Whilst it was highly unlikely tonight would turn out otherwise, Hermes claimed the women's league with a hard fought 1-0 win over Pembroke at UCD. The goal came in the closing stages as the game became more frantic.
Nicola Evans was the insitigator, stealing the ball on the right side of the circle before drifting across the goal, using her pace to leave three players in her wake before firing a reverse-stick shot. Siobhan Burke saved the shot but Anna O'Flanagan snaffled up the rebound from five yards, also on her reverse.
It left Pembroke's club championships hopes dangling by a thread and gave them little time to get back on terms. They had a penalty corner on the final whistle but could not direct it goalward and ended up behind Loreto and Railway in fourth place.
It completes an amazing turnaround for Hermes who drew five of their first eight seasons this term and were in fifth place at one stage. Since then, though, they won ten on the spin conceding just one goal while bedding in a blend of youngsters and look like the side can take a transitional phase in their stride.
