Men's Division Two: Week Ten results

Weston 2 (Shane O'Hare, Peter Barron) Avoca 3 (Enda Gallanagh, Fergal McGuinness, Stephen Brownlow)

In the absence of a Clontarf game this weekend, the race for the playoff spot took centre-stage and looks like it could go right down to the wire. A third successive single-goal win for Avoca has moved them into the mix.

They lie sixth but with games in hand over each of the sides above them but could make a late season charge. Enda Gallanagh - one of the last remaining ISC winners from 1996 - was on target along with Fergal McGuinness and Stephen Brownlow with Shane O'Hare and Peter Barron getting Weston's goals.

Navan 0 Dublin Uni 4 (Barry Glavey, Craig Moore, Aengus Stanley, Stu Cinnamond)
Trinity are another side closing in on the top of the table and their second 4-0 win in five days shows they have the capacity to challenge too. Barry Glavey scored from the spot before Aengus Stanley got his second in a week after four years without a single goal. He profited from Ben Hewitt's excellent spadework to clip in diving reverse shot.

Midleton-man Craig Moore added the third in the second half before Stu Cinnamond made it a four-star performance.

Bray 2 (Phil Davis 2) Suttonians 3 (Richie Wormold 2, Conor Gillett)
The key result of the weekend, Suttonians picked up a crucial away 3-2 win over Bray in Loreto on Saturday to move into second place on goal difference. In the process they leapfrogged Bray and are now level with Skerries who were left without a game after their fixture with Naas was called off.

Richie Wormold bagged a brace while young - but already well-travelled - Conor Gillett picked off another. Bray's Australian skipper Phil Davis scored a double too from set-pieces but in vain while Belgian David Bronner - here on a two-month stay - made his debut.

without question, trinity are on form and definately gonna make second place. i mean, 6 in one, half a dozen in the other at the end of the day, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Go on Brownlow!

i think trinity are clearly showing what everyone knows they are capable of. But i think it'll be too late for them to catch up.

sutton didn't put a full team out on tuesday - we're concentrating on the league. and showed that we are on form with this victory over bray. came from 2-0 down at half time. we destroyed trinity a few weeks ago. 5-0.

Who were sutton not playing midweek?! Richie Wormold wasn't there thats it! Last year we lost six three then beat suttonians four three were you not playing a full team then either? We lost five nil a few weeks ago because suttonians were the better team on the day and we won four nil midweek becuase on that occasion we were the better team. Show some class and stop making excuses.

Agreed Chris. Trinity won the game because they deserved too. No excuses. Not sure who posted above. Richie.

With the near certainty that Kilkenny will not want to play Division One next year where will that leave 2nd in Division 2. There would be a big call for the powers to make if Kilkenny do stay ahead of UCD. Would UCD play off or would Avoca get their wish and 2 teams be allowed to go up automatically. By my reckoning none of the current second place contenders would be able to hold their own in Division One and the initial euphoria of promotion could then lead to a long depressing season getting hammered week in week out. I'm sure this is somthing Clontarf have thought about as well and they are well ahead of the chasing pack. I suppose Trinity if promoted might get a few to join from their population and Suttonians might get one or two back from Fingal but it will be a tough scenario for any of these teams. Skerries hard work is great testament to them but they lost to a team that lost 14 nil to Clontarf. I accept that they have run Div One opposition close enough in cup games but its a different world. I dont know how Bray feel about a potential repeat of last season. Food for thought.

The only way a Div 2 team will hold their own in Div i is by getting several new "Div 1" players in. As it is I agree, Bray, Skerries, Sutton etc would just unfortunately get hammered most weeks if they went up with their current teams. Even Clontarf, assuming they win Div 2, will struggle big time without some major "imports".

Pillow - agreed you were the better team on the night...however i along with others had one eye on our match on saturday which meant an awful lot more to our season. this cup means nothing to most teams... look at railway last year, they lost to Brendans in the first round. (i didn't post the above but i do agree with it to an extent - we had full team out but our heads weren't in the game.) looking forward to the return match, it should be a good one.
Cheers,
Reuben.

Just looking at the above comment there from Reuben, I played in that game last year against railway and all their big guns were playing bar Kev O'Brien. We just got stuck into them and deserved our result on the day (4:3extra time). To say no one cares about the cup is rubbish. Railway were gutted that day. If you can't motivate yourself to play to your potential in every game then you shouldn't be on the pitch (coulda given one of the young lads a game who wanted to be out there). Cheers,
Del

Eoin Mc wasn't there, neither were either of the English brothers, David Holmes or Rubin. all first team regulars last season

Suttonians put out its full team and as chris said trinity were the better team on the night and won.

Suttonians won this cup last year and took great pride in playing in the neville davin cup either last season or this season.
good luck to trinity in the next round should be a good game against skerries.

I also think that none of the current "chasing pack" could survive in Div 1 the way they're playing at the moment.

However I think that after a well organised pre-season, an addition of 1 or 2 quality players and after a few games getting up to the 1st division standard they could be competitive with at least the bottom half of Div 1.

Glad to see the Sutt's captain's comment. I was going to ask what night the match was played, because having played div 1/2/3 midweek matches, I would be worried as the capt/coach if players were holding back because of weekend matches. If the heads not in it, don't pick up a stick. Pull in an under 21 and tell them to go play for their place.

Looking forward to the run in of Div 2, Tarf are in the distance, but who knows from the rest, wide open!

Thanks to the suttonians players for their comments and for leaving their names i think its clear that the comment from "anonymous" does not represent the thoughts of the club as a whole. Best of luck for the rest of the season having come so close last year and after finding some real form since the pakistanis have left when many teams would have crumbled nobody deserves a shot at promotion more. I look forward to our game at the end of the season when both teams will be trying their hardest as they always do and as any team who has pride in their shirt should always do.

why was the skerries v naas game off?

Anonymous said...

Apparently Naas didnt have a keeper....
Still dont know why the game should be called off for that? Surely they should have to put someone else in nets...
