Corinthian edge seven goal thriller

Men's Division One
Monkstown 3 (Gareth Watkins 3) Corinthian 4 (Davy Carson 2, Darren Kimfley, Rowland Rixon-Fuller)
On a day when South African Matt Fairweather made his debut for the Town and Darren Kimfley returned to Corinthian's ranks, it was the more established African player in Ireland, Rowland Rixon-Fuller from Zimbabwe who was the game-breaker. Gareth Watkins hat-trick had tied the game up at 3-3 with seven minutes to go. It had earlier been tied at 2-2 with the reds scoring a penalty corner on the half-time hooter.

Fingal 0 TRR 1 (Garry Ringwood ps)
Three Rock keep their 100pc record in tact by scraping to a 1-0 win at ALSAA. Garry Ringwood's penalty stroke was the difference between the sides in a game where Sven Galjaardt made his debut after injury had previously curtailed his involvement.

Railway Union 2 (Karl Chapple, Peter English) Clontarf 0
Two corner goals from Railway Union bagged three home points at Park Avenue with Karl Chapple scoring for the first time since his summer move from Avoca from a corner rebound. Peter English netted a drag-flick to make it 2-0 and secure the points. Clontarf remain without a point to date.

UCD 1 (Tim Hill) YMCA 3 (Mikey Fry, David Robinson, Andy Walker)
YM picked up their first win of the league campaign as they recovered from an early set-back to win 3-1. UCD took the lead from a neat corner move, switching left before angling a pass to the right post for a deflection. But Mikey Fry chipped over Ross Gribben from close range to level and David Robinson's excellent solo run and shot made it 2-1 by the break. Andy Walker struck soon after the break to kill off a bit of the bite in the game as YM held the ball reasonably well from then on after a very tight first half scrap.

Rovers played some nice hockey today, didnt really looked threatened by fingal. All they need to do now is keep up the high intensity and get a few more shots on goal. A good squad irrespective of what has been said on this website

Watched Corinthian v Monkstown game. Good game. Coley looked good again. Growing in stature in the middle of the park all the time. They need another goal scorer. Can't be depending on Watkins to score all their goals.

Good start for Railway.Keep it up lads!

Are Corinthian good enough to break into the top two?

Anonymous said...

They play Glenanne next week so we will find out. Good time to be playing Glenanne I reckon though some might say they may have a point to prove after the weekend

Playing against top sides like Uhlenhorst and Grunwald was an eye-opener for Glenanne... Corinthian might just feel the blacklash!!

Corinthian have a job to finish 3rd or 4th never mind top 2 --any team that goes to railway and finishes 1-1 cannot have realistic aspirations for top 2--Glens are well ahead of corinthians on paper and on pitch --saturday will confirm that . Glens Midfield will dominate -- Railway will not take home points from Pemb/Glens/TRR/Monks/Fingal and even YM

last season they put it up too rovers pembroke chc.

Muktar Ahmed who used to play for Suttonians is now playing for Clontarf. Good signing

Clontarf were very unlucky to lose to Railway on saturday, they dominated the game but O'Keefe in goal for Railway had a stormer.
and yep Mukthar was playing for Clontarf.
If Clontarf play like that every week they will take points off of teams

It was suggested to me last saturday (and confirmed by an umpire) that if player taking a free hit inside the 22m line touches the ball 1 metre then a player from the same team can then crash it into the circle. My belief was that it is the ball that must move 5 yards before it could be hit into the circle. Anyone care to clarify

I asked Henrik Ehlers - one of the world's top umpires - this one the other day, especially after Glenanne tried it in the EHL.

He said it is perfectly legal. The problem with the Glens one in their game, though, was the umpire was not convinced the ball moved a metre but otherwise would have been ok.

ru WILL take home points from ym, town, rovers and fingal!

great. even more confusion for the branch umpires to get their head around.

Is there any way of getting absolute clarity on this from the IHA or Leinster branch as currently everything that goes into the circle that has not gone 5 metres is being blown up.

This is really important, especially in underage games or lower divisions where you frequently have inadequate/underqualified or novice umpires, especially where teams provide their own.

there was also game in Div 4 a couple of weeks ago where one umpire gave a goal that was hit outside the circle and deflected in off a defenders stick (EHL own goal rule?, despite protests from the players and the other umpire

Why is this exception to the 5m distance ruling allowed. If the rule states it must move 5m before being hit in then why is this different. This is just going to confuse umpires and players even more!!!!

