Men's Division One: UCD 0 Pembroke 8

UCD 0 Pembroke 8 (Alan Sothern 3, Conor Harte 2, Michael O'Connor, Craig Fulton, Alan Giles)
A bonus game for UCD, a potential banana-skin for Pembroke, neither scenario came to pass at Belfield tonight as Pembroke wiped the floor with UCD once the half-court defence was broken down.

Both have much more significant games this season in determining their fate and there was little doubt of the result after Alan Sothern and Conor Harte drag-flicks had the 'Broke 2-0 up. The students had one chance toward the end of the first half after Neil Young's hit from outside the circle hit the post drawing David Harte into three saves in succession.

But a Sothern tap-in 25 seconds after the restart followed by a reverse to complete his second hat-trick in four days ended an already sterile contest. As a result, Pembroke become the league's third leader in four days.

sotherns on fire yet again

Hes becoming what he was at school level at club level! He should only be allowed play for the national side! Well done Alan!

from what i have seen sothern has scored an awful lot of goals from 3 or 4 yards! maybe he needs the players he has around him to give him the ball. bigger picture?

they all count

Just shows the gulf there is in the top division. Now with the top 5 pulling away and we are not even half way through the league.

yes he's lethal at club level but is he good enough for Ireland? I think the jury is still out...

honestly how do people reckon he would do say playing for ymca or railway team mid to bottom?? no offence to the two teams just an example!!

Wow... way harsh comments there. Sothern has scored a rake this season, top scorer in Leinster last year and he's fairly young.

Ok, he doesn't look fully comfortable in his skin at national level yet but a few people said that about Mitch about a year ago and then he goes and has a great run and looks like a world class forward.

Patience is a virtue. Give him time.

why do some people spend their whole time looking to knock young players. I have seen him play on a number of occasions and he is a quality player with a good eye for goal and long he may he continue for club and country. Lay off these young players and offer something constructive for a change.

Hold on a second, have u seen this guy play? Anonymous people put ur name to these comments! I have played and trained with the guy for years and realize just how good the guy is. To say he scores his goals are from 3 or 4 yards is laughable. The guy has everything, drag flick, lethal shot, incredible skills and brilliant close finishing. He scores goals from 3 or 4 yards but if its so easy then why arent the other pembroke forwards doing it too. Sothern will be a top player for Ireland, no doubt in my mind. I for one believe he has more to offer than Mitch Darling.

Alan Sothern is the best finisher in Ireland, fit as a anyone, fast off the spot as most, strong as a n OX. The guys gonna be world class!

Anonymous said...

Southern is not and will never be world class - no Irish player is. Although I do agree he will be a top player for Ireland.

Anonymous said...

What stops him from being world class? He has the ability to create something out of nothing. Best player in the Leinster league.

anyone kno the start time and place of sutts versus the tarf this weekend???

Anonymous said...

Southern never offers more than mitch darling. The guy offers absolutely nothing outside of the circle. Mitch Darling is a complete player and Southern has a way to get there although he probably will at some stage.

Sothern is seriously on form at the mo!
To say he is not as good for Ireland is laughable. He has scored on several occassions for Ireland.
He is definitely better than Mitch Darling and doesnt get half the credit he deserves.

Fair play Alan and best of luck to all the lads up North this weekend!!

When was the last time the Ireland team even qualified for a world cup or an olympics? To be considered world class a player would have to stand out in one or both of those tournaments.

To say Alan Sothern offers nothing outside the circle is nothing short of unfair. He works as hard as any forward outside the D, has great link up play, quality close control skills. This argument is getting quite disgraceful in my opinion. What more can you ask for in a player than to score you a hatrick and then 4 goals in the next? How can a player whos playing in the best league in ireland and leading the scoring charts by a long stretch not be considered to be one of Ireland's best. People need to get behind players like this, I just sincerely do not understand how someone can score 7 goals in 2 games and still be slated! Baffles me!

Some very good young players coming through at the moment who will be world class one day Mitch Darling and Jason Lynch to name two.Best of luck to them.Encouragement please!

Anonymous said...

Jason Lynch is a talent on the ball with his stick skills but he lacks in decision making which will hold him back,he slows attacks down and creates pockets of pressure on himself.Mitch is a talent but is still quite inconsistent, but he's young,he just needs time.Sothern is the best goalscorer in the country and at this time looks to be showing the consistency in his all-round game that is needed for the top level, and in my opinion is the most complete forward in Irish hockey.

Good signs for the future that our young forwards are of such a high standard.Let's hope Mr.Revington finally takes Ireland to a new level.

Mitch Darling hands down the strongest up and coming player in Ireland. Future Ireland captain or dare I say it GB Olympian!

if i had a joice between sothern and blakney i would chose blakney. ask any defender in the leinster league who they would not like to defend. for me there is only one winner.

all the same sothern is class. and so is mich. glad im not the coach...

Mitch Darling future ireland captain?Try another one man!He is an extremely talented player, but also a very selfish player.Captain is not a role i would link him with!

Anonymous said...

Surely the fact that Mitch has captained school and interpro teams before totally contradicts that last statement? All the coaches that gave him that role cant be wrong so obviously they dont see the supposed selfishness that you do

How predictable Irish sports fans are,Young Alan is having a really good season, scoring goals almost every game and great to see.but lets not get carried away,he is suddenly regarded as". World Class".

This only prompts the other extreme, the "Begrudgers"
comparing him unfavourably to other young players.

We are lucky to have some really good young players, exciting to watch and scoring goals.

Lets just enjoy.

well if young mr. Southern was no good surely no one would be on here talking about him so he must be doing something right
