Stylish Railway set up title decider
UCD 0 Railway Union 2 (Jean McDonnell, Cecelia Joyce)
A goal in each half from a dominant Railway Union meant the season, as long looked the case, will come down to the meeting with Hermes on Saturday afternoon. Bar one Lisa Jacob reverse and two corners, Helen Stevenson was a bystander as the game played out largely in the UCD defensive 25 as the dribbling skills of Emma Smyth and Nikki Evans and quick midfield interplay saw them camped high up the field.
The concern may be for Mick McKinnon that they could not fashion more clear chances while Megan Tennant-Humphreys had a top class game at the heart of the defence. Indeed, after 12 minutes of incessant pressure but no major shots, Jacob went on a fine solo run to crash just wide.
She won a corner too to draw Stevenson's only touch before Jean McDonnell broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, reversing home from eight yards after Evans had created the space with a dash down the left baseline.
And McDonnell was central to the second goal, too, seven minutes after the break. She looked to have been guided down a blind alley down the left wing only to check out and bash across goal where Cecelia Joyce had a simple tap-in at the far post.
A couple of corner chances were comfortably defended and a number of goalmouth scrambles went incomplete as Railway were always in control to take a three-point lead, albeit with an extra game played, into Saturday's tie at St Andrew's.

Railway face student tester tonight
The Park Avenue side dismissed the students in the Jacqui Potter Cup in some style back in January but, with European concerns on the horizon in late May, this represents one of just a handful of chances to test themselves in a competitive environment.
Whatever happens, Saturday’s tie with Hermes at St Andrew’s looks set to be a battle royale with the final destination of the title certain to be a far clearer picture.
Women’s Division One:
(Tonight) UCD vs Railway Union, 6.45pm, Belfield
(Saturday) Hermes vs Railway Union, TBC, St Andrew’s; Pembroke vs Loreto, 11.30am, Serpentine Avenue; UCD vs Old Alex, TBC, Belfield

The Hook to roll out new developments
First of all, due to a high volume of requests in the last month, a dedicated photo sales site capable of producing high quality prints delivered to your door is in the pipeline featuring the work of the Irish Hockey Photographers.
Also at an embryonic stage, a results service for the schoolboy leagues is also being prepared for the 2010/11 season which, if successful, could extend to the rest of the Leinster leagues. The final addition will be a more searchable and user friendly version of The Hook' main site for next year.
The Hook is committed to remaining a free service but these new initiatives take a decent amount of time and effort, as well as a cash outlay which is currently beyond the means of the current advertising income and so, if you feel like donating to help push these developments forward, click on the 'Donate' button.
Also, if you have any ideas, suggestions or requests on how to improve coverage, please email me on stevie_findlats@yahoo.com
Wishing you all a pleasant Easter weekend

Women's Leinster league divisional wrap
Newbridge celebrated their 15th season in existence when they claimed division four in the final week of the season, pipping Kildare rivals Naas. A draw at home with Botanic on the penultimate weekend of the season had opened the door for their Caragh Road rivals who were three points back with a game in hand.
Glenanne II, however, did Newbridge a favour as they earned a point from a dramatic, midweek 4-4 draw against Naas, to aid their bid to avoid relegation. It left Newbridge needing just a point to claim the title on the final which they obtained with a 2-2 result at Botanic. Naas fell 1-0 to Railway Union III but maintained the promotion place, nonetheless.
Division Seven:
Hermes III held their nerve on the final day of the season to take division seven from the hands of Suttonians II after a thrilling title race with Pembroke VI and Railway Union IV all in the mix all the way.
Hermes shared the lead with Pembroke on the final morning of the season but an extra league win in the campaign meant that any victory would see them crowned league champions and they obliged with a 2-1 success against Botanic II.
Pembroke fell out of the running with a 2-1 setback in Tullamore while Suttonians took the promotion place as they beat Railway 1-0 in Park Avenue.
Division Eleven:
Division 11 remains the one division yet to be fully confirmed as Mullingar and North Kildare III duke it out for the ultimate honour having both secured the two promotion places. Kildare hold the advantage, completing their campaign on 35 points from their 16 games. The Westmeath side lie three points back with a game to play at Naas III. A win would see the sides deadlocked on the same points tally.
Division 12:
Railway Union VI profited from Monkstown’s quick elevation after a couple of weeks of the season to storm their way to the division 12 title, a league reduced to eight teams. They took the title on March 20 with a series of fixtures remaining when a 3-0 win over Diocesan IV coupled with Weston III’s slip at Dalkey II handed them an unassailable four point lead which they held on the final day of the season, capping the campaign with an impressive 5-0 win.
Division 14:
With up to five teams possibly in line for promotion due to league restrucuting, Division 14 was particularly competitive with Skerries IV ultimately lasting the pace the best, ending the 12 game season as the only unbeaten side.
They held off the Grandt Aston’s newly former Monkstown II team and another newcomer, Avoca IV. Mullingar II have claimed fourth for their own with Corinthian VI in fifth place.

