There is one unfamiliar name in Gene Muller’s squad for their next training camp prior to their warm-weather camp in South Africa in the build up to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament next April.
Louisa Moore - an Irish national who is relocating to Leinster in January - currently plays her hockey with Northerns in South Africa. It is an interesting inclusion given that last week she was initially part of the South African squad named to play Ireland next month but was subsequently replaced on December 5 due to an ankle injury.
Muller said of Moore that“She is a 23 year old striker and the national camp will afford her the opportunity to compete for a place on the national team.” The camp will give Moore a chance to train with the Irish team and give her a fair crack at becoming part of the Irish set-up should the possibility arise.
Otherwise, former Trinity keeper Emma Grey and Loreto's Niamh Small are among the uncapped players in the squad along with UCD’s Christine Quinlan
The squad will visit Muller’s homeland, South Africa from the 10th – 20th January and the forthcoming training camp will serve as preparation for this tour. The trip to South Africa will provide the Irish women with valuable match time when they play the Dutch U21’s twice and South Africa four times.
