Sunday's men's round-up

Pembroke 3 (Fulton, Sothern, Symons) Glenanne 2 (Parsons 2)
Pembroke overturned a half-time deficit to take a three-point lead over Glenanne and TRR, despite being reduced to eight men for the closing stages today. Two short corner rebounds from Brendan Parsons to one from Craig Fulton saw the Glens to a 2-1 half-time lead. Fulton also received a yellow for a foul on Alan Browne. Pembroke dominated the early parts of the second half and were rewarded with two goals in two minutes. Alan Sothern’s beautiful deflection from 10 yards out from John McInroy’s left wing cross equalised before Ian Symons drag gave them the lead. As usually happens when these sides meet, discipline flew out the window with Justin Sheriff, Sothern and McInroy all being sent to the side.

TRR 4 Bray 1
Rovers moved level with Glenanne with a game in hand, beating rock-bottom side Bray.

YMCA 1 Fingal 2

some of the comments the pembroke players were making on the pitch were an absolute disgrace.they may be top of the league but the way some of thier players conducted themselves they should be ashamed.

Obviously anonymous was playing in this match. Please don't hide behind the post. Please post your name if you are making claims of misconduct against Pembroke. Was it that you let in 3 goals? or are you a concerned hockey fan? I watched the game and actually both teams were well behaved. It was actually the umpires who got close to ruining the game. Ray O'Connor did not have a good game, in fact he was aggressive and confrontational towards players. A good umpire should go unnoticed. Geoff Conn was excellent and is ever improving.

I was at this game - as a neutral who wanted to watch the supposed two best teams play. Well i was very dissapointed.

The abuse that both teams were giving each other was a disgrace. Both teams were at it - but pembroke gave a little more from what i heard and seen. There players deserved to be sent off.

These two teams are meeting each other so often that they seem more interested in settling grudges than actually playing the good hockey that both have shown over the years.

pemboke for the league as glenanne are letting in too many soft goals.

I think Glens are going to struggle to get back to top form after this weekend. The blow of losing to Pembroke and Three Rock, arguably their two biggest rivals this year, in one weekend is disastarous.

I suppose Pembroke lost their discipline a bit, didn't think Glenanne did and i didn't really hear much chat going on the pitch.

It was a good game but not nearly as good as the ones in the league the last few years.

Glenanne were the unluckiest side i have seen in a while this weekend but you have to take your chances.

how could you possibly claim that pembroke were well behaved??they had 4 yellow cards during the game!

Anonymous said...

I didn't see the game but to have 4 Pembroke players receiving yellow cards sounds like a serious lack of discipline. Was their discipline really that poor?

I saw the Monkstown Pembroke match on Saturday and it was good to see the Town holding there own against the leagues best team. They were unlucky not to have been awarded a stroke just before half time which could have changed the outcome. At that stage it was still 0-0. Pembroke play good hockey and there movement upfront is something all young players should be watching and learning from, but I do feel Monkstown were better than the score line suggested. Monkstown matched Pembroke in the number of corners but unfortunately just don't have the strength that the other top clubs have in a good strong drag flick threat. That to me is the difference! If Monkstown could provide more threat from corners they would be a real force in the leinster league. What do others think?
I would also agree if there was a way of getting the league table up somewhere that would be great, as the leinster branch don't keep theres very updated. I am actually surprised they get the winners correct at the end of the season. Particularly in the lower leagues.

both teams were well behaved??? what about the 3 yellows???

Is it any coincidence that the top 3 teams in the league have a dragflick specialist who scores the majority of their goals? Pembroke (Symons), Glens (Butler), TRR (Siers). I know its all part of todays game, but it's a pity thats what the game is based around. Looking at International matches, and the EHL highlights, It's the teams that create and score the most shortcorners that win.

there was act 4 yellows!

