Women's Division One: UCD 0 Railway Union 1

UCD 0 Railway Union 1 (Jean McDonnell)

Railway extended their lead at the top of division one with a tight win over UCD at Belfield tonight. In a game of few chances, Jean McDonnell (pictured below) got the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the first half, coming from the only time Railway managed to get through the centre of the students defence.

The second half was an intriguing battle. McDonnell had a couple of half-sights on goal while Lisa Jacob won the only corner of the game with 12 minutes to go after a darting run down the right wing. The normally effective UCD corner machine, though, did not function, letting a precious chance slip.

Fiona Braddish almost got a spectacular equaliser, though, in the closing stages but her aerial deflection from Rachel Burke's cross flashed just over, meaning Mary Logue's emerging side experience their first league loss since her tenure began.

It sets up an interesting weekend as the top four all face each other. First plays second as Railway host Loreto while UCD welcome Hermes for a second time in quick succession.

The students played some impressive hockey against a somewhat tired looking Railway outfit, but the experience of the latter showed in the way they always looked likely to score. Jean MacDonnell was dangerous from beginning to end of the fixture so it was fitting that she was the one to convert the penalty. This weekend holds some very interesting clashes to look forward to. Hard to know whether Railway can maintain their momentum against a full strength Loreto side.

Not many, as with the Tuesday match, my camera and floodlights don't work too well together.

Here's a link to the others:
