John Waring All Ireland Schoolboys Cup announced

The new John Waring All-Ireland schoolboy's cup has been added to the school's calendar for the season, in addition to next week's regular competition.

The tournament will mirror the same format as the ESB Kate Russell and will take place for the first time this year on the March 19 and 20, 2009 in Grange Road.

Schools will qualify through their Branch Senior Cup Competition with both the winners and runners up qualifying for the John Waring Schoolboys Cup. The six schools will compete in two pools of three on day one with the classification and final being played on day two.

This cup has been named after the late John Waring who contributed hugely to Ulster and Irish Schoolboys Hockey throughout his life.

what is the point of this competition because there is already an all ireland competition?

I think its a great idea - qualification and seeding for the existing All Irelands is based on the previous years results. We all know that school teams can change drastically year on year. This competition is based on the current years results therefore ensuring the best teams are participating.

I think this is a brilliant idea. However this means the seeding for the leinster cup must be done right this year i.e that andrews and wesley are in separate sides of the draw...And same for the top 2 seeds in the other provinces!..It will probably be on setanta, as the girls one is!

fitting tribute to a great man who is very much missed

why should andrews and wesley b split up? last years senior cup was the best in years. all the best cup comps aren't seeded. what happens if andrews and wesley aren't the 2 best 1 year? there are pleny of schools who are very close 2 wesleys lever this year eg sutton, kilkenny and high school.

last years draw was a joke, wesley played sutton andrews and kh then went to play high school a second division schools team last season, while andrews are on the other side of the group and they had kilkenny or someone, i think it was crazy, well done to wesley for coming through it to win again, something needs to be done about it, you cant put a handicap on a team just because they have won 3 r 4 in a row.
and i think the all irealand school boy cup is a great idea, anything to promote our sport.