I also saw the town against pembroke last sat, and yes they are a talented side and did hold their own for 50 mins of the game, but thats it, they dont have the experience or the consistency to last the full 70 mins or for that matter the full length of a season without slipping up.They seem to have quality youngsters but can never find the right balance with youth and experienced "heads" who can grind out a result against the top sides. and if you dont score at the very least 40% of your penelty corners, your side really needs a consistant goal scorer which im still unsure Monkstown posses. Completely disagree with the monkstown comment, I think they are the 6th best team behind three rock corinthians and fingal. They are weak at the back. The only player on there team that would make our pembroke team is Watkins and I believe many will agree with this.

After watching the game on Sunday I dont think it was a case of Pembroke having poor discipline on sunday i think it would be more suitable to say that the umpires struggled to control the game, any tackle or misdemeanour towards the end of the game resulted in a yellow card which wasn't a reflection on the incidents involved...

i felt the game was good and pwhc deserved it in the 2nd half...hold my hand up...as for the comments...yes pwhc made some comments but id be a liar if i said that the glens didnt...thats top level sport people make comments to put off thier opponant .
These two clubs have always had a big riviarly and now ive experienced it on both teams i can say that u give as good as you get...end of!!!

as for this year..dont write off the glens just yet...with goulding and omalley back after xmas that will be a hugh lift and anyone who says pwhc wont miss symmo is a liar...hes a top flicker and scores goals, but they probably have enough quality to replace him but not his flicks.thats my honest opinion.

I don't know what game you guys were watching but as a player who plays for neither Glennane or Pembroke I can only say that I totally disagree with both comments.

Sherrif was sent off for a nothing stick tackle
As for the game I thought it was a real game of chess, the standard wasn't actually that good but I thought 1 player who stood out and played really well was Brendan Parsons, he has proved to be an exceptional player for the Glenns and doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Monkstown 6th best Team? Did they not finish third and make it to the Club Championships last season? Did they not beat Corithians 4-1 this season already? Yest they lost to Fingal this year but they would come out top 9 times out of ten against them. Whether they are better then Rovers well we will have to wait one more week to see that!

Anonymous said...

I would agree with the comment about short corners, the game is unfortunately all based on winning and scoring short corners. Its not so much about the hockey but how good a drag flicker you have. Look at the Glens if they didn't have a drag flicker like Butler would they have won so much over the past few years? The game needs to become more about the hockey rather than about the set piece. Could there be any other way of rewarding fouls in the circle without giving a free shot? The short corner is a harsh penalty for the ball touching your foot in the circle etc.......

Anonymous said...

Watkins the only Monkstown player that would make the Pembroke team?? Monkstown do lack the drag flick threat but they are a team from my own experience that can score many goals from open play. They move the ball well and their forwards tend to be in good positions. I wouldn't like to play them with a good short corner routine, as they have already beaten us once this year without scoring a corner. I think that Rovers will beat them next week all the same as they have shown already they can beat the top sides.

I competely disagree with the comment that monkstown lack a goal scorer. Alan Lewis is a quality finisher and will score you 30 goals a season. He would play in the pwhc team week in week out.

In relation to the Pembroke v Glens match what’s all the fuss about I was at the game and didn’t see too much wrong, its a mans sport people need to except it as it is. If these guys were not at each other like that I would be more worried about where their hunger was.

Monkstown’s problem is they only have Watkins, Lewis and Brian Groves who consistently score year in year out!! As for their youth I am tired of hearing from them all about how good they are. Let’s see them as they always seem to disappear before making the 1st team.

Anonymous said...

Definitely have to agree with that. For me Parsons is definitely one of the best, and most underrated, payers on that team

aaarrrrrrggghhh! he's a pirate!

The rumour mill is up and running again. The talk of the town is that Pembroke have lined up a former German international to replace Symons. Can someone confirm or deny this?

Anonymous said...

Its Glenanne who is bringing back a former german international Ferry Musert - played for the glens a few years back - Musert will be back in the country after xmas holidays.

He has played and coached at EHC Munich & also in Leipzig

He Will also be coaching junior teams - a quality signing for the club.

