Railway Cup final:
Monkstown 2 (Simon Groves, Simon Allen) Railway Union 1 (Peter English)
Monkstown II made it a weekend to remember for many a year as, despite a hard night’s celebrations after the Irish Junior Cup, they added the Railway Cup to their trophy cabinet with hard-fought win over Railway Union II at Serpentine Avenue on Sunday.
With division three still very much up for grabs, with four sides still in contention, a famous treble could be on the cards for the Rathdown outfit after a memorable weekend’s work for the side coached by Alun Evans.
Railway held sway in the first half with Craig Ellis making one cracking save from an Owen Butler snap shot and Henry Griffin going very close too.
Evans, though, made a few changes at half time which paid dividends as Simon Groves deflected in a Richard Sykes crash ball and Simon Allen made it two from the penalty spot after a Sykes drag-flick hit a Railway foot on the line.
Peter English’s drag-flick pulled one back and the Park Avenue camped around the Town circle for the final five minutes but the sky-blues stood firm to continue their incredible season.
