Pembroke conquer Europe

Pembroke produced a four-star performance to claim the EuroHockey Club Trophy for Ireland - emulating Glenanne's achievement in the inaugural event last year - with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Russia's Dinamo Elektrostal.

Alan Sothern was again the hitman supreme as he scored goals six, seven and eight for the tournament with his second hat-trick in four days. Indeed, all four goals came from corners as Conor Harte - who, along with his brother David, returned after a day's absence due to a family funeral -netted the fourth goal of the day from the set-piece.

Sothern broke the deadlock in the tenth minute, doubling up nine minutes later to give Pembroke a healthy lead. They were further aided by Alexey Mamoshkin's sin-binning but were unable to capitalise further before the break.

Sothern completed his hat-trick soon after the turnaround but his side were forced to endure a testing period as Mick O'Connor and Tim Lewis were both binned at the same time with Alexandr Tcherekov joining them on the sideline as it became ten versus nine.

David Harte pulled off a series of fine saves during that time to deny Elektrostal any momentum and block any thoughts of a comeback.

And rather than hold out, Pembroke went in search of more goals. Conor Harte added the fourth before Sothern had a late chance for number five but let a penalty stroke chance slip.

It mattered little as Pembroke completed the tournament in brilliant style with the added bonus that, subject to verification by the EHL, Ireland should receive two berths in next season's competition, leap-frogging Russia and Scotland to be the eighth ranked European team in the club rankings.
For the 'Broke, it could be the start of a bumper month of trophy-hunting with the Leinster league, the ISC and IHL all up for decision in the coming weeks.

t if we get two teams in the EHL but it does very little for the game domestically as there is no coverage of it outside hockey circles. It would be great if RTE/Setanta could take it up as it is very professionally presented.

Fair play to Pembroke, great result for Irish hockey. Two teams in the EHL next year is going to be great viewing. I see leuven made it to the semi's of the EHL competition, just goes to show how close Irish hockey is comming to real European success.

So I presume since Pembroke won the Euro Hockey Trophy they will miss out on the club of the year crown now...

votes were due in for that two weeks ago so probably doesn't make a difference!

sure pembroke won it last year for doing average in two european competitions and the isc, while trr and glenanne won the big prizes, so will be interesting how this year goes

Well done to Pembroke at the weekend, great result for them and for Irish hockey.

RE 2.15 blog, Well done also to TRR & Glens for winning "big prizes" last year, but CLUB of the year award is just that, NOT just a Men's 1XI team of the year award!

Well done to both TRR and Pembroke for getting the 2 EHL places, well done lads.

oRe 10.23! Theres a lot more you can ask for!

Pembroke 1's won ISC, were 2nd in Club champs, league & Neville.

Pem 2nds won everything again

Pem Ladies came very close to winning the league and were 2nd in ISC.

In U21's Pembroke hammered Glennane in the final

Im not saying that 'club of the year' is judged purely on what you win but if it is i dont think any other club could of come close to that last year

Club of of the year! Pembroke 2nd xi were probably club of the year or should have been team of the year at least: 53 wins in a row, won every trophy(7 competitions in a row) in two consecutive seasons 2006-2007-2008, unprecendented, give them some respect, would, according to most neutrals, probably have beaten most in d of the first XIs in Div 1. Credit where due id say!!
