Leinster men's junior round-up

Division Three:

Monkstown II need a point from their final match of the season against reigning champions Pembroke Wanderers II to take the title after they beat Glenanne II on Tuesday night in a roller-coaster game 4-3. Ian Horsfield scored the winner from a corner after earlier leads created by Eoin O'Connor, Simon Allen and Sam Prentice.

Long-time leaders Corinthian lie three points back and will need to beat UCD II to have any hope of taking the title. Should they pull level, a playoff will be required to decide the title.

Barring league restructuring, it looks as if relegation will not be an issue this year with sixth third elevens leading the way in division four.

YMCA II and Three Rock Rovers II will face off for the Railway Cup later this month, though the date is still to be confirmed. The final was initially down for April 19 but was moved forward due to the delayed interpros. This apparently did not suit so the fixture will be re-arranged once more.

Division Four:
Corinthian III look home and hosed in this one with a three point lead and a game in hand though they have wobbled a little in recent weeks with a loss to Glenanne III and a draw with Clontarf II. Should the reds hold on, though, it would mean Keith Fishburne retains the title having won division four with the Glens last year.

A tricky run-in with trips to Three Rock Rovers III, Weston II and Mullingar need to garner four points to hold off the intentions of Pembroke III.

Weston II and Kilkenny II are cut adrift at the bottom of a 13 team division.

Division Five:
St Brendan's Phoenix Park - led by All-Ireland football winner Dessie Farrell - are in the box seat. They are currently tied on 44 points with holders Three Rock Rovers IV but have a game in hand and home advantage on grass against their nearest rivals. Thus far, Brendan's have been near impregnable on home turf with just three goals conceded.

Pembroke IV are three points back but have just one game left to play. Railway Union IV and Bray II occupy the bottom placings.

St Brendan's already have silverware in the bank, after they serenely rode through the Intermediate Cup, beating Fingal III last weekend 3-1.

Division Six:
Dublin University III continued their remarkable rise through the divisions having resided in the old division ten less than a decade ago. They won division six with a 5-0 win over Glenanne IV last Saturday with old heads like Alan Bell, Cian Denham and former Villiers' man David Adley still forging a career with the students.

Fingal III will finish second while Three Rock Rovers V and Weston III look set for the drop.

Division Seven:
John Lynskey's Navan II are another side on the rise as they claimed division seven thanks to their 4-3 win over second placed Corinthian V at Whitechurch Park on Saturday. At the bottom, Bray III look set to finish last while Smithfield will need at least a point from their last game to escape ninth.

Division Eight:
An incredibly tight division sees Kilkenny III and UCD III go toe-to-toe for the divisional title as well as contesting the Junior cup final on April 19. Both have tricky away days to come in their closing fixtures with the students attempting to breach St Brendan's Grangegorman fortress while the Cats must travel to Wicklow on April 25. Wicklow prop up the table but have a decent home record to date.

Division Nine:
Glenanne V became the first league winners when they took the title in March thanks to their 3-0 win over Navan III. The Minor Cup final sees South East Wanderers II play RCSI - both non-league sides - on April 19.

In the Walters Cup, Glenanne await the winner of UCD and YMCA while the Galtrim Cup is at the semi-final stage with Naas to play St James's Gate and Glenanne playing Monkstown.

I think its a sad state of affairs when two teams not registered in the leagues contest any cup final. The minor cup this season appears to be a farce. I feel sorry for division 9 teams competing in a cup which season on season is usually won by a team not competing in the league.
Kilkenny springs to mind!

kk used that minor cup platform to enter a league team who are now steadily going up the leagues. how about looking at things in a positive light

Town made the best of their chances last night, lucky to come away with a win and not a draw or worse though. ;)

Best of luck to them in their Div3 decider match against Pembroke. I think Pembroke have lost their golden touch this year, still a good side, but they are not as dangerous as previous years.

I think if the Town toughen up a bit and stop getting side tracked with appealing (including their sideline) they can get the result they need.

I think Railway Cup final has been refixed to Saturday 25th April

Pembroke 4s beat St. Brendans on the grass!!!!

kilkenny are registered in a league.

I think the point about kilkenny is they started off without a 3rds but entered the minor cup, did quite well then entered the league.

as for RCSI, with most of their players schedules requiring a lot of weekend work, they would seem much more suited to cup competitions and intervarsities rather than a full league system

I wouldn't go assuming anything about Div 3 yet. Pembroke are a vastly improved team in comparison to their 1st half of the season and they'll still be in the IJC and will probably use the Monkstown league game as a good practice match for the IJC final.

kilkenny needs hockey and hockey with respect needs kilkenny and kilkenny used that platform initiated with the minor cup to create a thirds team. to pathetically slag kilkenny is small minded and indicative of petty snobbery . blogger april 8th 8.44am should be ashamed of their stance. i find it galling that people continuously put themselves ahead of others. that kilkenny thirds team is super and fair dues to them.

emmet,
you miss the point entirely.
This is not an attack on Kilkenny, far from it. They had an excellent thirds but at times I and others felt that their thirds should have entered a higher level cup competition that the minor cup.

The point I am making is that cups should reflect ability. I notice that the division 9 winners Glenanne were given a 10-1 hammering by south east wanders on their way to the final. Maybe Glenanne are poor but they seem to have won division 9 so to be beaten by a non league team 10-1 suggests that the team is in the wrong level cup!!!

