Men's Division One: Week Thirteen results

Glenanne 4 (Stephen Butler 2, Shane O'Donoghue, Graham Shaw) Monkstown 3 (Andrew Ward 2, Stephen Cole)

Glenanne denied former centre-back Rory O'Donoghue a point at Rathdown as the Town edged the second-half but were undone in the first by a four-goal Glens salvo.

Stephen Butler made it 2-0, one from play and one from a corner, before Stephen Cole and tidy touch from Andrew Ward on the back post made it level at 2-2.

Graham Shaw and Shane O'Donoghue, though, restored the advantage by half-time to 4-2. Ward added his second and the Town's third after the break from a corner rebound but they were unable to snatch a point.

Richard Sykes made his senior debut while Filip Jaros was unavailable for Monkstown.

Pembroke 3 (Alan Sothern 2, Maurice Elliott) Fingal 1 (Mick McGuinness)
Pembroke looked good value for their victory at Serpentine Avenue though they left it late to secure the points. Alan Sothern's reverse made it 1-0 before Mick McGuinness continued his good form from corners to drag home an equaliser in the 30th minute.

The hosts edged the chances and finally broke the deadlock with ten minutes to go with Sothern applying yet another neat touch before Maurice Elliott deflected home Gordon Elliott's cross.

Corinthian 6 (Brian Doherty 2, Chris Pelow 2, Miles Warren, Sam Lobsey) Railway Union 0
The race for IHL places took another interesting turn as Corinthian drew level with Fingal and closing the gap on Monkstown, consigning the 1-0 turnaround to Railway earlier in the season to a distant memory.

Brian Doherty fired in two first half corners while a third was stopped on the line by a defender's foot. Chris Pelow (pictured) duly nailed the impending stroke for a 3-0 half-time lead. Pelow added a corner of his own before Miles Warren made it five before Sam Lobsey got his second in two weeks.

Kilkenny 0 Three Rock Rovers 2 (Peter McConnell, Tim Hill)
Three Rock picked up a second win of 2009 but were made to work by a spirited Kilkenny side who hit the post three times while captain Gary Sharman also missed a penalty stroke.

Their inability to apply the finishing touch cost them as Peter McConnell netted a stroke for Rovers while Tim Hill added a perfect touch to Lucas Piccioli's excellent reverse-stick cross from the left-wing.

UCD 1 YMCA 4 (Jacob Webber 2, Rob Whelan 2)
YMCA got the result that looks set to assuage any lingering doubts about any potential relegation issues this year and can now look to the rest of the season looking up rather than over their shoulder.

Aussie Jacob Webber winged in two drag-flicks in the first half added to by one from Rob Whelan from Mikey Fry's amazing run down the UCD endline. Wesley student Whelan added another in the second half to make it 4-0 before the Belfielders pulled one back.

Graham Shaw got Glenannes other goal Stephen. Monkstown could have got something from the game after to getting back into it when two nil down. Although Glenanne looked strong in very bad conditions. Monkstown will get fourth this year. They are getting better. Keep it up the mighty blues.

Glenanne goals were Butler x 3 and Richie Shaw x 1

That young elliot has a great game a lot to be learned from, very clever player!!

doherty best flicker in leinster???

Anonymous said...

No you would have to put Jakob Webber ahead of him, and Stephen Butler

Stephen Butler and Alan Sothern disagree. To clarify, Glenanne's goalscorers were (Butler x 2, Graham Shaw, Shane O'Donoghue).

Spiderman strikes again for the Y!

"doherty best drag flicker in leinster?" better then irelands highest and current goal scorer ever (i.e. from drag flicks) - Stephen Butler. WE dont think so.

Doherty the best flicker in leinster?

Wouldn't have thought so, he has not scored in any of the crucial games when you really need a goal.

Its easy to score a decent flick on a poor keeper.

For me Butler is still the best in leinster. i would have sothern up there too.

