'town comments if they had won the game. But they didnt! YM did! And all this without their most talented player in Robinson. C'mon YM!!!!!

who do chc have first round

think YM did really well last night, it was a good win in a tight game. I think although the corner count was equal, the shots on target tally would tell a different story. Fair play though to iain walker, he had a great game and got his team to the next round. no real need to pin that "Oh No Please no. Why?????" comment on monkstown, a lot of players from different clubs post on this and im sure everyone who posts on this is sick of that debate coming up in every new comment page. Think a lot of people are starting to back YM's opposition because of their constant attention seeking. I would like to see YM win this cup but not if it means we have to hear about it all year.

Darryl isnt playing senior division hockey as he cant train due to other commitments, unfortunately. Yet another quality player sorely missed by YM 1sts this season. He is however, available for u'21 games.

Anonymous said...

It would be fair to say Chc have a fairly strong u'21 set up. Buoyed by the likes of all the players they've managed to attract from other clubs (Murray/Carson/Micks etc)

Anonymous said...

except for ymca not having decent older players to play 1sts so that toddlers are out playing, rovers would probably have the most u-21 players on the 1st squad.timmy hill, ali haughton, mitch darling and kyle good.think they have an irish 18s keeper too, so fill the other positions and they'd have to be contenders.

Anonymous said...

i don't think anyone is denying that YM are producing the most talented underage players but the reason people are reacting negatively to such talk is that those posting the comments in favour of the YM youth seem to do it every time they do something of worth. You are producing the youth...fair play to you!! and we all believe you but please stop posting the same comment every time you win a game

Iain Walker 1 - Monkstown 0

Nothing to do with youth, we had so many chances but just couldnt score, ym youth did nothing, one lucky break and a goal.

Anonymous said...

Trr may think that they have amazing talent from their firsts for the 21s but i dont think you have looked at pembroke? 4 senior internationals(Dave and Conor Harte, Sothern and Tim lewis) and plenty of talent to fill the gaps, i think that shows up the "3 rock 4".

where is micks from, thought he was always chc?

Anonymous said...

dont know who that bitter monkstown player is but he doesnt speak for all of us. well done YM, u played to ur strengths and won. Obviously the only player on the pitch with full irish caps is going to stand out, just so happens hes a keeper. fair play walks u had a great game. was a good goal too - bad defending.

He was origanaly with Y.M but left years ago (before he was 16). He improved immensely when he moved. Theres no doubt that chc made him the plaer he is.

Actually you are wrong I was not playing in the match for town, I am just so tired each week hearing that you YMers think the world of hockey resolves around your youth.

UCD 1-2 TRR

Although TRR had to wait until inside the last 10 minutes to get the winning goal, they dominated possession

A great performance by Herbie Bagnall in addition to many wasted opportunities by Rovers kept this match close throughout.

UCD though had some exceptional pace upfront and were diehard in chasing down the through ball and launching fast counter-attacks.

TRR eventually took the lead through a strong drive by Mitch Darling into the circle on the right where a cross/shot made it all the way through without any touches to beat the keeper at the far post. Throughout the match Tim Hill, Kyle Good and Mitch caused many problems for the UCD defence with stong drives into the D but just couldn't apply the finishing touches.

1-0 at half-time and as temperatures dropped the 2nd half was a more even affair with UCD determined to get back on terms. After going close a few times from open play they finally got the equaliser from a Shane Nolan drag flick to the bottom-right of the goal. Not the fasted of drag-flicks but full of disguise!!

With Alistair Haughton at the back Three Rock Rovers resorted more to direct aerial balls to release the attackers. One of these passes finally got in behind the UCD defence and a 2 on 1 with the keeper was exploited for a simple tap in.

UCD still had two more great chances to equalise through Paddy O'Connor with a snap shot off a bouncing ball but Stephen West just managed to shut the door in time and also smoothered the follow-up rebound.

Overall a close game in the end, but Rovers just had enough strength in depth to carry them through. Next round they face neighbours Corinthian away.

The comments about YM's young team are getting very boring. Every club has young players coming through it is just that YM have more who have been given the chance in the first team (presumably because their older players were no longer up to it). Last night's match showed that Monkstown have just as good a bunch of young players even though they had fewer with first team experience.

ym were missing players

Anonymous said...

