Three weeks since completing a hectic international schedule, Paul Revington (pictured in discussion with manager Peter Jackson) has already begun formulating plans for the upcoming World Cup qualifier and, indeed, the much longer term future for the senior men’s team.
Stating his ambition to “create more depth around the senior Ireland men’s team” he has named a 35 man central training panel, 12 players as part of the Ireland A panel and a further 19 as potential A squad members of the future.
The aim of increasing the squads is to help assist the core players while creating a healthy competitive spirit.
Speaking about the central panel, Rveington said: “Our regional training programme through September and October aims to create such an environment for our elite players to improve themselves.
“While the 22 players selected between Champions Challenge II and ENT in Wrexham currently sit in prime position for selection, there will be opportunities for players to force their way into the team through consistency of performance. The training panel will be reviewed again in 2010 after conclusion of the WCQ."
On the A panel, he added: “The purpose is to establish a strength and conditioning base for these players at a critical developmental age, to introduce these players to important senior Irish team playing principles, and develop a 10 month programme that works toward an end goal for these players to be assessed by the end of July 2010.
"The peripheral group of players aged 16-20 we believe has the potential to force their way into the Ireland A Squad. The A Squad is by no means a closed squad, and this peripheral group will reward consistent performer."

Where is Stephen O'Keeffe?
This is hilarious, the pride of getting a cap is gone out the window!
'tarf are top of the league. The bullring is the new home of hockey.
explain that last comment? do you have caps, and if so what is this pride your talking about, or are you just a begruger.
More to the point, where is David Robinson??
To 12:43 - apologies, that was a typo, he's in the Ireland A panel. I've added him in there now.
The comment is more related to the Ireland A squad of whom all the players got caps last year. Majority of those players wouldnt be able to compete at an international level.
Michael Maguire??Still??Undefendable decision. And Pritchard?Other than that i think the full training panel is about right. What's the deal with so many Ulster players in the A and 'future A' squad members? With Leinster leading the way in schools and senior mens league hockey this seems a bit bizarre.Whole selection process still seems very shady.
is it april 1st?
eh? so shady that he puts together a massive big list of players which he mails out to all the clubs (this was sent to my clubs, too) with explanations of how and why he arrived at these selections? catch yourself on.
also, Cookstown were by the far the best schools team this year, Bann were not too far off. Ulster won the U-18 interpros too...
As a Leinster man, I know the top clubs are leading the way but getting complacent about the underage set-up is not a good idea at all.
as for the two guys mentioned, maybe these players aren't your favourites but to say its 'undefendable' is a bit rich. Maguire and Pritchard did well in the Celtic Cup in a side that performed above expectations against established international sides so why jettison them?
12.56 ... i presume you are referring to the celtic cup where the Ireland A players got caps....it was a senior international tournament which they won so i believe those caps were well deserved....the pride of an irish cap is not gone out the window....it just goes to show the strength and depth of the mens' squad at the moment
very well said
When all of the people commenting understand what Revs and Ned are looking for both now and in the future you can comment.
This is a wide selection of players which can be added to if a player performs well at club or inter-pro level and guess what they can also be dropped from the various groups if they do not perform. This is just a starting point not and end, and having seen what these two guys have done in such a short space of time I feel that this is a very positive step by them for the good of Ireland.
I'd still be pretty proud if I got a cap!
I'd probably tell my mum straight away.
It seems like if you havn't played for Ireland at a under age level you won't ever be considered.....
Do you think Stephen O'Keffe is a better keeper then the 4 named?
Well said Bango
Can i just ask, what if you're not in any of these panels and perform outstandingly throughout the season? But you dont play for a Pembroke or a Glenanne and you have no one putting you forward? How on earth are you meant to break in?Word of mouth and recommendations seem to play a big role in selection.
O'Keeffe is certainly interesting for the future. Very talented and a top athlete.
Stephen O'Keefe should definetly be considered as well as Mark English from Railway.Had a very good U21 inter-pros this year scoring a spectacular goal as well agaisnt Munster..

your more likely to be spoted in a big club like pembrouke or glenanne as you are constintly rplaying in high profile finals and matchs. Also in the hole list glenanne have 5 players mentioned a much lower contingent then other clubs that arn't getting to IHL finals etc
Philip Browne and Stephen Cole should def be in "A' squad also. Both better than some of the players in there and did very well at U18 Europeans
sep 4, 1.16
Mike Maguire has been excellent for Rovers the last few years, player of the year when they won everything, and does it in the big games. Just try and play against him, he's a nightmare to mark. Great personality to have around as well.
C of I player

Have no issues with this comment at all only please back up your statement by saying WHO they are better than. Remember that Browne isnt a regular yet in the Bann team and performances at Ireland A really need to be based on 1st XI as well as international ( albeit Junior ages ) Agree that Cole is unlucky but who is he better than thats there? Out of that age group also felt Dowds has played Premier for 2 season and deserved a shout as did Forbes but perhaps that is biased as a Bann man. Well done to all who are even mentioned on squads

If your an international coach you want the absolute best players available and will look at anyone who fits the bill. Lets give the coaches credit, lads. Top performances from the men (consistently) and the women (when it really mattered) this summer, both with squads aimed for the Olympics in 2012, hence some retirments which could have added to short term results, but the experience is better spent with the younger players.
As an aside, was at the Hooked conference yesterday in UCD which, for 60 quid, got me 8 hours coaching in the company of Revs, Muller, Passmore and others. Somehow, I dont see Trappatoni doing somthing similar! Good on the IHA, heading in the right direction..
how come pembroke have considerably more in these squads than glenanne? it appears the two are on the same level as all games last season ended in a draw bar one i think. they are clearly leading the way for Irish hockey but it appears pembroke have most of their team in these squads however it is not the case for glenanne.
yes the results are alike between the two but it's not individual players that make a great team.Glens individuals on paper are nowhere near as talented as the big names of Pembroke bar their three internationals, Steve, Graham and Joe. However, the individuals they do have seem to gel extremely well together and produce results that get them to finals. It's not as if their players aren't seen week in week out by an Irish coach, surely Arul would have a say if he felt that there were some of his players being overlooked.
Look who the coaches for Glenanne and Pembroke are and who the assistant irish coaches are!!!!
no matter what they say having the irish assistant coaches involved at club level simply isn't right. regardless of what their intentions are they are obviously going to have different opinions about their own players as they see them far more regularily than other squad members and so of course they are going to have a biased view. don't blame the clubs for hiring them though look where its gotten them.
in pembrokes case was craig fulton not the pembroke coach before he became the irish assistant coach?yes.in both cases, glens and pembroke, every one of the players selected are worthy, after all,the end decision on selections rests with revington.if it were with ned and arul then surely youd have jonny goulding and wiggy playing for ireland!wise up
Here here, why do you think Andy McC joined Pembroke?Revs=higher chance of him getting in the Irish squad.Stu Loughrey=is in because he plays for Pembroke.Rake of young talented players just as good if not better but play for clubs other than Pembroke/Glenanne.Dont think anyone can really disagree with this.
Andy McC joined pembroke because they are the most professional outfit in Irish hockey by a mile from what i've seen.Who are these other players that are better than the likes of Loughrey?name some names, because i certainly cannot think of any out there.
7.12om, while I may agree with some of what you say, I can see millions of reasons why people would disagree with you!
Dowds is still under 18 next year
