Pembroke off to perfect start

Pembroke got their EuroHockey Club Trophy off to a great start in front of a sizable home crowd at Serpentine Avenue this evening, beating Belarussian side SC Stroitel Brest 4-2 to hold sway over the group on goal difference after one round of matches.

Alan Sothern hit his second hat-trick in a week as he dovetailed brilliantly with Gordon Elliott and Justin Sherriff, especially in the opening stages, as Brest chose to defend deep and play on the counter-attack.
His first pair came from drag-flicks inside 15 minutes to make it 2-1 with Avaksander Biarynchuk on target for the visitors.

Elliott got Pembroke's third before Sothern applied the most delightful touch over the goalkeeper after a superb pivot in the circle for 4-1. Avaksandr Radzivinovich pulled one back from a late corner but the Irish side can be pleased with their efforts on day one.

Earlier on, Russian side Elektrostal showed good form in their 4-3 victory over Croatia's HAHK Mladost while Pembroke's opponents Akademischer HTC Wien were another to impress.

They beat Ukraine's Dinamo Olimpik 3-2, making tomorrow's game at 4pm a key fixture in the running for first place in the group.

Meanwhile, in Lille in the women's EuroHockey Cup Winners Trophy, it became clear Pegasus main group rivals will be Victorya Smolevichi after they tanked Penarth 12-0. Pegs play the Welsh side tomorrow.

Results:
Group A: Dinamo Elektrostal 4 HAHK Mladost 3; AHC Suelli 2 HC Rotweiss Wettingen 4
Group B: Dinamo Olimpik VSM 2 Akademischer HTC Wien 3; Pembroke Wanderers 4 (Alan Sothern 3, Gordon Elliott) SC Stroitel Brest 2 (Radzivinovich Auaksandr)

Pembroke never looked troubled against Stroitel Brest. Apart from a few dragged corners, and a some ridiculous 70 yard overheads as attacking options (which were over used) Brest were pretty weak going fwd...

Best of luck to Pembroke for the rest of the weekend.

that dude at the back for Brest had the most rediclous flick ever! huge! an his drags were leathel aswell.

Would be very intersting to see how they`d do without him given all they do is aerial it and try to win shorts for him to drag.