History making Swords slice through Division Five
Indeed, the club fielded three times for the first time in its history with the top two sides earning promotion. The firsts, coached by Adrian Henchy in his second year, had a remarkable season, suffering only one defeat – in the cup to YMCA – ending with an impressive goal difference, aided by Stephanie Jones’ work between the posts.
Cerrie Byrne captained the side while the defence was marshalled by player of the year Fiona Walshe who also weighed in with plenty of corner goals.
Leann Wood conducted affairs in midfield while Sorcha Murtagh was named the club’s most improved player. The goal;s were shared around between Siobhan McKittrick with Marion O’Brien, Rachel Jones, Aisling Corby all netting, with Brede Orohoe the creator-in-chief down the right flank.
Henchy said of their achievement: “it was a massive squad effort, not just this season but over a few seasons with every player making a vital contribution which led to this, going unbeaten which was phenomenal. All the players worked so hard and showed great hunger in every game and with this squad there’s no reason we can’t challenge in division four next season.”

Pembroke bow out to efficient Germans
Pembroke 0 Rot-Weiss Koln 3 (Philipp Zeller, Benji Wess, Christopher Zeller)
When a goalkeeper receives a man-of-the-match award in a 3-0 loss, it gives a measure of a game’s flow. David Harte pulled off in excess of 15 top drawer saves but Pembroke were always on the back foot against one the EHL favourites, Rot-Weiss Koln, and bow out of the competition at the KO16 stage.
In stereotypically German fashion, they showed a ruthless efficiency limiting the Irish champions to just a single shot – a Mick O’Connor reverse-stick effort – as they always looked in control of the fixture, though they never truly cut loose.
Tournament top scorer Christopher Zeller was left frustrated by Harte, five of his drag-flicks and two clear shots bounced away by the towering net-minder and, while he did net a 68th minute penalty stroke, his marshalling was a cause for positivity with Ronan Gormley a top performer.
Indeed, Pembroke started in lively enough fashion. Justin Sherriff created the first corner penetration while Craig Fulton was lively down the right wing for two further circle incursions.
But Koln were masterful in defending the feet as pull-backs found their way to red sticks.
They were content to play half-court, handing Pembroke plenty of ball inside their own territory before pouncing from their first corner when Benji Wess’ clever touch caught Conor Harte flat-footed.
Christopher Zeller’s piledriver was kept out, as was the rebound but a clever lay-back to Philipp Zeller in the third phase was drilled home from the pusher-out zone, as the Pembroke defensive unit scrambled.
Again, Koln sat back and awaited their prey to leave their comfort zone. It created a few half-openings; Alan Sothern’s clever lay-off just eluding Paddy Conlon while O’Connor’s trademark reverse whizzed through a dangerous area but with no one was available to slide in.
Real goal-mouth panic, though, was confined to the Dubliner’s circle. Tibor Weissenborn’s baseline run was almost calamitously turned goalward by a combination of Fulton’s foot and stick, Constantin Axer deflected inches wide from Paul Kupper’s bash and Adam Pritchard cleared one slow-roller off the line to keep the score to 1-0 at the big break with the heaven’s opening.
And Koln grabbed the insurance goal a four minutes into the second half when Benji Wess did brilliantly to slide in ahead of Tim Lewis to a loose ball after Jan-Marco Montag wreaked havoc down the right flank.
The younger Wess brother reacted fastest to a popped ball down the end-line to sweep high past the emerging David Harte from close to the baseline.
A Christopher Zeller drive and strike could have sealed the tie a minute later as could his next corner strike. Each time, though, Harte was equal to it as the Germans truly turned the screw.
He also picked off a Montag drag and excellent pair of saves at the edge of the circle as, first, Benji Wess and then Weissenborn ran free in the circle.
A couple more corner saves greeted his announcement as player-of-the-match before Pembroke had a shout for a corner turned away along with a video referral as no captain’s armband was currently on the pitch.
And in the aftermath of those complaints, Koln used their referral to get a corner upgraded to a penalty stroke in the subsequent break-out which Christopher Zeller duly converted.
Pembroke: David Harte, Tim Lewis, Alan Giles, Craig Fulton, Ronan Gormley, Maurice Elliott, Andy McConnell, Justin Sherriff, Adam Pritchard, Alan Sothern
Subs: Gordon Elliott, Paddy Conlon, Mick O’Connor, Patrick Good, Ken Treacy
Rot-Weiss Koln: Max Weinhold, Timo Wess, Benjamin Wess, Christopher Zeller, Tobias Hauke, Jan-Marco Montag, Philipp Zeller, Tibor Weissenborn, Paul Kupper, Constantin Axer, Philipp Brandess
Subs: Marcel Meurer, Martin Chorus, Fabian Bauwens, Hendrik Scharzer, Florentin von Schmidt
Umpires: Andy Mair, Will Drury

