IHL: Men's Round Two Round-Up

Group A

Cookstown P Annadale P

Instonians P Pembroke P

Cork Harlequins 1 (Dan Hobbs) Glenanne 4 (Stephen Butler 2, Enda Tucker, Gary Shaw)
Glenanne lie well out in front of Group A as Cork Harlequins chances of making the semi-finals lie in tatters after a second straight loss at the hands of Leinster opposition. The game was evenly poised until midway through after Stephen Butler and Dan Hobbs had exchanged first half corners.

In a niggly game, Graham Shaw and David Lombard were both sent to the bin while both sides raised issues with the technical bench but it was the Glens who gained the upper hand on the pitch.

They enjoyed a 15-minute purple patch in the second half as Butler roofed a second drag-flick. Another Butler corner was saved by Chris Daunt but ex-Weston man Enda Tucker was on target with the rebound with a bonus point in the offing with 15 minutes to go.

And Gary Shaw obliged with the game's only field goal, receiving a ball from the left flank, drew Daunt out of the goal, went halfway around him before rolling in a reverse. With both other games abandoned because of the frost, the Glens have given themselves the best chance of progressing.

Group B
Banbridge 2 (Stephen Dowds, Ross McCandless) Cork C of I 1 (Stephen Parker)
Banbridge came from a goal behind to pick up their second home win of the competition and take full control of Group B. Stephen Parker opened the scoring with a deft touch in the 16th minute after Eugene Magee had gone close earlier.

CI went close again, forcing Gareth Lennox into a double save before Ross McCandless saw his first drag-flick opportunity denied by the returning Mark Ruddle to keep the score at 1-0 at half-time.

Into the second half, John Jermyn fired wide before Richie Dorman was sent to the bin, handing the initiative to Bann. Barely a minute after gaining the man advantage, Stephen Dowds rifled a loose ball into the net to equalise in the 41st minute. Diarmuid Reay drew another save out of Ruddle before McCandless put Bann in front with a drag to the top-left corner.

Jermyn had one late corner opportunity while Dowds had a chance to deny CI a bonus point after man-of-the-match Geoff McCabe played him in but it went abegging.

Monkstown P Lisnagarvey P
The ISC rematch lasted just one quarter as Rathdown - one of Leinster's slippier pitches - saw a number of tumbles in the opening minutes to force the umpire's hand and call the game off. The Town were 1-0 up, Brian Groves getting a touch from Stephen Cole onto the post and in. The umpire took his time to award the goal, though Ian Allen whacked in the ball on the rebound to make sure. In the end, it was all academic

What happens to the postponed matches? The annadale cookstown game made it to the end of the 3rd quarter with annadale 4-1 up

cookstown annadale game to be replayed....cookstown have used their 'get out of jail'card..still unbeaten at home

Anonymous said...

Stephen could you let us know as soon as you hear anything about postponed matches or refixes? Thanks

im guessing that they have to be restarted at 0-0. it's really harsh on annadale and monkstown but thats the way it is. happened to us (weston) a few years ago against three rock rovers.was 2-2 at halftime, but called off due to the pitch being frozen.

cookstown are a joke, from what i hear they were completly outplayed by a better team and when they realised things werent goin their way they blamed the pitch and weather, not the 1st time this has happened!!!

how is it harsh on monkstown they were 1-0 up after the first quarter.r u saying they would of gone on to win it.besides that the monkstown goal shouldn t of been a goal anyway.very harsh on annadale i must say

Why do comments slating cookstown keep gettin deleted this isnt the first time they have called a game off when they have been gettin stuffed, really feel for annadale! Cookstown out of jail again, yet again they dont have the bottle for the big games!!

why was it not a goal? missed it, wasn't at the game myself. fill the rest of us in?

Anonymous said...

And why would a deflection inside the dee not be a goal???

rules are rules boys.. if you were at the game on saturday at cookstown you would know that the umpires called it off.. not the cookstown players.. they dont make the decisions.. the umpires do..

Anonymous said...

CHC fan... can you explain the school postponing games to suit themselves? can you blame the umpires on that?

Anonymous said...

because the ball hit the post came back into play. umpire blew whistle thinking it was a goal.. then the ball was put in the net!

Anonymous said...

