Corinthian three-point penalty overturned

In a statement released this afternoon, it has been confirmed that Corinthian have been cleared of any wrong-doing in relation to the registration of players for their match with Fingal on December 13.

The Leinster Branch Management Committee last night decided to allow Corinthian HC’s appeal against a decision of the Fixtures Committee to reverse the result of the league match between the sides, with the Management Committee deciding the original 5-3 result should stand.

In Corinthian's appeal, it was made clear that the IHA had confirmed that the player in question was registered with the IHA and raised no objection to the inclusion of any CHC player in competitions over which they held jurisdiction.

This was a key factor as players registered after November 1, 2008, under Branch rule 88a), needed clearance from the IHA to take part in competitions which were qualifiers to the IHL.

Commenting on the decision, club president Sean Murtagh said: "CHC was dismayed that a decision, as serious as reversing the result of a league match this late in the season, was taken by the Fixtures Committee without allowing or requesting any representation from the club.

"However, we are pleased that the Management Committee afforded us the opportunity to fully rebut the allegations on which the decision was based and we are grateful to the Management Committee for their careful and even-handed consideration of the matter.

"Decisions of the Fixtures Committee in relation to this particular issue have now twice been overturned on appeal by the Management Committee. CHC has not breached any rules or regulations and we are happy that the matter has now been brought to a conclusion.

"A lot of time and energy has been expended in dealing with these two appeals, not just by members of CHC but also by many others, including the members of the Management Committee and the IHA. We would like to express our thanks to all those concerned.

"We have held back from making any comment on this affair until now, in order to allow the process to take its course. While this may have given oxygen to rumour and misinformation, we believe it was the proper course of action. We will not be commenting further on this case which we now regard as closed."
* Speaking to the Hook on Thursday night, a spokesperson for the Fixtures Committee believes they took the right course of action and stand by their decision to initially dock Corinthian three points. They explained that their evidence suggests three breaches of registration rules occurred. They will meet on Monday night as a committee to discuss the matter further.

This is outrageous.Either they broke the rules, or they didnt. And if they didnt then why were they deducted 3 points and thrown out of the cup initially? So how many points do they actually have now?

When are the branch going to sort this kind of stuff out. its a joke that one arm interpret the rules one way and the other interpret it another way.

Stephen, is your league table now correct?
Great website, with up to date info as always.

Most rules can be interpreted in numerous ways and Corinthians are not the first team (& won't be the last) to appeal similar decisions this season or in recent seasons.

Why the Leinster Branch website was updated, announcing 3 deducted points, while things were obviously still being appealed is beyond me. Extremely irresponsible on their part, as it brought into the public domain an issue that a lot of clubs are spared the indecency of.

Well said by the Corinthians President & congratulations on your well-deserved cup win.

non-chc player.

A big problem is the way the fixtures comittee operate - they take decisions without asking the club or players for their input first--that has to change as it is unfair. also have you ever tried to read the rules and make sense of them they are a minefield-in relation to 1.29 post have you ever heard of a right to appeal and that mayb corinthians were right first time both times!! clearly the management comittee think so. ps -have you done jury service yet !!

I must agree that player registration, particularly in Leinster, has become a bit of a joke. There are rules for registering players but they are not being applied. Registration needs to be applied correctly and fairly. Any player joining after the deadline dates this season appear to be cleared regardless of the dates they join clubs. What a joke.

Rather embarrassing really! You simply cannot take away points when there is an appeal in process especially if the same appeal was won before. Bit of a cringe-worthy situation really.

did Kinfey play for their 2nds as well that day? Seems unfair to Fingal 2nds but Pembroke did it when McInroy and Symmons arrived over. Bit of a joke when you get intl players in and can have them playing in Div 3. BIG ADVANTAGE!

The Branch have a lot to answer for!!

This Fixture Committee seem to be a law unto themselves... they need to get their house in order and stop being so cavalier with these rash decisions and judgements... that upon diligent investigation are subsequently overturned!!

This does nothing but serve to undermine any future decisions that they may make.

I would not blame the Management Committee at all --at least from the Corinthian statement they gave them a hearing --the problem is clearly at Fixture Committee Level --get your house in order boys and apply fair procedures --it's the 21st century and all that --you cannot take decisions without at least giving people a right of reply --it's not a dictatorship you are running in there .

Congrats to the Management Committee --the Fixtures Committee needed to be reeled in

What is "the Branch" ?
Is it the member Clubs? Is it the various sub-committees that carry out functions necessary for us all to enjoy our game of hockey each weekend? or is it each of us, the individual club member who can / should play our part by volunteering to help in some way, rather than bitch and complain about "the Branch" what ever that is

Can I ask who is it that is running Leinster fixtures?

"The Branch" - well have you every felt like your being followed? Have you every felt like someone has been searching through your rubbish? I'm telling you they are watching... They do random acts like taking 3 points of the leinster league table and then replace it within a week or so... All we seem to know is they are called "the branch"...

What's the point in having registration riles & regulations when they are not enforced.

Those in charge are all listed on http://www.leinsterhockey.org/Public/Committees.php

The Chairperson of the Fixture's Committe is Seamus Butler.

This information is all in the Public Domain

The real problem here is who runs the Leinster Branch --is it the Fixtures Committee or is it the Management Committee --I know what the rules say !!!
