Muckross III, coached by Irish hockey legend Helen Buckley (pictured), took initial control of division 9 from the mid-point of the season in December thanks to crucial wins over UCD IV and Railway Union V, their main rivals in a three-horse race.
However, an incredible 6-6 tie with Old Alex and a 0-0 draw with Clontarf opened the door for their rivals with only three points covering the top sides going into the final month of the season.
But when the Donnybrook side picked off the points against the students and Railway lost out at Diocesan on March 6 the battle took its inexorable swing, compounded by three more wins, capped off by a 10-0 win over Guinness II in which centre-forward Lisa Shine scored four times to seal the silverware.
UCD and Railway meet next Monday to decide the promotion place with the students needing just a point to move up.