It was a beauty of a goal, no one was sayin the ball didnt go in off the post. Garvey was claimin it hit his foot not his stick

Re: the school game, I heard everyone was ready to play and the Ban coach refused to play... anyone else shed any light on this.

i can..
game was originally on for wednesday. cookstown cancelled due to boys having flu.
game on for sat.
cookstown then put game off on sat due to AIL
game now for friday... game on friday cancelled at last moment due to frozen pitch (interestingly games were played on the pitch later than night)
game on monday both teams there pitch very hard and covered with ice in one corner. pitch also covered in rock salt to thaw the pitch.
umpires called game off.

Ah, so the umpires called that Ban Cookstown game off, not Cookstown like was indicated earlier. No worries, that'll be that cleared up now.

cordener probably had more to do with the calling the game off on monday than the umpires. dan clarke who was the umpire said it was playable.. the other umpire didnt agree from waht i heard..

i was standing beside dan and mick.. both agreed game was off. even if it was started it wouldn't have made 70 min

HA HA. Why is everybody blaming cookstown for games being cancelled? The umpires make the decisions not the players, and also both coaches agreed that the game should be abandoned!!!
When was the last time a game was cancelled where cookstown were getting stuffed??

Secondly, for anyone to say the cookstown players were totally outplayed is a joke. You obviously weren't at the game. Cookstown totally domiated the first have, hitting the post and crossbar, and found themselves 1-0 down to a penalty corner that should never have been given!!

Thirdly, how dangerous does it have to get for a game to be called off. you couldn't see from one side of the pitch to the other.

It seems to me cookstown are now going to be treated like permbroke and rovers and totally slated when the win something or get a bit of good fortune!!!

No games were played in cookstown last friday nite.

Pitch was frozen.

People should not make acusations without knowing at the facts.

All this ' from what i hear' nonsense. If you don't know the facts don't argue!!

Interesting to see that the cookstown v annadale match report that appeared on dale's web on monday -stating that the game was abandoned at the request of the c'town players, has now been removed al-together. Must have realised it was a load of nonsense

Is this the Leinster hockey blog or the Ulster tit for tat blog?

Anonymous said...

we haven't got our own blog up here in ulster, so this is the only chance we have - - sure it keeps you leinster boys in the loop.

Don't know what all the whingeing is about after the umpires abandoned games at C'town due to fog and frozen pitch. Few weeks ago C'town travelled to Raphoe and the game was abandoned by the umpires at the start of the second half with C'town leading. Both teams agreed it was the right decision--so all those we'ens gripeing-just get your nappies changed.

i can confirm that a match was played at cookstown on friday night. Raphoe V Armagh. it was scheduled to allow the Armagh men to watch their ladies in the AIL and they agreed to meet Raphoe half way.
if anyone is interested Raphoe won 6.1
pitch was fine

Haha This Ulster blog is gettin entertaining for us leinster folk! Seems to me that the only Northern club with a bit of bottle in this new IHL is Banbridge, those are 2 pretty impressive results. My tip for the semis are,

Glenanne
Pembroke
TRR
Banbridge

ye no one outside leinster really stands a chance of winning it. would be very suprised if those three leinster teams weren't in the semi-finals.

Anonymous said...

leinster, leinster, leinster. It's about time people, particularly in Dublin realized there is hockey being played elsewhere in Ireland!!!

Tip for semis:

Pembroke
Cookstown
C O I
Banbridge

i agree with inst fan and his tips -pembroke will always be there or thereabouts.Cookstown have now, with all the criticism received, have a great incentive to go thru -bear in mind that they have 3 home games on their sand pitch where they are unbeaten for ages. Bann have only been beaten once(cookstown)this season and have saved their best displays for ihl games. Cof I have got off to a great start and will fly the flag for Munster. def not all about Leinster where there are only 3 teams competing for league. There are 6 teams in Ulster league who could win the league.

Can I just clear a few things up...as an Annadale person at the game I can categorically state that there is NO BLAME AT ALL proportioned to Cookstown for the matter last week. Annadales issues are with the IHL and the IHA regarding the lack of clarity in the rules. Yes as people have said it is a "rule" but as it stands it is open to a tremendous amount of abuse. Cookstown could be 4-1 up with 5mins to go vs Pembroke in Dublin when the floodlights mysteriously "fail"...as the current rule stands it is replayed!! Also I can also state that apart from one 'lone voice'our view is that Cookstown were NOT outplayed at all. We were very lucky to still be in the game...however the comment regarding the PC...it hit Hutchy on the foot in the circle...pretty nailed on I am afraid. Looking forward to going up there again this weekend. Just hope Cookstown arent out more expense this weekend and the IHL allow games to be played with a "skeleton" format regard food, programme etc afterwards.
