Revington dealt double injury blow

Paul Revington was dealt a huge blow on the eve of Ireland’s World Cup Qualifying campaign as both Joe Brennan (below, right) and David Hobbs (left) were ruled out of the trip to Argentina.

The Irish team flew out to South America this morning without the duo as they both lost their race against time to be fit for the competition and have been replaced by David Ames and Peter Caruth.

Speaking about the late changes, Revington said: “The team will miss David's power in midfield and the experience he brings to the Team, and will also miss the presence and quality that Joe Brennan has added to our Team throughout 2009.

“The squad has, however, developed a good degree of depth in strength over the past few months and weare very fortunate to announce David Ames as the replacement for David Hobbs and Peter Caruth as the replacement for Joe Brennan.

“David Ames returned to the squad over the Summer (Celtic Cup) after a tough start to 2009 filled with injury and he has progressively built up the form that makes him such an exciting prospect for Irish Hockey.

"Ames brings a terrific skill set, a strong physical engine, a penalty corner injection and a youthful energy that will benefit the Ireland Team immensely in Argentina. Peter Caruth has improved consistently throughout 2009 and will be a player going to Argentina with form and confidence on his side."

The squad finished their build-up last week with two fixtures against England, something which Revington believes was of huge benefit, especially in light of cancellations earlier in the warm-up schedule.

"The games against England mid week were of great benefit to the players attending as well as for our efforts to improve the depth of the Irish Squad in general.

“England offered an extremely high tempo opportunity to all players and this will have massive benefit for our Team traveling to Argentina. It was also great to have the full team together in Banbridge on Saturday evening and I know the guys are all excited to be together again and continue the friendship and locker room spirit that has been the foundation for their performances in 2009."

Ireland tip off their campaign against the world number 19's when they play USA on day Saturday.

McConnell should have replaced Hobbs..more experienced player and showed he can do it against top quality oppostion against England last week..scoring a goal in the 4-4 all draw backed up by strong performances..

mcconnell vs ames...played with and against both, reckon the right decision was made

Good luck to the team away! Revington is traveling without the most complete Irish striker. The inform Eddie "fox in the box" O'mally would have ensured Ireland's ticket to the world cup.

McConnell is basically a good club player hardly international quality...Ames is the better choice.

Best of luck to the team!!

I could just imagine the Argentinians trying to figure out the elusive movement of the fox.
They'd never have known what hit them.

If we are suggesting 'O Malley' you might as well also suggest jdedward .... !!!

The 'Fox in the box' media machine just keeps on turning... much like the fox himself in the circle....

The 'Fox' is Irish hockey's Andy Reid...

Anyone have an idea about televised matches yet? Stephen??

The schedule for the matches is here: http://www.quilmes2009.sportcentric.com/vsite/vcontent/page/custom/0,8510,5225-199349-216572-47752-302629-custom-item,00.html

Presumably the times are local but they're only 2 hours behind GMT in Quilmes, Argentina... http://worldtimeengine.com/dotime/Quilmes,_Argentina

Hockey needs to be getting more airtime on TV. I'm fed up watching U-17 world cup football or moto GP on Eurosport. Surely hockey is a better spectacle than that rubbish! I notice that the qualifiers in New Zealand are being televised. Argentinian hockey get your finger out!

i'm slightly confused by the selection - isn't brennan a defender & caruth a forward?

aside, i think caruth should have been in ahead of mitch darling as he's more likely to do the unexpected - which could be all the difference in a tight game.

and what's the situation with phelie? is he still injured or was he simply overlooked?

Eddie is a good club player - but not international but hey i dont pick the team so maybe one day - 2012 must be on his target list

My reading of it is that Paul Gleghorne was introduced to the squad as a player for both midfield and defence. He now reverts to being an out and out defender with Ames as midfield/forward cover, Caruth as a forward and Jermyn likely to play more in midfield.

Simple! Phelie pulled up in one of those EHL games the other week so maybe that's still an issue

hobbsie wasn;t selected b cos his fitness let him down

not quite the forum i know, but whats the IHA EGM all about?

i think even paul gleghorne would admitt that he is not cover for midfield so bango think you got it wrong there, he is a center back.

revs will be forced to play butler in center back as cover for the lads.

Revs doesn't seem to think so.

from October 22:

Revington said of Gleghorne’s inclusion: “Paul brings good personal form into the team and provides a good balance to the team across the different playing lines.”

i garentee you now. paul will not play in midfield against belgium and argentina, and if he does its a strange one.
hes a good defender but not a midfielder
