Saturday Round-up

Kilkenny 0 YMCA 2 (Fry, Whelan)
YM cut the bottom pair adrift with a goal in each half that sees them up to seven points. Mikey Fry and sixteen year old Rob Whelan got the goals that see the Sandymount side move level with Kilkenny in seventh place. Both sides, though, felt they could have scored more on the day with Graham Woods deputising excellently in the stead of international Ian Walker between the posts while Stephen Walker was outstanding at centre-back.

TRR 5 (Sier 4, P McConnell) Monkstown 2 (Allen, Lee)
Rovers produced a stunning comeback after trailing 2-0 within seven minutes. They still trailed at half-time after a scrappy encounter saw Monkstown thoroughly on top. A more controlled possession game in the second gave Maarten Sier the chance to shine from short corners. H nabbed two drag-flicks and two from play. Peter McConnell was also on target at the set-piece.

Corinthian 1 (Doherty) Glenanne 4 (Gary Shaw 2, Kane, Fitzpatrick pen)
Glenanne shrugged off their recent worries to pick up their first win in four games. They dominated the first half but had only a Gary Shaw goal to show for their efforts. Corinthians came back in the second to level but the Glens produced their best hockey in the final quarter to blow away their challenge. Alan Browne dominated midfield as Graham Shaw was moved into the front line. Stephen Butler, however, was injured just two minutes in and was subsequently unavailable for Sunday's 4-0 cup win over Clontarf.

Pembroke 3 (Sothern 3) Fingal 1 (D Bane)
Fingal took the lead early on through Dave Bane's drag-flick in a competitive battle. Pembroke, though - missing their internationals and with six players doubling up from the 2nds IJC win earlier against Lisnagarvey - finished stronger, with Alan Sothern bagging a hat-trick.

i was watching the TRR vs. monkstown game, talk about a game of two halves! TRR didnt even show up in the 1st half.and the town had a lot of luck as well.then the 2nd half was unbelievable from TRR! the dutch guy scoring 4 and then a drag from the captain shows more options from corners.TRR look very dangerous this season, the corners are coming together now. i wouldnt be surprised to see them win or at least go far in many competitions this year. i think the branch need to sort out the umpiring. it was horrendous yesterday and had a huge effect on many decisions.one of the umpires couldnt make up his mind on decisions at all and ruined the run of play. perhaps international umpires could give seminars on how to umpire?

Southern once again showing that when the superstars are away he can run the show

the corinthians glenane game was far closer than it suggests here. Corinthians were dominating most of the game and could easily have gone up 2-1. The young forwards once again showing great promise for the club

Rovers this season prove me right on the sad fact that hockey these days is all down to shortcorners. If you have a SC specialist you will finish near the yop. Simple as that.

thats rubbish about corinthians, they were very average and glenanne dominated the game, how many saves did their keeper make....1...2, and how many did murray make...much more!!!glenanne dominated them and let them back into by concideding a silly goal.i dont know what game that guy was watching!!!

Drag flicker or not rovers where brillant second half and throughly deserved there win. Tired of this drag flicker arguement all the best sides in the world have good drag flickers!!!

I always try to finish near the yop alright. Rasberry is my fave, anyone else partial to it?

no way im more of a strawberry man myself but thats not to say im not partial to a rasberry yop. anyone else got an appinion, i like to clear this up...strawberry or rasberry?

Nah, strawberry's too sweet for me, has to have a bit of a tang to it. Either Rasberry or the Mixed Berries one. I'm glad serious issues like this are now being given the forum for discussion.

On another note, pot noodles or super noodles?

CHC versus the Glenns was so tight up untill the last 10 minutes, with corinths having a penelty corner to go 2-1 up...in fairness to the "mighty" glenns they absolutley ripped them apart for the finall ten and played some great hockey with shaw being clinical in the circle....and as for yops gota go with strawberry!

The whole point in my 'dragflicker' comment is that, yes, all the best teams in the world have good dragflickers;that's why they are the best teams in the world. My point is that that what the game is about now: shortcorners. And i find it disappointing.

So if you watched the rovers game on sat or rovers this season then you would of seen that hockey is not all about drag flickers because they played some awesome possesion hockey and score many goals from open play.

Listen, i dont think there' much of an argument here. Rovers top scorer, by a distance, is Sier. 80% of his goals come from penalty corners. Without that threat, they wouldnt have scored half the goals they have this season, and therefore would not have won as many games.

how are blatant comments about Glenanne being allowed to stay up on the forum when so much else is removed....i'm all for everything staying up but if you are going to take comments down surley you can't have people saying that Glenanne are "harrassing the umpires"...on a lighter note it has to be strawberry

Anonymous said...

easy option to blame umpires... content removed bining players left right and center what good will that do?....im a strawberry man ..so its 2-1 strawberry

I agree with the comments aboout the Corinthians/Glennane match-- much closer than result would suggest on paper.Corinthians are playing excellent hockey and are developing into a fine team with quality coaches on the sideline. In fairness to Glennane they produced 5 minutes of clinical play that ended the match as a contest . But they seem to get away with so much "verbals" to umpires.

fingal any good???

Pig and Heffer do the best sandwiches in town, no doubt!! Just opposite the Bleeding Horse for anyone that doesn't know. I love the Californian.

On a hockey note, if you take Fingal's key players out of the game they have weaknesses you can exploit like any team. They do hit their forward line very early through Bane at the back and that can pose a threat.