Avoca trio on course for triple glory
The 2s, coached by George Roberts and captained Katherine Lyall, claimed promotion for the second year in-a-row following a closely fought battle with fellow promoted side, Swords II.
They ended with a perfect home record and conceded only five goals in the league campaign, the defense marshalled by Sarah Mc Donagh and Chloe Usher proving hard to crack.
Paula Anderton was in rich scoring form but the key to the wins was no less than 14 members of the squad contributing to the scoring. They remain on course for a double, facing Three Rock Ladies IV in the division 9/10 cup final on April 10.
The third team, co-captained by Sheena Chapple and Kate O'Callaghan, clinched a very competitive Division 13 late on, thanks to wins over their nearest rivals YMCA II and Old Alex VI.
The team’s scoring prowess came from experienced striker Eithne Robinson leading the way with eight goals, followed closely by Niamh Gaughan and Hilary Lennon. YM II took second place in the final table, two points off the pace.
The fourths – introduced last September following a growth in player numbers – also look to be moving up with as many as five sides possibly stepping up to division 13 in league restructuring.
They are currently in third with a game on April 10 still to play. The huge influx of new players last september helped to strengthen the 3rds team and create a 4ths team so we are hoping for more of the same next September.

Muckross III hold twin division nine threat at bay
However, an incredible 6-6 tie with Old Alex and a 0-0 draw with Clontarf opened the door for their rivals with only three points covering the top sides going into the final month of the season.
But when the Donnybrook side picked off the points against the students and Railway lost out at Diocesan on March 6 the battle took its inexorable swing, compounded by three more wins, capped off by a 10-0 win over Guinness II in which centre-forward Lisa Shine scored four times to seal the silverware.
UCD and Railway meet next Monday to decide the promotion place with the students needing just a point to move up.

Monkstown ladies moving on up
Even with the jump and a backlog of fixtures, the side coached by Chris Beere and captained by Sarah Lovett took the title as early as February with an excellent final goal tally of +61.
Newcomer Laura Maher scored 22 of those goals with Suzie Murray close behind, grabbing 13 goals.
The club also had a successful run in the Irish Hockey Challenge, reaching the semi finals but losing against a tough YMCA side, who went on to win the title for the second year in a row.
This league win makes it 11 successive promotions for the Monkstown ladies moniker, the former incarnation earning nine league promotions in-a-row before rebranding as Glenageary HC at the time of the move to Rathdown by the men.
By virtue of their jump in leagues, though, the club was unable to contest the division 7/8 cup.
Phoenix Park, meanwhile, secured their fourth promotion in five years last Monday night with a 2-1 win over Corinthian IV at St Columba's College.
They took the spot ahead of Weston II by the narrowest possible margins, with games won the decider after both ended the campaign on 31 points. Alva Mulloy got the vital goals on Monday after Corinthian had capitalised on a defensive error to take the lead.Mulloy, working from centre-midfield, levelled after a weaving run to blast home. Goalkeeper Yvonne McEneff kept her side in the hunt before Mulloy struck again following a series of short corners.

YMCA women in line for second treble
As a result, the club remains on course for a third successive treble following last year’s Irish Hockey Challenge, league and cup success as they face Clontarf on April 10 in the division 5/6 decider.
The club is currently in the midst of a two-year unbeaten run, adding this league success to their Challenge success in March. It’s very much a family affair with sisters Tara,Sian and Aimee Powderly lining out, father Robin managing and brother Will holding the coach’s clipboard.
Powered by midfield boss Helen Keane, Lynn Jenkinson – daughter of former Irish international, Tom – at sweeper and captained by Emily Bradshaw (pictured, receiving the IHC crown), they continue their meteoric rise since forming four years ago.
Muckross II take the second promotion place following the defeat of Newbridge in midweek by the Y.

