Men's Division One: Week Five results

Pembroke 3 (Ronan Gormley, Paddy Conlon, Gordon Elliott) Glenanne 1 (Stephen Butler)
Another incident-packed battle as Craig Fulton picked up a first half red-card and Ronan Gormley missed a stroke but Pembroke still came away with the win.

Stephen Butler netted from a drag-flick before seeing yellow. Pembroke's goals came from Gormley's reverse from a tight angle which fell into Alan Sothern's path, Alan Giles - who had another superb game - got the second and Gordy Elliott got another from close to the end-line for the only goal of the second half.

UCD 1 (Tadhg Walsh-Peelo) Fingal 2 (Glen Shekleton, David Bane)
Fingal and UCD had to wait a long time before the goals came but three in the last five minutes gave the game a thrilling finish. Stephen O’Keeffe – who was named player-of-the-tournament at the Intervarsities – was in fine form once again but Glen Shekleton, set up by Paddy Gahan, got Fingal on the board with a scrappy effort late on.

Before that, Mick McGuinness, Conor Connolly and Eamon Bane all spent time in the sin-bin. UCD equalised at the back post through Tadgh Walsh-Peelo just 40 seconds later before David Bane won the game on the final whistle with a drag-flick which hit a defender on the line before going in to break UCD's hearts.

The students lose again but for the second league game this season look a much improved outfit than last year. With Railway and Kilkenny off the mark, they will need to start picking up points soon, though.

Corinthian 5 (Chris Pelow 2, Davy Carson, Nate Coolidge, John McInroy) Kilkenny 1 (Tom Manning)
Corinthian's inconsistent start to the season got back on track, following up last week's loss to Railway with a second win of the campaign to move ahead of Monkstown in the race for IHL qualification. The goals were spread around with school's champion Davy Carson, American Nate Coolidge and coach John McInroy netting in addition to Chris Pelow's double, all coming in the first half.

Monkstown 1 (Ian Allen) Railway Union 1 (Eoin McArthur)
In a recurring theme, Monkstown did not take advantage of their corners, spurning seven this weekend after having the best of their game with Railway. Ian Allen opened the scoring from the penalty spot after one corner found a foot on the line. Railway, though, tied the game up with five minutes to go through Eoin McArthur as they upset the odds for a second successive week.

Well Stephen, it didn't take long before your site has degenerated to the usual hate mail found on these sites.

Some of the blogs re Pemboke v Glens are disgraceful.

Stephen if this continues ,you will be forced to close this site down. Nobody deserves to be treated like this. There are laws in this country.

I think what is needed are full and accurate reports of matches. Unacceptable behavior by players and officials should be reported. It happens in every other sport. You don't want people making allegations on the Blog but you do want accurate reports on what happens during the game. Red and yellow card incidents should be reported.

The real problem is that the site is simply filling the vacuum that is being left by Umpires and Administrators in not taking strong and consistent action at the point at which it arises. Umpires need to meet and agree what is/not acceptable and communicate this to all Clubs .It is a difficult balance but action is required before Stephen will unfortunately have to report on a more serious incident.

Are we talking about the long list of anti-pembroke jargon that was being handed out at all times last year? The Rovers galacticos comments? The fingal pitch factor comments? YM - youth of the future diatribe? Or are we throwing toys out of the pram? 'Anonymous' above needs firstly to add his/her name to their comment, secondly grow a thicker skin, and thirdly realise that this site provides an amazing service, at entirely the bloggers expense, that is thoroughly appreciated by the majority of fans.

Long may this site continue.

I think that "The Hook" and "Southern Fried" are providing an excellent service for hockey people. Keep up the good work.

Yes this site really is excellent, and the match reports are a joy to read on a Monday in work. Check out the photo of Browner on this article-a hand is placed on his back, and he seems to be screaming to the umpire, classic!

I agree, This site is a top notch and fell that you may have to re-introduce the membership aspect again Stephen, it may reduce the number of comments but it will mean there is accountability for comments made.

i don't think the membership aspect should be re-introduced, there would still be no accountability as people can easily use a false name and/or set up as many accounts as they like...people should be able to take some criticism and just ignore the ridiculous comments that are obviously from kids or people who don't play high level hockey

Stephen your site is a great resource for those interested in keeping abreast of Leinster and Irish hockey. Keep up the good work!
