Weekend Preview: Loreto and UCD get postponements

A win for Railway Union this weekend over Bray will see them build up a seven-point advantage at the top of the women's division one after the controversial decision by the Leinster council to agree to postponements for Loreto and UCD.

Loreto's match with Hermes and UCD's game with Old Alexandra have both been postponed in the past two days. Loreto had appealed playing the game this weekend due to the involvement of five of their players in the international side's training camp.

Their appeal was rejected on Monday night but, following a review, was upheld on Wednesday. UCD, following suit, lodged an appeal to postpone their fixture with Old Alex which was granted on Thursday too.

It means a reduced schedule this week with Railway now in a decent position to extend their lead at the top of the table. Trinity face Corinthian as the bottom two lock horns while Pembroke take on Glenanne, looking to avenge their cup defeat.

On the men's side, Fingal host Three Rock in the battle for top spot with both sides nursing a number of injuries. YM will be hoping to convert decent performances into tangible points against Glenanne while Monkstown and Corinthian will renew their scrap to stay in the IHL places. Pembroke host Kilkenny.

The second round of the Irish Hockey Trophy takes place this weekend for the division two sides left in the competition.

Both teams are justified in getting the postponements but why did it take so long for the branch to confirm the decision?

Didn't the Branch make a ruling at the beginning of the season saying that though there would be clashes between Leinster league matches and Super camps, that no postponements would be made?

leinster have got to be realistic about the postponements that they give, whatever happened to the rule that if you have 3 or more players on representative duty then you get a postponement?? Are Loreto going to be looking for another postponement the following weekend due to ireland playing scotland and they are again down 5 players?? where will it end - well there is one good thing to come out of this - there are now 4 umpires free to cover the rest of senior 1 that did not have umpires

Ridiculous. No way to run a league.

How does something get rejected and then upheld? Why was it rejected in the first place?

This is a Joke.. its funny that Loreto only looked for a postponement when they come up again a top of the league clash.. Whats the point in having a leinster Branch when they cant enforce the rules they outline at the beginning of a season.
Hermes should be granted 3 points for a no show in my opinion -Its a disgrace..

Hey Stephen, I dont understand this???We have to play Loreto later in the season but we were told they wouldnt have their players(Ire wkend). Can they get a posponement now?We were told at start of season this wasn't the rule?????Can you change the rules of the competition during the season?

No consistency. No fairness. No rationality.
Reflex decision made without thinking about how it would affect the credibility of the league, the organisation of fixtures and the hockey of Loreto's opposition. Going into a IHL match without a competitive match for the previous 3 weeks is not top-level hockey match preparation.
Whatever the outcome of this league has already been undermined in my view.
