Denham names U-21 squad

Niall Denham has named an eye-opening Leinster U-21 squad for this weekend's interprovincial tournament, to be held at Grange Road.

YMCA's Australian-born drag-flicker Jacob Webber - who arrived in Dublin earlier this season - has made his mark with a number of goals in the Leinster senior league. He gets the nod along with German striker Carl Eggert (pictured), who has plied his trade with Corinthian and Wesley College for the last couple of years.

Ten of last year's squad remains. Leinster senior players Richie Shaw and David Robinson retain their places as expected while Ross Murray, Ronan Motyer, Chris Pelow, Geoff Walker, Tim Hill, Karl Smith, Andrew Ward and Richie Pedreschi all come back for another year with the side.

St Andrew's student Stuart Loughrey is not included this time around while YM's Shane O'Donnell joins his sister Hayley up at Grange Road this weekend after she was named in the ladies U-21 side last week.

Leinster U-21 squad:
Christopher Pelow, Carl Eggert, Brian Doherty, Ross Murray (all Corinthian), Emmet Hughes (Fingal), Jonathon Kane (Glenanne), Nick Dee, Andrew Ward (both Monkstown), Tim Hill (TRR), Karl Smith, Ronan Motyer, Stephen O'Keefe (all UCD), Richard Pedreschi, David Robinson, Shane O'Donnell, Jacob Webber, Geoff Walker (all YMCA), Richie Shaw (Glenanne, captain)
Coach: Niall Denham
Manager: Alec Barrett

Interesting selection, it would be interesting to know are the terms of playing in the tournament the same as Seniors, U16 and U18. That is you have to be availble to play for Ireland to be eligable to play in the tournament.
If it is not this is a very strong squad and should do well

This looks to be a very interesting squad.
I was just wondering if the the eligability rules are the same as the Seniors, U18's and U16's which is you have to be available to play for Ireland to take part.

This is a good squad

I stand to be corrected on this but there was a senior interpro competition in Cork where Paul 'Trapper' Armitage and Colin 'Bacchus' Stewart played for Leinster. Caused a bit of a commotion but I can't recall if any rules have changed since then.

who is hughes from fingal?

He moved to Fingal from Kilkenny at the start of the season and has been part of the Fingal 1sts squad since.

I am not sure either but i think it was, as Ulster played Australians in a Ladies Inter-pro and it caused a bit of stir as well.
I have not seen any selected since then.

what do people think the starting 11 will be

Some short corner routine Denham has available, he is spoiled for choice with drag flickers, so it will be interesting to see who he has over the top the majority of the time. Best of luck to them, Ulster side looks impressive too.

I don't see a problem with the selection of the two players who are from abroad. If they are living here and going to school or working here then I don't see anything wrong with that.

They obviously have their Visa's or passports which allow them to be here, so in my books that makes them eligible to play for Ireland.

The only problem would be is if either of them represented their countries at a senior level. As I have heard of cases of players who have represented their countries at an underage level who have then been selected with another country at the same level.

If they are good enough to make the team then good on them! lets not make an issue of it!

who is flicking chris brian or webber????

Didn't Peter Blakeney play in the AHL - Australian Hockey League) for Western Australia last year?

I know its a different governing body, but surely it goes both ways?

Great selection on both the girls and the guys front, the guys looks very reliant on Corithians with 4 players and YM with 5 players. Interesting to see a brother and sister playing in the same year, has this ever happened before

All players selected for Inter-Pros MUST be eligible for Irish selection.

This instruction was clearly stated on instruction received from IHA and was issued to all Branches.

These instructions are still in force and were re-issued and confirmed at start of this season.

Great to see the mens selection for the Under 21's, can only find the ladies 21 squad on the IHA website, can you tell me who is the manager and coach?

Anonymous said...

they need to win corners for these flickers to show there worth!!

great to see the people commenting are bright sparks.........
"they need to win corners for these flickers to show their worth"

interesting point that players need to be available for Irish selection. There's no u21 international side so does that make it ok?

Anonymous said...

eggert played for germany as a keeper before

Anonymous said...

theres a development team which the majority who are in it are under 21

Anonymous said...

I think that Niall needs to get confirmation that they can play, as the rules do state the need available to be selected for Ireland that includes the Development Squad.

How can the IHA enforce a rule that everyone selected must be eligable for Irish Selection, thats Crazy.

So any former International cannot play in the Interpros? Thats a joke for guys and girls who want to play for their province after they retire. I was there when 'Trapper' and 'Bacchus' played for Leinster and it enhanced the tournament rather than took away from it.

Also the U21 Interpros are a joke. The IHA obviously dont even have an interest in the tournament, when they have a senior session on the Sunday and Division 1 league matches on the Saturday which take players like Darling and the Hartes and Loughry out of the equation.

Does anyone else feel this way?

eggert played for Bavaria as a keeper, not the german national team

I hope the mens tournament won't boil down to whoever scores the most goals against Munster! I believe that they haven't had a lot of preparation & to be missing 2 Hartes & Jason Lynch certainly doesn't help.

The Munster Squad selection and training has been difficult for all concerned due to the weather, injuries and the need to play rearranged fixtures for the clubs.
The players are proud to represent their province they have been born in no matter what the scores could be.

Its a pity for Leinster too who have precious little training time since the New Year with IHL, ISC and the weather problems. its probably the same up north which makes this tournament a real lottery in some ways.

Also a pity the Irish Unis are no longer involved, used to provide some good competition!

The two Hartes and Jason Lynch had little or no choice.

is 3rocks pitch going to be playable?? if not where will it be played? ucd now have 3 pitches?

any news on the girl's under 21's or have I just not spotted it?

Stephen Findlater said...

Squad news to be posted this evening on ladies U-21 side.

In regard to whether players from a different nation are allowed play in interpros, the IHA have confirmed to me that there are no rules prohibiting it and that the decision in each case rests with the constituent branches.

according to the ulster branch website the under 21 inter-pro's has been postponed!

Anonymous said...

U21's are cancelled.
I think Munster offered to host tournament but no hotels available due to the valentines weekend.
To be played sometime in April.

This may give the teams time to get a bit of structure on them and do some constructive training.

Anonymous said...

This is amazing. How could this happen? The weather forecast for the weekend is good.

Anonymous said...

What!!!! when is it on in april because junior interpros are on in april!

Anonymous said...

This seems to be an early desision to call off the U21s - as the weather forecast shows the weather improving ???

Anonymous said...

what a sad state of affairs. The under 21s is turning into an absolute farce which is very unfortunate. I personally feel its the most entertaining of the inter pros

Are the Harte's not too old anyway???

Maybe the delay will give the management time to come to their senses and select Mark English for the team - one of the outstanding senior players in Leinster this year.

Anonymous said...

no doubt that last comment was from a railway supporter, typical. Everyone had a fair chance to get selected in the trials and in my opinion the right team was picked

Anonymous said...

I agree that Mark English should have been selected due to the way he has being playing this year for Railway. He's being playin a very good midfield role and deserves to be in the team. Big mistake!

Anonymous said...

i would agree that Mark English should be on the team. He has proved this year at club and last year in school. Klass act

*I'm not a Railway player
