Men Division Two: Week 12 results

Naas 1 (Peter Young) Bray 4 (Simon Cox 2, Phil Davis, James Hardiman)

Bray confirmed themselves as the main contenders for the play-off position with a 4-1 win in Naas. They did so courtesy of former Monkstown-man Simon Cox's (pictured) double with one each from Phil Davis and James Hardiman.

It builds a four point gap over the other second place chasers as Suttonians and Skerries' game was postponed.

Navan 2 (Shane Dooley, Eamon Lynskey) Weston 0
Navan won the first of two ties with Weston this weekend on Saturday afternoon with an impressive home performance at Sportlink. Shane Dooley opened the scoring five minutes after half-time after his side had the better of the opening period.

Eamon Lynskey added the second with 15 minutes to go, scoring with a classy reverse-stick strike to double the advantage and Sinead Dooley's side held on with some decent defensive shape to give the Badgers their second win of the season.

Dublin University 1 (Andy Gray) Clontarf 2 (Rob Abbott, Luke Hayden)
Clontarf were pushed all the way but emerged unscathed yet again to record an eleventh straight win, beating Trinity 2-1. It now looks a case of when rather than if the Bulls win the title thanks to Rob Abbott's drag-flick and Luke Hayden's rebound.

They now need just five points from four games to take a division one slot. Andy Gray got the students response with a cracking effort to tie the game up at 1-1.

Neville Davin Cup round-up:
Weston bounced back to beat Navan 6-0 on Sunday and make it into the semi-finals of the competition. Shane O'Hare scored four times with Phil Barron and Paul Kennedy getting on the score sheet.

Clontarf were given a severe test by Avoca, pushed to extra-time before prevailing 4-3. Tarf had earlier led 3-1 at half-time but Stephen Brownlow's second goal was added to by Jamie Scott to tie the game up. Skerries game with Dublin Uni has also been postponed.

Whats going on with Skerries?

Most of the team was away this weekend so we needed the games called off. Simple as that

Surely if u had gotten Branch approval for a postponement and had advised Suttonians of this fact out of coutesy, there wouldn't be an issue. To just not turn up is an embarrassment.

I think it's disgraceful that a team looking for promotion to Leinsters top flight can have that sort of attitude and show such a lack of respect to another club.

Yes Trinity did have matches called off, but purely because the academic year doesn't start until October in the college, which I think is a reasonably good excuse for a delay in matches.

Last I checked, Trinity have also played the most matches in Division 2 along with Naas and Weston.

will suttonians get the points they shouldnt have to replay a match where the opposition dont turn up

any other team bring players up from the seconds like Sutton did against Weston. To call a match off because players are away is a disgrace. Suttonians should be awarded the points.

trinity and ucd get extra time at the start of every season btw...

By the way the game was called off on Thursday and the branch approved the postponement of the game. So it wasnt just a case of not turning up. This has happened skerries twice this year when a game was called off as late as the morning of the game and we accepted this and said we will still play the match.

As a division 1 player I am a bit perplexed as to why the branch would grant Skerries a posponement.

Not really as simple as that. Can teams now get games called off for players being away?? What about if players are injured?? Should proof such as girlfriends permission slips be sought after by the branch.

Really hoped that lessons would have been learnt by the branch after Clontarf v Navan fiasco!

Surley a postponment cannot be granted due to lack of players, Correct me if i am wrong but skerries have two teams, Surley they should be made field their seconds in place of the players that were away and seek a postponment for the 2nds which would be fair enough, If both teams are ''away on holidays'' the club really needs to look at its commitment levels, I hope it suits sutts to play a sunday match or mid week refix in the run-in!

I see on the LB website that on the 28th of feb Skerries 2nds put 4 past smithfield in a div 7 match, I would be fairly pissed off if i was a smithfield player who gave up my afternoon to go and get trounced by the skerries 1st/2nd team because afew of their 1st team players couldnt make it to the Div 2 game in Sutton!

Question for Dotsie:Where did the 11 or more players come from that beat Smithfield on sat and why couldnt they play Div 2 against sutton?

I think it is a discrace and totally unfair on Smithfield, Suttonians and the rest of the Div 2 & 7 teams that Skerries have been allowed to do this and as far as i am aware is tatally against the rules which are set out in relation to postponing matches!

I would be very suprised if the Branch allow the Div 7 result to stand, and possibly we could see a fine and a points deduction for the div 2 Skerries team aswell!

not that I condone calling it off but they didnt just not turn up thats a complete exaggeration.

three more points on the board for navan,
good stuff.

Do people not realise that hockey is a minority sport? We have to encourage people to play the game not birrate them when they cannot field a team. Its well known teams invent 'bereavements' in order to get cancellations, at least Skerries were honest in their approach.

Skerries did try to put a team together for sat against sutton with there 2nd players but still could not fill a team. On sunday they had 9 players playing against smithfield. Why are skerries getting so much abuse for this when other clubs have done it the past. As i said not so long ago we had a game called off on the morning of the match because they opposition did not have a goalie. They even offered us the points but we said we would play them again. We are a honest club.

Skerries, I wouldnt worry about what any of the prior posters have to say about your situation at the weekend. If they aren't man enough to put their name to it then their opinion is not worth even thinking about. Del

so they had to postpone a couple of games big deal.

I know nothing about branch approval or if the lads or the branch let Sutton know. All I know is I was told we do not have a match on Saturday because most of the team is away. If you want to complain, then get on to the LHB and complain to them, not here signing your posts as annonymous

Surely people should be looking to encourage the growth of the game in areas that are not traditional hockey strongholds like Skerries ? Can see why people from the bigger clubs wouldn't see a problem with fielding the second team but I'm guessing that a lot of that team is made up of very young players so that would have been pointless all round.

Look how much of a pain it is fitting matches called off due to snow/ice into our already busy fixture list.

You can't have teams calling off games just because players are off on holidays, doing their hair or just not feeling up to it.

If every team was allowed to do what Skerries did there would be no point in the Branch creating a fixture list. Matches would be cancelled/arranged ad-hoc.

Skerries should lose the points and recieve a fine.

There's two issues here to me it seems. The likes of Skerries and Naas need support as clubs with a small player base who Leinster hockey need to encourage so that they can grow to spread the game rather than being sanctioned. There should be good opportunities in each area with larger populations moving to these commuter towns and would be good places to focus on. Look at the rapid growth of Navan!

On the other hand, Dotsie's comment suggests a casual attitude to fulfilling fixtures and their twos playing subsequently goes in direct contravention of Branch rules.

I would be interested to find out if Skerries v Suttonians was a refix or was it in the book that every player gets at the start of the year.

If the fixture was in the book it is a disgrace that the branch might sanction a posponement.

Did these guys book hoildays back in Sept?

The way the cup game was called off was a disgrace! the game wasn't cancelled by skerries, Trinity rang on thurs night, having heard nothing, enquiring about the start time to be informed that the club had "forgetten" about the fixture and was unable to play. This is not how things should be done. If they are not interested in the Neville-Davin cup then don't enter it!

Wouldn't it be come time, after many years of of posponed/resceduled matches, for a 'winter top' of two months ? The old excuse we cannot because of 'the tennis' doesn't stand up. See how many 'catch up matches' need to be played during the week. Just bad planning. No excuses.

My comment coming across as a casual attitude towards fulfilling fixtures is that as I have nothing to do with the organising or postponing of fixtures. I just turn up for the matches when Im told to, thats it. As I said already, stop whinging under anonymous posts here and complain to the LHB if you have issues
