Women's Division One: Week Six results

Railway Union 1 (Emer Dolan) Loreto 1 (Cathy McKean)

Railway Union conceded their first goal of the season on Saturday in their 1-1 draw with Loreto but will still come away the happiest as they came through a grueling schedule relatively unscathed.

Seven points from three games against the other title contenders has seen them create a four-point wedge between themselves and the chasing pack with their next three matches likely to yield three wins as they host the bottom three – Bray, Corinthian and Trinity – in their next outings. With either Hermes or Loreto losing points in next week’s highlight match, Railway’s titles chance could take another boost.

Emer Dolan opened the scoring two minutes into the second half but Cathy McKean leveled matters just six minutes later, the first time Helen Stevenson has had to pick the ball out of the net since joining the club at the start of the season.

Hermes 0 UCD 0
Neither Hermes nor UCD could close the gap on Railway at St Andrew’s. The pair played out a lively 0-0 draw but it was the hosts who were disappointed not to claim the result, failing to convert any of their eight penalty corners.

UCD’s progression under Mary Logue continues as they maintain their bid to crack Leinster’s top four and remain in a tie for third place with Hermes.

Old Alex 2 (Sylvia O'Mahony, Laura McCoy) Pembroke Wanderers 1 (Alice Ward)
Old Alex moved into contention for an Irish Hockey League place, moving into fifth place in a surprise result against Pembroke. Sylvia O’Mahony’s goal was cancelled out by Alice Ward’s strike but Laura McCoy struck the winner with 15 minutes to go.

Alex’s third win of the season has seen them up to ten points and right in the middle of a very congealed mid-table. Four points separate second from seventh. A win next week over UCD would see Alex breach the top three.

Pembroke, meanwhile, have stumbled on hard times of late after an encouraging start to the season with a revamped squad, losing for the second week running, though teenager Alice Ward got her first senior league goal.

Glenanne 3 (K O'Connor 2, D Tiernan) Trinity 1 (Danielle Costigan)
Trinity are now firmly rooted to the bottom of the division one table with their sixth loss on the spin and Corinthian's draw, adding to their woes with a 3-1 loss to Glenanne. The newly-promoted side, meanwhile, are now well clear of the relegation zone and are in touching distance of the IHL qualifying spots.

Bray 2 (Linda O'Neill, Claire Brock) Corinthian 2 (Lyndsey Watson, E Caulwell)
Corinthian picked up their first point of the season with a spirited 2-2 draw against Bray and coach Scott Crombie felt afterwards that if his side can reproduce that level of performance, combined with a bit of luck, they could pick up a first win when they face Trinity next week.

Former Irish international Linda O’Neill and Claire Brock got the goals for the Wicklow side, but ex-Trinity player Lyndsey Watson got the crucial goal for Corinthian to tie the game up.

Railway are having a fantastic start to the season - its great to see a different team at the top of the division 1 instead of the usual suspects - it can only be good for leinster hockey

can anyone tell me where have all the umpires gone? is there any sign of new umpires coming into leinster hockey especially into the ladies panel

Anonymous said...

wasn't there once a rule that said that if you had a team in senior 1 you had to nonimate a senior umpire - how come this does not happen anymore - is the branch running leinster ladies hockey or the clubs that do not provide umpires to senior hockey, some of us that provide umpires to the umpires association are getting fed up with the clubs that keep taking from the clubs that do provide. Isn't it about time that someone asked the question of the branch - what are you going to do about it???

Dead right each Div 1 club should have a least 1 umpire. There are too many clubs in Div 1 who have no umpires. It looks like we're a crises point with the number of Senior umpires. It may be a case the teams who don't supply umpires get docked points I am sure that would make clubs take notice of the problem.

there are 10 teams in senior 1 - can anyone tell me what are the clubs that provide the umpires?

I know that Loreto, Railway and Corithians do and I am nearly sure Three Rock do too even though they are Div 2 now.

