Boys pick up Belgian draw

Ireland's U-16 boys ended their three-match series on a high as they picked up their first result of the week after plenty of endeavour. The Irish took an early lead when Shane Madeley (pictured) burst down the right to set up Nick Burns to score his second of the week.

Belgium responded with the equaliser in the 16th minute and then went ahead via a drag-flick. But Madeley responded with one of his own to tie the game up at 2-2 soon after half-time. Both sides had chances to win the game thereafter as the game opened up but neither got the finishing touch, leaving honours even.

In the girls game, Ireland missed out on the overall series after a 3-2 defeat in the third of three competitive fixtures for Una McCarthy's team. Belgium moved two goals clear before Leah Ewart pulled one back from a rebound.

Belgium restored the advantage a few minutes into the second half from direct corner strike but Juliette King-Hall's sublime pass set up Lucy McKee who slotted home from a narrow angle to tighten the game up.

I think the IHA were very remiss that they did not do up a programme for the matches - for some of the squad this might be there only outing in Irish colours and for others it might be the first of a long line of honours - as a parent I would have loved to have a momento of the 3 matches
