Doherty double sends Corinthian top

Leinster Men's Division One:
Three Rock Rovers 1 (Pierre de Voux) Corinthian 3 (Brian Doherty 2, Lucas Piccioli)
Corinthian took their time but eventually got the goals their pressure deserved to take the derby-day points from Grange Road as Brian Doherty once again showed his prowess at the set-piece. Davy Carson's deft deflection went just wide but Doherty opened the scoring emphatically high past Charlie Henderson - in nets for one last fling with Stephen West on holiday in Barcelona - for 1-0 midway through the half. Henderson was in top form, keeping out four more corner efforts before the break.

Rovers' chances were scarce but of a gilt-edged nature. An excellent reverse-stick cross from Michael Maguire did set Patrick Shanahan through on goal but his tame finish slid past Ross Murray's post. They did level, though, 30 seconds before the break when Pierre de Voux rebounded neatly on his reverse for 1-1.

De Voux missed out on a second, set free by Sven Galjaardt, denied by Murray's speed off his line before the reds took control. The go-ahead goal was a fortunate one; Lucas Piccioli broke brilliantly down the left flank before pulling back from the endline. He found the stick of Garry Ringwood who sent Henderson the wrong way and the ball dribbled into the backboard.

And Doherty - following up an incredible aerial assault with some 60-metre bombs dropped into Rovers' territory - sealed the deal with a low corner late on for 3-1.

Clontarf 0 YMCA 4 (Mikey Fry, Rob Whelan, Simon Mills, Luke Chadwick)

YMCA closed the gap on the top five courtesy of a fine second half performance to put away Clontarf at Mount Temple. The Bulls had the two clearest chances of the first half with both Ben Hewitt and Tom Noonan giving up clear openings in the face of Graeme Woods to leave the score-sheet blank at the break. But the Y stepped up a gear in the second period, hitting the front when Mikey Fry deflected in Cliff Bailey's pin-point pass. Simon Mills netted a low corner, Rob Whelan scored from play before Luke Chadwick's reverse-stick effort completed the scoring.

Railway Union 2 (Mark English, Peter English) UCD 5 (Robbie McFarlane 2, Rob Lynch, John McInroy, Tim Hill)
An incredible four-goal burst in the first half saw UCD pick up their first win of the campaign and raise spirits for the second half of the season as they disposed of Railway Union at Park Avenue. Mark English had given Railway the lead inside five minutes but a blistering spell saw the students 4-1 up in jig-time. Robbie McFarlane struck twice finding an innovative route past Stephen O'Keefe from play and deflecting home a corner. Rob Lynch's squeeze-shot from a tight angle and John McInroy's deflection made up the comfortable half-time margin which Tim Hill augmented in the second half with a third, well-worked corner move of the day. Peter English's drag-flick pulled one back for Railway but the two sides are now level in eighth on four points.

Tarf had there second string GK this week. Ian Maxwell who played excellently definite man of the match, Tarf could have done a lot better they were their own worst enemies shouted and giving out to each other once the first goal went in. 1st half a lot stronger and they proved they belong in Div 1. Just need to keep those heads up.

So is Div 1 gonna be decided by what happens when The Glens & Pembroke come back from int'l duty...??

Why aren't their 2s teams dominating Div 3 when each club can concentrate on it??

Interesting....................

Tune in to find out...same Bat time, same Bat channel!!

Bit strange clontarf didn't wear away jerseys the colours look pretty similar in the photos!

What does this defeat mean for railway? appears to have been quite an easy win for UCD....

Out of interest does any team with an international player in it have the right to re-arrange fixtures played when there are internationals on?

The glens only have 1 more player missing than YM but YM are playing their matches and the glens are not. Fair enough Pembroke would be missing almost half their team but the glens?

Not an attempt to wind anyone up or anything, i'm just wondering.

Clontarf dominated the 1st half versus Ymca and should have had a good lead by the break..Missed chances are costing them in the league and as soon as Ymca scored in the second half there heads dropped..They need to get some points before xmas though otherwise they could be doomed..

well 4:05am Glens beat a good Fingal 2's 6-1 or something. I'd say having no 1's game made a big difference there.........having said that i dont think Fingal 1's had a game either but i'd say Glens benefitted from it more. I'm sure the Fox in the box probably got all 6.

He actually got 4. Making Revington regret not taking to Argentina...

YM are missing two first team players due to the WCQ, Walker and Steven Barry(Conditioning coach)
Seems like double standards to me!!!

Whatever about the rights and wrongs of it, we will have a ridiculous situation where the Glens have played four games and UCD 10 by the time these players return.

If we make the World Cup, which is in March, what happens to the league? Its meant to be finished by March 23 or something like that. If teams are allowed play on after those dates, it really makes an uneven playing field if sides know what they have to do weeks in advance. The ladies div 2 last year was a bit silly last year with sides playing a decisive league match six weeks after the rest of the division was supposed to have finished against a side who had stopped training for over a month. Its not a good way to run a league but looks like it could happen.

On the converse side, the Glens could be forced to play a whole heap of matches in a glut which could see them slip up.

On another note, I see Pembroke have brought forward their Mills cup tie to Tuesday night to get the game played.

Surely Div 1 Clubs have big enough squads/panels to play the games?

Rules for lower leagues are that you have to pull players up from teams below to fulfill fixtures, and you postpone your lowest team game if necessary.

Either that or you postpone all the div 1 fixtures, not just those with internationals. That makes it fairer across the board and doesnt give one club an advantage re 2nds teams etc

Is it possible that you might run the risk of alienating club and country and that in fact with the lure of EHL hockey that some international players that do not get a lot of game time might choose instead to play for their clubs. Hardly a recipe for bringing the national side forward