Should those clubs get the branch umpires and those that dont find their own?

Railway v Loreto was one of the best games of hockey I have ever seen. Really really exciting stuff from both teams.

I can't believe you forgot Alex - Carol Metchette is their umpire - as for clubs that supply umpires to the branch and those that don't - if you get a club that provides an umpire playing against a club that does not provide an umpire - you cannot penalise the club that does - catch 22

Anonymous said...

yes you can penalise the clubs that don't have an umpire ( dock them 3 points for each month they don't have an umpire) All clubs have club umpires that umpire on a saturday. So get them trained ....this will help the situation. The branch have done nothing about this situation and they have known about this problem for years......

what about a differnt game been cancelled each week. this will ease the pressure on a saturday and the cancelled game can be played on a sunday or midweek.

Come on RAILERS

Of course Railway are doing well, they've brought in a load of new players! Trophy hunting big time!!!

Anonymous said...

Erm....1 new player....Helen Stevenson - Goal Keeper.

Anonymous said...

A load of new players? Really? Name them. Besides Helen Stevenson the rest of the team are from last years' squad or are returning former players such as Emma Smyth. Their current squad comes from building over the last few years.
Also, trophy hunting. Is that meant to be an insult? Aren't all competitive teams looking to win trophies? Go Railers! P

TROPHY HUNTING!! - Wow, theres someone with a chip on their shoulder! Are all clubs not Trophy Hunting as you put it?? Remind me the last time Railway won a Trophy?? They have a very good coach as well as very good players who play as a TEAM!!

Anonymous said...

1 player or not. Helen has kept a clean sheet in every league game bar one!! That one player has been fantastic since the word go.

Railway have only bought in one player this year, the rest is down to hard work by the squad(during last season and this year so far) and a fantastic coach who has installed a winning mentality into the team..

Railway are a top class side improving each year under both Mick and Una. They play as a team and don't rely on 3 or 4 people to carry them through games like some of the other clubs in the ladies first division. Their new goaly was a great addition to an already talented squad.

To Trophy hunting big time, wow you are really suffering a bad case of sour grapes, did Railway beat you this year?? Railway have worked really hard to get to where they are - some of the girls have come up through the colts section, so get your facts right!!

Anonymous said...

yeah seriously cop onto your self....nothin but hard work and determination has got railway where they are at the mooment.Der

Trophy Hunting...stupid comment, get a grip whoever you are.

Railway are doing v well this year fair play to them

Is there a reason why there are no Railway Players involved with the International Setup?

Anonymous said...

probably because none of them are even close to international standard i would think

Anonymous said...

glad there is not a railway player in the international setup at the moment - your club is penalised because of it - take loreto, they have 5 international players and they are due to play hermes on sat, the top match of the weekend, but the leinster branch in suppporting its clubs have declined to give loreto a postponment and in reality could have caused loreto a place in the IHL next year - great support leinster!! if you are a coach or assistant coach of a interpro side. then you get a postponment - strange or what!!

The Railway Loreto game was class given that the conditions were as bad as I have ever ever witnessed for a match , either playing or watching. The skill level shown by both teams was amazing . To be fair a draw was the fairest result and only a mistake would have won the game for either team . Thank god that didnt happen and that is to the credit of the players . There is nothing between the two teams . Both have a great blend of youth and experience with quality in all the important areas . Loreto started the season slowly under a new coach but are really beginning to find some form. Railway are the best example of 'Team' around but that does little credit to the quality of some of their players . I've seen them in training a lot this year and they train the way they play (at a high pace) so its no surprise to me that they are playing so well . It should be an exciting season ...

mostly, the Railway players are seen as too old to break on at this stage.

Just heard the Hermes v Loreto match has been postponed??

Anonymous said...

Yes, quite controversial some might say

UCD v Alex is also off - some might say that the branch have found a way of dealing with the fact that there was not enough umpires for the weekend.
