Men's ISC round-up

If the third round belonged to Leinster side's, this weekend was definitely one for Ulster to savour. Annadale snuck past Glenanne, inflicting a third tight defeat on the Glens in a week while Fingal went down 5-4 after extra time to Lisnagarvey.

Monkstown bucked the trend, gaining a modicum of revenge over Kilkeel with a comprehensive 4-0 win with Alan Lewis adding two more in his quest for 30 goals this season.

There was expected wins for Harlequins (8-2 over PSBPP), Pembroke (6-1 against Bray), Cookstown (7-0 over YM) and TRR (4-1 over Trinity) while Inst were made to work by Bandon.

Results: Monkstown 4 (I Allen 2; A Lewis 2) Kilkeel 0; Three Rock Rovers 4 (M Darling 2, P Maguire, M Sier) Dublin University 1 (B Glavey) ; PSBPP 2 (A Carroll, D Byrne) Cork Harlequins 8 (J Hobbs 2, D Hobbs 2, E Gash 2, R Gash, D Lombard) ; Bray 1 (B Hinge) Pembroke Wanderers 6 (I Symmons 3, A Giles, A Sothern, J McInroy) ; Glenanne 0 Annadale 1(I Hamilton); Fingal 4 (M McGuinness D Bane 2, C Neville) Lisnagarvey 5 (?) ; YMCA 0 Cookstown 7 (I Steen 3, A Barbour, K Black, I Hutchinson, S Cuddy) ; Instonians 2 (A Gill, M Martin) Bandon 0

The draw for the quarter-finals will be made on Januray 5th.

I played against Cookstown on Saturday. Ive gotta be honest, they are seriously good as an attacking unit. It was 0-0 after 20 minutes, and we had two great chances to take the lead. If we had done so the game would have been very different. The movement of their front six is as good as ive seen. If they have a weakness, it is undoubtedly defensively. We couldnt take advantage of that on the day, but other teams will.I think they'll win the competition. They are a constant threat from open play, and have goalscorers all over the pitch.

No one will stop pembroke not even YM!

YM are knocked out! Why do we have to wait until the 5th for the draw? and why do we have to wait until march to see the quarters played? I understand there is internationals but thats only a couple of players from each team, it shouldn't hold the competition up by 2 months. It would make it much more interesting if we played the games in January.
Shame the glens were knocked out, would have been good to have the top four in the quarters.
Lets get more banter going, the site is too quiet the last few days.

Is it true that Butler missed the Glens match? I didn't hear that he was injured.

What about the Rovers Monkstown game this sat? who do people fancy to take the points?i believe Rovers are the stronger outfit man for man but i hear they have lost a bit of form and played well below par against trinity last weekend in the ISC. With Internationals missing this weekend and this effecting rovers more so than the town, this could be a factor!Monkstown seemed to have the upper hand last season.

Its a pity Fingal got knocked out, Garvey will be a real threat now. Fingal should of won the match from what I heard. 4-2 up with 10 mins to go.

I cant believe your including Monkstown in the top 4! Maybe 6th best team?

The Glens are now out of the running to win two of the big three club competitions do i sense the start of a slide down a very slippy slope for them.

wher was stephen butler for the glens annadale game? i understand he wasnt playing.

glens have been unlucky....they will bounce back and will beat pembroke in their home leinster league match

I think Glenanne will have a major uphill battle to win anything this season due to their latest form. I agree that they will probably win at home in the league against pembroke, however i feel it will not be enough as pembroke will have the league wrapped up by then.

For now they are still top three in leinster but i think the future for glenanne is not bright and i dont think they will be there in five years as rovers, monkstown,YM and corinthians will all be too strong for their aged squad. This may cause some controversy but with only one in each of the U16 and U21 leinster squads, can the future be that bright for them?

As a hockey fan i think it is no shame that fingal were knocked out of the ISC, they play ugly hockey and are only considered top 5, or 4 by some, because of the difficulty of playing decent hockey on their pitch. I think with the league improving every year they are going to get found out, if not this year then next season.

As for this weekend, with the additions to the rovers squad this year and the strength of their results against glens for example, they have moved themselves well into contention for top three. However, id like to see monkstown win this one as it would open the league up and make the second half of the season much more exciting. To the above blogger, on what basis should monkstown be considered behind corinthians in your ranking ("6th in lenister"), they have already beaten them comfortably this season. The age gap in the corinthians squad is currently too big, but i agree with a previous blogger on their future being bright and im sure they will be back in contention for top three in the coming years.

So as a hockey fan, you would prefer a team to score the majority of their goals via short corners then? Hmm! The majority of Fingal's goals come from play so if you call that ugly then so be it. As for their pitch, if a team cannot adjust to a surface then its their own fault, Fingal have to adjust when they play away games and you don't have any complaints from them. Also they don't do to bad as far as i can make out.

Okay, there's probably not much between Monkstown and corinthians however from the pool of players that they are both able to draw from they still underachieve year in year out.

Is it fair that Glens have Irish international players available to them this weekend while other clubs providing players to the Irish squad lose out? I can't see how this is a level playing field for all clubs. Should the league matches go ahead with clubs missing Irish players (through no fault of their own)? I see that the Ulster league will be put on hold until the Irish players return to the fold. To me this is the only fair way to operate.

The league should go on, missing players or not. Far too many games are being moved around for weak reasons. It will be interesting to see if the irish players play in the mills cup on Sunday though - as far as i know all clubs were told internationals were not to be played in the competition?

i think the comment about the glens is very harsh, theirs a hugh amount of young talent their at the moment, ritchie shaw, gary shaw, shane o d all u21, david shaw is mid 20's and dorans only 24,so to say that their isnt wnough talent to move the club forward is rubbish. Remember pembroke wanderers were in a worse position this time last year then the glens are now and look how they finished up at the end. The glens are having a blip but thats all it is a blip...theyll bounce back stronger.

Anyone know why S. Butler missed the cup match at the weekend? Seems odd.

Anonymous said...

gary shaw isnt u21! bt he is still young though.

i hear butler missed the game because the new ireland gear was being sold in elverys...he got the dates wrong got stuck in traffic trying to get to tallaght...weston beat bray in mills cup last night...theres a team for the future....

Did anyone see the Glen's v Annadale match... did Annadale deserve to win?

Anonymous said...

Dunno Bout Annadale, But the Glens definately Played Seriously Below Par, and Annadale didn't really look at their best either... neither team played well and neither team clearly deserved to win the game, the deciding factor was a moment of complete stupidity by a senior player to give away an unessecary stroke...

i definitely think the league games should go ahead. Teams like mine with irish players should be strong enough to compete at the top level without them and i think they get enough breaks as it is. For example the irish senior cup being held off till the middle of march for them. Complete joke.

as for the above comment...why not name and shame THE SENIOR PLAYER, what did this player do?

quite simply, fitzer was reaching for a ball passed across the circle and stopped it with the back of his stick. wouldn't refer to it as stupid.