My point is that when two teams not registered in a league reach the cup final for that league, perhaps they are in the incorrect cup competition!

Ps: Good luck to the town!

Kilkenny have produced some good players over the years - won cups, all irelands and leagues at school level and 4 have competed at Provincial and Irish levels (O Gorman, Lee, Gray, Hughes).

Over the years most playing every week, for the last couple of years in Dublin in Division 1 - Derek O gorman, Fran Lee, Mark Magner, Brian Gray, Nigel Grothier, Lloyd Pearson, Emmett Hughes and Eddie O'Malley (gone but not forgotten)...

Not forgetting the KK team who have competed in the last 2 years in Div one - this year not so successful granted, but still fair play to them...

It would make for exciting stuff if Chc and Monkstown had a play off!

Was at the Monkstown v Glenanne game last night. Was a great second team game with both teams as strong as they could be.

Glens were marginally the better side but let in two very sloppy goals when they lost the ball in midfield over-committed straight after half-time. Still they did well to get back into the game although it was a great strike from Horse to win the game

Not quite sure that hockey needs Kilkenny though I think it is great that Kilkenny remains involved and competitive at many levels. It is hard to play competitive hockey outside of the major centres Dublin and Cork (down south at least) and it is testament to the desire of those playing in Kilkenny that they are firstly even competing (taking travelling into account), and secondly that they are competitive. To play and know that at least half of your matches are a 2 hour drive away is fantastic, and fair play. For all those who travel 10 minutes to get to their games on a Saturday, I think you should take this into account before complaining. Also, it seems clear that the upset at them not playing in the league and playing only in the cup (Kilkenny 3rds) can only really be for one reason-they are very good and you dont like that. For a team of lads who cant afford to take a full day away from home every week for the duration of the hockey season, it is a great way to stay in touch with the game and enjoy it. Enjoyment...its not all about leagues, fixtures, winning, losing. Have fun and respect those who have the same philosophy.

monkstown have a lot to do against pembroke who appear to be a rejuvanated side. definitely a much better side than that of pre christmas.

interesting that no one team in leinster is dominating this season but 5 teams are still in with a shout of silverware. it shows the strength of the teams in my opinion. monkstown or corinthians can win the league. ym and trr are duking it out for the railway cup and pembroke are in the final of the IJC against my pre tournament favourites of c of I.

thanks for the update steve.

Anyone know what the craic is with the Euro Trophy this weekend in Pembroke?

Anonymous said...

since when were the ihl rules introduced into div 3?

Anonymous said...

Glenanne beat Pembroke 3-1 in the other Galtrim Cup Semi tonight.

So a Gate vs. Glens final on the 26th

Anonymous said...

Sorry I meant to say Glenanne beat Monkstown, not Pembroke

does any one know where the finals for the walters nd galtrim are bein held????

Anonymous said...

Both the Walters and Galtrim Cups are being played, along with the Neville Davin, are being played on the 2nd of May in Serpentine Ave.

Anonymous said...

why was it changed from the 26th of april to the 2nd of may??

Anonymous said...

I seriously doubt it is being played on the 2nd of May. Thats a Bank holiday weekend with the IHL finals being played and anyway the Leinster Branch site and Book say the 26th.

As regards to the Non League teams entering the Minor Cup. This years Minor Cup only had 7 teams in it. A few years ago it had 20 teams in it because of Division 10. I think clubs should enter a team into the cup to bring on youth and also let the old experienced boys put their bit in. What definitely shouldn't happen is where a club loads their team with big skillful first players which would hammer the younger and weaker sides.

Anonymous said...

I heard that rumour too that those cup finals are being moved to the 2nd May!!!!

The Neville Davin is down for the 19th April!!!!

Is it just me or is this total MADNESS????

May Bank Holiday is a terrible weekend... Most leagues are finished at that stage by a few weeks, and the IHL finals are on!!!

Branch have made some weird calls this season.....

Anyone know the reason behind it!!!!??????

Ian Horsfield playing seconds????

He is the firsts best player???

Anonymous said...

that must be horse that left that comment. he's been playing 2s since january to make up for not getting on the pitch for the 1s ever. he's been overtaken by a number of younger, more handsome players.

does anyone know, if the neville davin cup final is moved to May, does that mean that the auto pass and the other new rules will be in affect, my understanding is that they are to be introduced from may 1st?

Anonymous said...

According to the Leinster Branch book the Walters and Galtrim Cup Final are on the 19th.
The website also.
Has there been any official statement that it's been moved?
Can whoever posted that it's been moved please link to a source?

It is true that the neville davin cup final has been moved until may 2nd - 4pm start..God knows why!?? Strange call for the branch.. we're are now wondering if we are gonna play the new rules?? and also thanks to the branch we will now longer not be able to watch/support the IHL semi finals.

I can't link an offical source, because I can't find one. But I'm sure if you ask your Match Sec they'll confirm it, if it means that much to you. They all got emails on Wednesday.

As for the Neville Davin my understanding is that it was moved because of Junior Interpro. Which would make sense except neither TCD or Clontarf have put anyone forward for it, as far as I know.

Look at navan 2nds winnin the league, wehey! We won something!!

Such a contrast between playin 1sts and 2nds at Navan.
