Sandford claim inaugural development title

Given the competition was first proposed by Sandford Park's previous head of hockey, Tim Barwise, it was only fitting that they should pick up the inaugural Developing School's title at Grange Road.

They came out on top of St Mark's CS 3-0, showing an edge in experience in the final showdown. The Ranelagh school opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Patrick Carey squeezed the ball past Carl Crosbie.

Eliot Simons got the second before half-time, finishing tidily after being set through one-on-one. St Mark's, though, did create a couple of clear-cut chances, the best of which fell to Christopher Delmar but his shot hit the outside of the post.

But Darragh Herlihy completed the scoring midway into the second half to seal victory. Mark's had a few late forays into the Sandford circle, the pick of them seeing Luke Forrester denied by a sprawling Stephen Lavery, but to no avail and Sandford had their first hockey silverware since claiming the senior league in 2000.

Great history at the school for hockey, you only have to walk the halls to see photos of a baby-fat Simon Kershaw, Gary Ryan with hair, both Findlaters (nutters), current Irish Captain Ronan Gormley, Turloch O'Siochain's thousand yard stare, and Trevor Dagg's manic grin.

Hope, with that bit of luck you need for a small school, they can get the pride in the jersey back.

Congrats all.

Go on the Park.