Maguire strikes for Leuven
Phelie Maguire struck in the final minute of KHC Leuven's EHL's KO16 tie with Beeston, rounding George Pinner to fire home, copper-fastening a 3-1 win over England's Beeston. It was the former Three Rock man's fourth goal of the competition as the Belgian club now await the winner of East Grinstead and Amsterdam in Sunday's KO8 tie.
Mitch Darling also lined out but was sin-binned in the 34th minute with Leuven 1-0 down. However, three second half goals turned the game on its head with Darling picking up the assists for the second and third goals.
In other Irish involvement, Chris Cargo was one of Reading's best performers against Polo de Barcelona though they became the second English club to bow out of the competition inside a two hour period, losing 2-1. Ulster man Warren McCully is on the umpire's roster.

Pembroke enter new EHL dimension
Draws do not much tougher than the KO16 tie with Rot-Weiss Koln, who even on debut were the master performers in round one of the competition, smashing Italy's Club Bra before Christopher Zeller's drag-flicks dismantled another tournament favourite, HC Egara.
But Pembroke’s under-stated celebrations following their Leinster league and Mills Cup wins in the last few weeks suggests that this is very much the level they wish to test themselves at.
Fulton told the Hook in the wake of the 2-0 win over Three Rock, the long gap between the group phases and this knock-out fixture have made it a tough season to manage.
“The complexity of this season has been with the Irish guys going away in November, then trying to fit in three fixtures and to not affect our EHL, we’ve always had more than one thing on the go and have had to peak twice in one season. Obviously, that’s something we’ve managed to do with a good squad so far.”
Three trophies since the turn of the year suggest it is coming into shape at the right time and with two weeks of focussed training in the tank, the coach will hope to pull together the performance of the season for what is a huge challenge.
Speaking to the Irish Times this week, he said of the Koln proposition: “The tempo of this match will be higher certainly. We have to manage that and then maybe we can back ourselves to get into it. We are in the top 16 in Europe at this stage so it is the pinnacle in terms of European competition and it is a fantastic challenge for us.”
Pembroke reached the KO16 courtesy of a stunning 4-2 win over Kelburne in the autumn in Barcelona courtesy of Alan Sothern’s first quarter hat-trick – including the fastest goal ever in EHL competition.
They followed with a purely academic loss to Rotterdam – another of the tournament’s front-runners – to take the runners-up spot and get thrown into the lion’s den in the draw.
Koln are the new glamour side in Germany rising from relative obscurity since the arrival to the club of Zeller brothers Christopher and Philipp from a stint with Bloemendaal.
A year on and they had claimed the German title with several other Olympic gold medalists in tow such as Benjamin and Timo Wess, Tibor Weissenborn, Tobias Hauke, Jan-Marco Montag and goalkeeper Max Weinhold.
It makes for a truly daunting task. The Zeller brothers said this week, in an EHL interview, they have full respect for ‘the Wanderers’, stating the tie is a trip into the unknown.
But if there is any latent thoughts of this being an easy fixture for the Germans, Irish keeper David Harte is hoping his side to capitalise.
He told Southern Fried: “We saw them in round one of the EHL and it’s clear to see they like very fast free flowing, counter attack hockey but this brings weaknesses with their game too.
“We are not fearing them by any means but they must and will be respected if we are to seriously compete.
“We are the underdogs, so much that others are already talking about who Köln play in the quarter-finals, and we will hope to use this to our advantage and take our chances when they fall to us. In a one-off game like this, especially in the EHL, anything is possible.”
* Action gets underway at 4pm Irish time. You can watch the match live online at www.ehlhockey.tv while Eurosport 2 is broadcasting the majority of this weekend’s matches over the weekend. Fancy a flutter, bwin has a sports book open on all the EHL fixtures this weekend.

Muckross and Our Lady's div three stars
Coached by Gordon Watkins, they managed to hold off the intentions of Our Lady’s to take the title with a game to spare with November’s 2-1 win over the Terenure club the vital result. Thereafter, the top two matched each other virtually result for result, tying 1-1 in a key tie at the start of March.
For the Teresian-based school, it proved the inspiration for the club for whom the seconds and thirds have also breached the top two in their division.
Our Lady’s, captained by Danielle Byrne and coached by Victor Shaw, took the second promotion spot courtesy of some incredible shooting from Sinead Kelly who struck a massive 44 goals this season from the side’s 59 in all competitions.
* If you have any info on how your club teams from women's divisions four to fourteen fared, please email stevie_findlats@yahoo.com. I will be putting together a round-up of the winners and promotion-winning teams on the site in the next three days but the extent of coverage depends on how much info is contributed.