Were onli talkin bout r young players because we dont hav much else 2 talk bout its not like were bragging r anything

I think its great that YM are so enthusiastic about their youngsters. And, just like Arsenal, its where all the best young players want to play, because they are given a chance to play week in week out against more experienced opposition. And they will improve, sometimes coming on in leaps and bounds (as seen with players like Robbo and Iain Walker). There is no doubt that there is a lot to improve on, and YM have been perhaps effected more than most with more experienced players moving on or simply giving up, which has left a huge chasm, now obviously being filled by this young crop of players. No one is saying they are world beaters, or for that matter, Leinster beaters. but there's a good thing going on there. Although clearly not getting the results they strive to achieve at present, Rome was not built in a day. Now let the sprogs carry on with posting enthusiastic comments about their team, because they deserve something!

Anonymous said...

its easy for clubs like YM to have good young players because they have a feeder school....think how hard it is for clubs not associated with any hockey school

Anonymous said...

Have a look at the league table before you get all excited YM. I can recall many clubs, TRR, Pembroke, Monkstown etc fielding 8 or 9 under 21's on their teams and still making cup finals, competing for top 3 etc. What makes you believe that winning 2 or 3 games in a very poor Leinster league means you are going places? Most top teams could'nt name more that 4 of your players.

Anonymous said...

DIfference is Arsenal are top of the league or always in the top area!! YM are always in the bottom area!! How many are in the que to join YM?

Anonymous said...

You're obviously not that up to scratch in Leinster hockey circles then. You'll be able to name a few more than 4 in seasons to come.

Anonymous said...

Every club has a feeder school! Its just unfortunate that Glenannes feeder school is St Marks

Anonymous said...

I leave most of the pro-YM comments on this site. Anyone interested in joining a debating club with me?

Anonymous said...

YM should prove to be the most talented team in division 2 next year. We have had this all before with Monkstown threatening to sweep the board with all their talented youngsters. Reality is only 4 clubs have won the league in the donkeys years, the top 3 plus Avoca in their hey day. That mould is not going to be broken soon. YM is a and always will be a social club that happens to play hockey.

Anonymous said...

Very uneducated comment left above re YM 'division 2'.

Laughable in fact.

Anonymous said...

You're right, i am not up to date with the bottom 3 of the Leinster Senior League. As for the future, its time you boys realise that being good in school does not translate to the mans game. Look at the average age of some of the clubs ahead of you and the quality of the palyers they have.

Anonymous said...

"Every club has a feeder school!"

what feeder school do fingal have then? and why is it unfortunate St.Marks is Glens feeder school, they seem to be doin well enough

Anonymous said...

the thing i find funny is that YM's "young players" are the same age as the likes of Lewis, Southern, Darling, the Harts....they all seem to be streets ahead of all of these YM lads...yes you have young players, but theyr not as good as you think,so enough of these stupid arguements!!

Anonymous said...

in other words bye bye fingal?

Anonymous said...

i dont know how many players have come of st. marks in the last four years and gone on to play division 1 but i dont think its too many. Certainly not in comparison with wesley and andrews. Sometimes the talent dries up. For example; newpark and as a result where are avoca now?

Anonymous said...

RA RA RA...YM's youngsters are awesome...YM for the under 21's cup...Rome wasnt built in a day...YM are nearly as good as Fingals pitch...RA RA RA

The mortgage tracker.

Anonymous said...

to be fair to them at least they ar getting better, same cant be said for the pitch!

Anonymous said...

good to see st. marks mixing it with the top schools, we need more feeder schools like this one to improve our league,
not from a glens player

YM will have a supper team in 3 years. With robbo, jeff walker, ian walker and all the really young lads progressing even more. I though as a spectator that the match on Wednesday was a brilliant match. I thought both Jeff Walker and Ian Walker were simply outstanding.

Anonymous said...

Above comment about video footage- talk about not letting it go...recently the only players out of Marks to play division 1 is Jonathan Kane. In earlier days, it produced Bolger, Fitzer, Clinton, Devin Kehoe, Alan Browne and several others

Just shows what can be done with a bit of effort

Anonymous said...

Just to clear up, That isnt ym players leaving most of those comments, its young lads with too much spare time trying to get people to bitch about ym somemore. grow up.

Come on the 50 comments!! Lads, just a big-up to Findlater for this site, never ceases to entertain even if Walker is probably right. Wind up merchants. It does help kill the boredom in work though.
