Women's Division One: Week Twelve results

Trinity 1 (Lucy Small) Loreto 2 (Ali Meeke, Eilis Smith)
Trinity were left heartbroken as they were denied a point by a last gasp Eilis Smith goal for Loreto at Santry. The Beaufort side, already without four internationals, were shorn of Niamh Small too as she got a late call-up to the Irish Saturday squad for their tie with Canada, giving the likes of Smith and Ali Meeke a chance to shine.

Former Corinthian Meeke opened the scoring very early on, latching on to Rachel Keegan's ball to steer home with a deflection on her reverse.

Lucy Small levelled before half-time, sweeping the ball in on her reverse. Into the second half, knowing his side needs more than just draws to get off bottom spot, David Bane encouraged his Trinity-side to go for the win but his side were stung late on. Nikki Keegan's run created the chance for Smith to score and take the win which reduces Railway's lead to just four points.

Pembroke 5 (Aoife O'Gorman, Emily MacNicholas, Louisa Moore, Shona Doyle, Karen Hales) Corinthian 1 (Susie Geoffroy)
Pembroke moved into a tie for third spot with Hermes thanks to a comfortable win over Corinthian at Serpentine Avenue in the only other game to survive the elements.

The goals were spread around with regular defenders Aoife O'Gorman, Karen Hales and Emily MacNicholas joining strikers Louisa Moore and Shona Doyle on the scoring list. Susie Geoffroy got the response for the reds.

Old Alex ABANDONED Hermes
Hermes turned on the style amid the foul weather to build up a 5-1 lead before the wind and rain proved too much and the game was abndoned at Alex with 17 minutes remaining. Hermes led thanks to goals from Nikki Evans (three), Anna O'Flanagan and Jenny Burke.

Former Hermes player Liane Costello got the response for Alex which made the game 2-1 at half-time.

It now looks like the game will have to be replayed from scratch as per Leinster branch rules within 22 days.

Railway Union OFF Glenanne; UCD OFF Bray
The Railway-Glenanne game got as far as the warm-up before the game was called off with the goals being blown backwards and, as such, will need to be played within the next three weeks.

The same goes for UCD who had similar problems up in Belfield.

Hermes looked on fire i reckon it would have been 7 if the game continued.. bit of wind and rain unbelievable all the mens games were played !!!

finish the 17 minutes would be the fairest rule..

apparently both teams and umpires have agreed to play the last 19 on Mon night. Will the leinster branch allow it?

Does anyone know the UCD Bray result? CHC lost 5-1 to Pembroke.

Playing the 17 minutes is obviously the fairest thing to do.... However, I very much doubt that this can happen... As far as I'm aware, lots of games have been abandoned recently (IHL, Mens Leinster etc.) and I think they have all been restarted!! Can't see the Branch finally seeing sense all of a sudden????

the whole match needs to be replayed not just the 17mins. this happened before and the whole game had to be replayed.Hope the branch remembers this.

Good point about the mens games, the weather must have been better in their grounds. You could not play hockey in that wind and rain.
The goals where moving in some grounds and you could not ensure players saftey. The men must be blind or just don't care about players saftey

I recall Railway playing Trinity about 3 seasons ago and Railway were up 4 goals and the pitch was very icy so the game was abandoned. Trinity then had to come to Railway and play the 70 minutes again.

Playing the 18 minutes on monday night seems the sensible & Fair approach thereby avoiding any impact on weekend etc etc.. If all parties have already come to this decision nothing for the leinster branch to decide upon.. !

the hermes v alex match was a great display by hermes, but as we had been warned - the bad weather really struck badly - the weather got worse as the match went on and correct me if Im wrong but surly player safety is far more important than trying to continue the game, when the goals were being blown across the pitch, I know this weather was really unusal, but the new gaols are way too light, maybe the clubs.schools should consider using weights or sandbags to weigh them down

In relation to the dreadful weather we had on saturday, I was at a cup match and the game was due to start at 1.15 - before the game started the goals were being blown around, one umpire said it was unsafe the other shouted the loudest and the first umpire not being totally sure of her rights gave in, but when the first goal went in and it was allowed the goal was falling backwards and the keeper was watching the goal and the goal was allowed - so the home side then decided to put two people behind the goal to hold it in place, this caused another problem - what happens if we miss??
by the time the match was eventually adbandoned it was 2-2, - when oh when will connon sense prevail - players safety was put at risk for a match!! answer me this if the goal had fallen on a player and caused any injury - big or small and these are only club umpires and not members of the LHUA that have to pay insurance themselves, whose insurance would cover it - club, school or personal insurance??

Surely people realise that some grounds are more exposed than others? It is far more likely to be extremely windy in Alex than say, Pembroke. One is in a lot of open ground, the other is more sheltered.

Guys lets get real here. no one was going to die at old Alex on Saturday. The Goal moved ONCE. while the match was actually suspended , Emma Gray was practically in the in Dug out when a gust of wind moved the goal..

The reason the game was suspended was because one umpire couldnt see , although the other one could ?

In terms of the rules , sure they make them up as they go along, they changed the rules in the cup game earlier this season -its a JOKE ...

alex v hermes - yes the game was suspended due to the awful weather which was sheeting across the pitch and while the teams were off the pitch - which by the way is neither here nor there, the goal moved across the pitch, it was replaced and promtly was blown across to the far sideline - so as for the psychic in the last remark "no one was going to die" no one could call that - not even the member of irish psychics live!!

annadale v cookstown - replay!
hermes v alex - replay..harsh but simple!

Anonymous said...

Not sure it's that 'simple' at all.. The Annadale/Cookstown decision was based on an interpretation of an IHL guideline (inapplicable to leinster competition) to the effect that "rearrangement, when impossible to resume on the same day, indicates the match be rescheduled in its entirety". Rearrangement simply doesn't pose the same problems in terms of logistics/travelling/accommodation etc for Leinster fixtures... The decision also appears to have been based on the fact that the match card had been signed as 'abandoned'. In contrast, it appears that at the end of the Alex/Hermes game both teams and umpires agreed to play the remaining time tonight and nothing at all was signed..

Yeah interesting as i heard Hermes did not sign the match card.. Court of Law me thinks .!!