Butler best in Leinster --has done it at Senior National Level -- Doherty next but at 18 is a real prospect for future . Pelow and him are a serious unit with so many options at SC's

Town were just not at the races first 5 mins otherwise woulda been completely different story.Graham shaw was superb along with alan browne....Think the town will clinch fourth, starting to look good going forward with Watkins and Cole..Mighty glens for 1st!

Anonymous said...

town had chance after chance to score....they were by far the better overall team, glens were good in the first 20 and then fell off...their discipline needs to be addressed...if it wasnt for some bad finishing by the town they would have won it

Ha take a look at the comments made from railway fans that 6-2 was a joke in mens preview and it ended 6-0 looking pretty stupid now, CHC are a changed side with new SA recruits. Looking favourites for 5th ahead of Fingal still think town will take 4th.

I can only assume the person who wrote town were the better team is a monkstown supporter because even the town players wouldnt suggest that.

butler,doherty,southern,webber,pelow,brennan... is my order.

Stephen, I couldnt put a face to the name, but at a recent match you covered i recognized yourself. As a player who played against you, I always thought you were very close to a potential leinster call up. Unfortunalety I dont think you did get there but I am very glad to see you are man behind this useful and fun service.

"butler,doherty,southern,webber,pelow,brennan"
I would agree with that order, but mick Maguiness seems to be proving his worth as well. Doherty has to be close to Butler tho, whizzing 3 past walker and scoring on Harte.

confirm graham shaw got the 3rd goal. free on top of circle.

Glenanne were 2 nil up after 8 minutes. monsktown were unable to get out of their own 25 for that whole period. monkstown got 2 chances from 2 glenanne mistakes, resulting in 2 goals. despite glens dominating entirely upto the 2nd goal, town got back into it for the next 10 minutes. after that the glens 3rd and 4th goals reconfirmed glen total dominance. 2nd half weather conditions were very bad so much so that glens o'donoghue slipped into monkstown player and was awarded yellow card. Town had 3 other real chances one of which was a short corner which they scored. apart from that, there wasnt much more from either side. glens deserved the win and alwaya looked like they could turn it when needed. on the other hand, town were at full tilt.

yea i couldnt think of his name seems decent though!! it really is a game of short corners in some cases glens have being fortunate to have butler at there despence really is a big asset to have a flicker on your team who can consistantly score for you. doherty and webber are only 18 pretty impressive keep it up lads.

Anonymous said...

if CHC have such a good pc routine, why are they not top of the table?

Is it lack of corner chances?

Best flicker is mick mcg his flicks are not fast but 'wirery' and effective, he has scored on all the top goalies in leinster.

Is stephen o'keefe the best keeper in leinster now?

Anonymous said...

Certainly not, charlie, walker and fitzie way out ahead.

'O'Donoghue slipped into a Monkstown player' what a joke it was an awful tackle and deserved the card

Regarding the Glens Monsktown game, 1st half was all Glens except for a 10 minute spell when Monkstown scored two and had Glens rattled, especially butler. Glens then regained the lead and were under no pressure until half time.

2nd half the weather was brutal and no team on top, both cancelled each other out.

The 2 yellows for Brenann and Ward were a joke and O'Donoghue made a rash tackle straight after that and prob deserved a yellow.

A good game in difficult conditions, Town will put it up to the big sides this year.

Monkstown Supporter.

as you say they will every year i suppose, all talk

Mcguinness hasnt scored on Walker or Fitzie?

Anonymous said...

O'Keefe after moving to UCD has lost his chance at getting ahead of the others..

Anonymous said...

That's absolutely ridiculous, and it's comments like that that have destroyed UCD's chances of recruiting players and developing as a club. They did well to stay up last year, brought in a new coach and have been held back with attitudes like that of above.

who's fitzie?

Anonymous said...

he hasnt scored against the glens either

Anonymous said...

giving doherty a hard time up there, hes only 18 and has scored over 20 goals this season. maybe hes not as good as the top goal scorer in ireland, who cares hes young give him time. TRUST ME.

Anonymous said...

YM have only scored 20 league goals so far. hardly world class is he?

Anonymous said...

doherty doesn't play for YM, webber does