Pembroke have signed under age German international Fritz Hitlerbaum for the remainder of the season. He's good mates with Roana Gormley and Craig Wilson whish paved the way for his arrival.

Again Pembroke are bringing in a player!! Home grown talent??? Your becoming Chelsea!! Thanks to Mr. Abramovich!!

Craig Wilson is the sort of talented player been shafted with all the imports!! DL

a load of crap being talked again, great to see...not.

Pembroke are not bringing in any german players after christmas, again,a nothing rumour,we have a german player that has been here since the start of the season for a year to learn english but he is more involved with the seconds than the firsts.get your facts straight before you start another ridiculous string of posts

Alan Lewis, 30 goals a season?! Maybe for the 2nds!!Haha!Fair play to him, backpost poacher.

Anonymous said...

With regard to the comment that Monkstown would beat Fingal 9 times out of 10.

Fingal have won the last 3 meetings between the teams. Twice this year and once in the Q/F of the Leinster Senior last year. They have all the skill and flair in the world but have no end product.

I suggest you look into things further before making ridiculous comments.

Alan lewis has scored goals year in year out against the best teams in particular. He would be an asset to any first division side. Aside his goal scoring ability, he also has bags of pace and energy.

Anonymous said...

Could Alan Lewis please refrain from posting comments about himself thanks. Anyway, i thought he played for Bray.

Dougal said...

Thanks for the vote of confidence and the slags. Don't know about starting week in week out for Pembroke but I do like to think I contribute my fair share of goals for Monkstown. 30 goals a season would be a difficult task for a player like myself who doesn't have a drag flicking ability and only score from play. 15-20 is what I aim for.
Backpost poacher??? Thanks Blenner! I do get the odd goal away from that post. As for Bray I played one season for Bray around 4 years ago. I have been with Monkstown 18 years. So no I am a Monkstown player!

pembroke ahve brought in a german player until february.hes a defender and already players are suffering...byron dunne...hello!!craig wilson.....rowan pearson....scott furlong....all homegrown talent suffering from people importing players...if i was coach, simple if your only here till feb then enjoy the seconds....and he seemed to play a fair bit against the glens from what i saw....keep letting them bring in players...see where they are in 2 years when their all gone.

Oy Findlater, let's get the league table up!! Get your finger out.

And everyone knows Mikey Fry is the original pirate in Leinster hockey. Parsons wouldn't even make his first mate. No eye patch, no hook, no wooden leg. Poor effort Parsons. Good bandana though I'll grant you that.

Arrrrrr.

none of you have a clue what is going on within Pembroke wanderers mens first and second eleven squads, ....Scott Furlong is involved in the squad but due to a back injury he hasnt played in 3 months, not even trained,so how can he be expected to be in the team now?he was a reserve for the EHL squad even when injured i think that shows he is a part of the set up...Craig Wilson plays for the firsts just not all the time, with forwards like Justin Sherriff Gordon Elliott Alan Sothern Paddy Good and John McInroy he isn't always going to get his game but he is thought highly of by all within the club, As for Rowan Pearson he hasnt been able to commit himself to consistent training this season as he is studying for a masters in DIT and finds it hard to balance both study and training...its as simple as this,if you dont train you dont play...All these comments about Pembroke are getting old and quite frankly are also quite annoying,if you dont know what youre talking about dont talk at all

Why are people not stating the obvious. Glenanne are lacking in defence. Why do they continue to play aged players that are quite obviously too old to be playing. It's clearly annoying Brennan etc... It wasn't pembroke that won the short corners in the second half that won them the game, it was the same Glenanne player every time.

Anonymous said...

I think that it's unfair the way some of the big name player carries on in games and gets away with it in the . Neither of the two umpires in the recent Glenanne Pembroke match reacted appropriately to typical diva-like behaviour - talking back, picking up the ball when they think it should be their free....

On a different note,I am glad that Justin no longer does that stupid celebration!!