Anonymous said...

The rule is that if 2 players from the same team touch the ball before it enters the circle then it only has to move 1 metre.

However, if only one player from the same team touches the ball before it enters the circle then it must go five metres.

Remember that everyone has to be 5 metres away from the ball anyway as well.

What Glens tried to do is perfectly legal but the umpire blew it for it not moving a yard.

I'm confused about the comments on free hits inside the 23m line. I thought the ball had to travel 5m before it was played into the circle. Are there different rules for EHL?

Anonymous said...

As previously said, the rule clearly states that the ball must travel 5m or be touched by a second player before entering the circle.

This can be either a player from your own team
or from the opposition. E.g a pass is made to a player on your team, the ball deflects off the defending teams player and enters the circles after less than 5m. Perfectly acceptable.

Umpires so far have been awarding frees out, when the ball is crashed into the circle from an unaware player. Sure this fine but wait until the ball crosses the circle line! As it may take an unfortunate deflection off a defenders stick or foot and then continue on it's way into the circle. This is extremely frustrating.

The rule is that for attacking free hits in the 23m a second player (either team) apart from the free taker must touch the ball before it goes into the circle.

The rule for the ball having to move a metre when a free hit is passed to a player on the same team has not gone so the ball still has to move a metre before someone touches it on the attacking team.

The new ruling that all players have to be 5 metres away for free its in the 23 is just an extention of the all players have to be 5 metres for free ins within 5metres of the circle, so nothing difficult there.

The confusion has only come from the self pass, because players can take a free to themselves an additional rule had to be brought in, this is the "ball must move 5 metres" rule, this 5 metres can be in any direction i.e. moving 2.5 metres right and then 2.5 metres left the ball will be in the same spot but would be allowed to be hit into the circle as it has travelled 5 metres in total (this was decided at the associated FIH Umpires Briefing)

hope that helps

Thanks for the clarifications, as I too thought the 5m rule was a "blanket" rule throughout the 23m area!

The "own goal" rule only applies to EHL and IHL competitions.

From my understanding of the above then is this correct?

The ball must move 5 metres before being played into the circle if
a) the ball has been played as an autopass to yourself
b) if no other player touches the ball

However, apparently the ball can be played into the circle more quickly under the following

a) if another player from the same team touches the ball, in which case the ball must have moved at least 1 metre before the other player tocuhes the ball.

Can it then be played directly into the circle? (Even though it has not moved 5 metres?)

Anonymous said...

To be frank...

What a joke. The five yard rule is a good one and it should remain.

Rolling the ball a metre then hitting a moving ball is more dangerous than hitting a stationary ball.

The rule was created to take away from the dangerous situation not make it worse.

Can a player on the same team stand one metre away from a free in in the 25?

Anonymous said...

So, just to be perfectly clear (as mud). There are effectively two rules governing the free within the 23m area.

1. If a player autopasses to himself the ball must travel 5 metres before entering the circle.

2. If it's a (old fashioned) deadball situation then the ball need only travel a metre before any other player can pass the directly into the circle. (given that he must be five metres away at the time the hit is taken)

I really don't mean to be pedantic but can a player take a self pass move half a meter and pass back half a metre to one of his own players who can them crash it into the circle. (i.e. The ball has travelled a metre)

There clearly needs to be some direction on this as it only gets more complicated the more it's discussed.

10.25am

A player can not stand a metre away from another player who his taking a hit inside 23m. That is the point.

If the ball is tipped a yard one way the other player still has to move 4 metres before he will get to it so negating any kind of real advantage.

Anonymous said...

No all players must be 5 metres away from the ball inside the 25 so it is not possible to pass it one metre to a player on your team and let him hit it into the circle.

Anonymous said...

Given the Leinster umpires take on the situation and agreeing that everyone must be 5 metres from the hit, if the freetaker moves the ball a metre towards one of his own team (and away from opponents)then there is quite obviously an advantage and the ball can be hit direct into the circle

According to the umpire ?????

Queso said...

No, there's no direct advantage as an opponent can also be standing side-by-side 5m away from the free hit and compete directly for the ball once it's put into play

Anonymous said...

i think how it could work is that if there was some one 5m behind the person taking the free and the free taker touches it a metre, the player behind could rush in and shell it at the D. that way the ball will only have traveled the 1m but because another team mate touched it it can do direct into the circle. thats my interpretation anyway
